Ubuntu :: How To Delete Saved Files On Log Out

Apr 11, 2010

I'm setting up a single stand-alone computer in my classroom to be used by my students at the school where I teach. I've installed Ubuntu, as it smashes Windoze out of the court every time.

I want the students to be able to log on to the computer using just one account: 'Student'. This computer will be attached to a printer so they can type up and print oOfice documents, web pages, etc. However, once they log out, I want any files they might have saved (such as a word processed document) to be removed/deleted from the account so that when another pupil logs on to the 'Student' account they start with a clean slate. I suppose you could call it a sort-of Kiosk account.

How can I get Ubuntu to clear any saved documents on log-out?

General :: Unable To Own Previously Saved /home Files On New External USB Drive

Nov 2, 2010

I have just had to reinstall my OS (Sabayon) onto a new and larger hard drive (dying old disk). I quickly saved all my old docs in /home on an external USB drive (formatted and then created an ext4 file system) before the swap and installation.

After getting the new disk running I connected the USB external disk. First I could not access the drive at all, but that seems to be fixed. Now I want to bring all my files back to my new /home folder but apparently they (especially the former MS Office .doc, .xls, etc files, not so much the OpenOffice files) are read only and I don't have permissions anymore. I am able to create directories on the external, and can move files back and forth, but don't seem to own many of them.Sabayon automatically mounted my external disk in /media/disk, rather than /mnt, so I've left that alone for now. After searching here and elsewhere for info, I tried a few things (below): For access I added a line to /etc/fstab:

Code:

/dev/sdb1 /media/disk ext4 noauto,rw 0 0

Here's what I've done to try and fix ownership already:

in /media I:

Code:

# chmod 775 disk

which gives output of:

Code:

media # ls -l
total 4
drwxrwxr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 21:30 disk

[code]....

I'm not sure what the total 4 refers to since there is only the one directory disk inside /media but I assume that's not part of this issue... Does adding umask=0 have anything to do with this, and if so where does that go?

Ubuntu :: User (vs. Root) Cannot Move To Trash, Only Delete, On Ext3 Partition?

Jan 9, 2010

I just wanted to post this in case it helps anyone else. I have all my personal files (photos, documents, etc.) saved on a separate ext3 partition (so I don't have to worry about them on new installs, etc.). When I tried to delete files, however, I always received the message: "Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately?".

After much searching and failed fix attempts (mostly unnecessary messing with fstab), I found this post, which is now archived (or I would have replied there):ttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=759544. And frediE's solution, with a couple tiny modifications, finally solved the problem! (So huge thanks to frediE! ). irst, I found my user id, which is 1000, by going to the System > Administration > Users and Groups menu, selecting my user name (e.g. jnewm), clicking "Properties", andselecting "Advanced".

Second, I created a folder on the root of my partition called ".Trash-1000". (I may have needed to use "gksu nautilus" from a terminal to create the folder, I don't recall.)Third and last, I navigated to the root of the partition in my terminal and ran: sudo chown -R jnewm:jnewm .Trash-1000. Followed by: sudo chmod -R jnewm .Trash-1000 (I doubt this second step was necessary, but I'm listing it just in case). (confirmed unnecessary)

Server :: Move To Maildir, Users Mail Owned By Root Now?

Jun 4, 2010

I recently made the migration from mbox to maildir.I use postfix, spamassassin, dovecot for imap and procmail for delivery.I made the changes for Maildir to postfix main.cf, dovecot's dovecot.conf and procmail's procmailrc. All good, working well.Just noticed though, that mail marked as spam and filtered by procmail to be put in the users ~/Maildir/.spam/new folder are owned by root. Not allowing the users to even see it (600 perms)

So postfix sends all mail to Procmail:
mailbox_command = procmail -a "$EXTENSION"

CentOS 5 :: Need To Move Space From Root File System To Swap

I currently have a server with the default VolGroup00 that contains logical volumes for the root file system and swap using logical volumes LogVol00 (root) and LogVol01 (swap.) I need to take space from LogVol00 and move it to LogVol01. I have found documentation for increasing the swap, and the resizing the logical volumes. However in the documentation and the man pages it says that I have to reduce the size of teh file system on the logical volume I am going to shrink. I have found documentation resizing the logical volumes but not the file systems.

General :: Move And Utilize Root /boot And Swap Dir To Temporary Location?

Oct 16, 2009

I'll start by explaining what my system layout currently is. I have Fedora 11 X64 installed on my system, it is an HP Dv9380ca laptop. My system has 2 hdd /dev/sda /dev/sdb. During the setup i set my home directory to reside on /dev/sdb. After booting i realized that my root and swap partition are part of a volume group name vg_sharpfed and are set in fstab as:

/dev/mapper/vg_sharpyfed-lv_root / ext4 defaults 1 1
/dev/mapper/vg_sharpyfed-lv_swap swap swap defaults 0 0

Output of Fdisk -l /dev/sda

Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x1aecda8d

[code]....

My /dev/sda2 partitions is 100gigs and set as an LVM. Essentially what i am getting at is, if it's possible to temporarily copy / /boot and swap to my second partition, edit grub if needed and fstab to mount to the temp locations, format sda to ext4 create partitions for / /boot and swap partitions, then copy back the original directories edit required fstab to mount the original locations and no longer have them contained in a Logical volume.

Apple :: How Best To Move Files From An Old Mac To A New Ubuntu Box

Jun 10, 2010

Last fall I got a new Linux desktop computer from System76. Before that, I had a 1997-era beige G3 Mac. (This Mac is pre-USB plugs.)

I still have files on that old Mac that I need to move to the new machine. Some are text files and various other kinds of files, but mostly, they're image files, and there's a lot of them.

The Mac has a SCSI port and an Ethernet port. No Firewire, no USB.

My question: What's the best way to move the files from the old to the new machine?

(I think it would be a hassle to try to e-mail them, as I have quite a lot of image files on the Mac.)

Also, if some of the files (like text-files?) that are in Mac format can't be read once on a Linux OS, how would I make the necessary conversions?
