I have installed ubuntu 9.10 on my Laptop and i want to copy my important data from my Desktop PC to my Laptop.My Desktop PC have windows 7.some days back, I am accessing all the files from windows PC but now this problem is very hectic for me.i have attached a snapshot of an error.this error popped when i try to access my windows PC through smb.

When i first installed ubuntu on my laptop i could access the shared folders i had put on the network with windows through ubuntu, read and write files, copy and paste them etc. I tried recently going to Places>Network and i get this error: failed to retrieve share list from server
It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues
1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before
So, I'm trying to set up a network with my windows netbook so the Ubuntu comp can access the internet through the netbook's wireless. Finally got the network set up, but can't access the internet on the Ubuntu comp. Also, the Ubuntu machine can recognize and access the files on the netbook, but the netbook only sees a computer named Owner-a6012abd6 which asks for a password.
The netbook is running Windows XP SP3, with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter(internet) and an Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. The Ubuntu comp is running Ubuntu 9.04.
I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.
whenever I try and acces my windows network it just says "Failed To Receive Share List From Server"It has previously worked fine in ubuntu and suse. Anyway I can get this to work?

On my Windows XP machine, I can see the Ubuntu directory and can access files on it. I just can't access the Windows workgroup from Ubuntu.
I marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.
Filesharing
On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)
Printing
On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.
I wish to write a python code so that I can access a file on a windows computer on the network. I know the IP, Computer Name, Workgroup, username,password and any other neccesary detail of the computer. I also have the access to the computer to intall any software I may need to install on the said windows computer.
Kindly guide me so that I may access the files. The files are in a folder shared over the network but not on the windows drive of the computer.
I am able to access the files using gui (ubuntu 11.04).
i work in an office with individual p/c's (all with windows xp) connected to a windows server. i have installed opensuse 11.2 on my work's p/c (as a dual boot) but have no idea what to do so that i can access files on the windows server. can some kind person point me in the right direction.

I have both computers connected through the same internet router, and i am succesfully accessing windows share files and remote control. The problem is, i dont want to move the files i want from their current location, to a share folder, and then onto my laptop. The main problem is that my whole family uses the pc, and while they are logged on i cannot remote control.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.
What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".
I have installed Fedora 8 on an old PC to use as a home network and I am having trouble getting a Windows PC running XP to get through to the internet, but I am able to access the internet from the Linux box with no issues. I can ping the gateway on eth0 from the Linux box, but I can't ping it from the windows PC. I am able to ping the IP address for eth0 from the Windows PC. My internet gateway is a modem/router from Hughes net. I also have a Netgear router between the Linux box and the Windows PC, but there doesn't appear to be any issues because I can ping both NICs from the Windows PC. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have set up RHEL 5 file server with Winbind and samba services running.I am able to assign and authenticate windows XP users against my RHEL 5 server.No issues.But one or two of my users are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition and they are not able to access my network samba shares.I can view the shares in windows 7 box but trying to access gives me "network access denied error".But i can access the same share in Windows xp machine for the above tested users.Working great but not in windows 7 box.I haven't tested with Vista OS yet.

Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.

I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.
Now the questions:
1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".
2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
I connected my laptop running with Ubuntu 11 in the LAN but I couldn't access internet.But I could ping to the other computers connected in the LAN. I tried the same thing with windows 7 in the same laptop and I could access internet.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 11.3amd64 as a VM under Vista/VMWare Player - all worked fine. I have now installed it as a physical system. It nstalled cleanly BUT during first boot it could not access the repos. With each repo it gave the message
- download (curl) error for (repo)
- error code connection failed
- error message could not resolve host (repo)
This was followed by a message box containing
- UI syntax error
- no widget with ID 'contents
Firefox could not access the internet (cannot find server) until I disabled IPV6 (I used about:config), now it works fine. I think the repos problem is because of IPV6 - I usually have trouble with IPV6. I tried disabling IPV6 with the following (How To Disable ipv6 on SuSE Linux | Linux Poison)

I have a linux domain (FEDORA CORE 1) and two laptop's which are part of my domain with windows xp pro service pack 2.I have given two ip's to both the laptop's being primary as global and secondary as local.I have configured printer in one laptop and shared.Till last week i was accessing that shared printer from my other laptop and every thing was working fine.Last week i formatted one laptop,(which dose not have shared printer) from then onwards i am not able to access my other laptop. I get the following message when i try to accessmy other Laptop,"you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission there are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request"P.S : If i have only local IP i am able to see both the systems and i am able to access my printer, this problem comes only when i add global IP to both the machines.And also i have stopped the firewall and other things.

I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.

With these settings i can't reach the internal network from inside.If i disable the gateway on eth1 and enable the gateway on eth0, it works.
Last week I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system in dual booting. I had installed succesfully both but unable to see data files from windows OS. Though I have excercised the options in various resources available on internet/blogs. System takes about 03 hrs during installation process. I am also unable to configure Thunderbird.

I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?
