When i first installed ubuntu on my laptop i could access the shared folders i had put on the network with windows through ubuntu, read and write files, copy and paste them etc. I tried recently going to Places>Network and i get this error: failed to retrieve share list from server
It never used to do this, in fact when i went to places the network was not called "network", it was my own title. i can connect to the server with the ip address, but that only lets me take files from the windows network, and not the other way around. I really have two issues
1. cannot place files on the network from my ubuntu laptop
2. cannot connect to shared folder network from places like i could before
I have a hardisk shared on my windows machine. And I would like to be able to access this on my opensuse notebook. Just cant figure it out. Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.
So, it took me a few years to come back to Linux. Had used it MANY years ago, and have been meaning to revisit it for some time now and finally have. Tried a couple other OSs that were just, frankly, garbage. But, not Ubuntu! So far, I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted here. I decided to use my worst system as a test environment - an old Jetta Jetbook 9450. Loaded up with no problems, most noted none of the "searching for drivers" issue that I ran into with other OSs! All that being said, I do have one question - how do I get the laptop to join my network so that I can view my shared drives? In Windows, it's simply change WORKGROUP to my network name. Been flipping through the options, and I'm sure I may have overlooked it.
I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5. I am trying to browse to the Windows machines on my network (Places > Network Servers > Windows Network), but I get a blank window. I am able to ping the Windows machines using their IP address, but not by their name. What do I need to do to be able to see the Windows machines and also to connect to shared folders on these machines? So far I have tried starting SMB (via System > Administration > Server Settings > Services). I have also tried changing my smb workgroup to "WORKGROUP" (the default was mygroup which did not match my Windows machines.
When I first start up my 2 computers once the network is established if I try to acces the Ubuntu shared folders from the Win XP machine I get this error:"\localhost not accessible. You might not have permission to usethis network resource.t the administrator of this server to findout if you have access permissions.You were not connected because aduplicate name exits on the network. Go to System in Control Panel tochange the computer name and try again."If I first access the Windows shared files and then go back to the Win machine I get the password prompt and all is well
I am using RHEL5 in that i have installed samba rpm as well as created samba users while access the shared folders in WINDOWS i got "access dined" error.
I have a desktop pc running Windows 7 and a netbook running xubuntu 9.10. What I am trying to do is to access the shared folders on my windows 7 pc on my xubuntu netbook.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to figure out yet how to share specific directories only, so I set up my Samba server to share users' home directories (which is not a security issue here since the only possible client is my other machine). My user's home directory contains a symlinked directory on another hard drive partition, which I had to explicitly share to be able to access it from the other machine. This setup has been working for months now, but for a reason that escapes me at the moment it stopped working today, presumably after samba got updated from 3.4.2-1.1.3.1 to 3.4.3-3.2.1.
The error message on the client (Windows XP/SP3) for this one above mentioned directory, and for this directory alone, is "Access denied"; I can access all other directories fine.

I'm a Windows person and will soon be tasked with UNIX/LINUX projects. I'm trying to learn as much as possible in a very short period of time. I'm very familiar with VMPlayer and VirtualBox. Recently I installed OpenSUSE 11.3 as a guest OS on VMPlayer (bridged network). The host is WinXP. I have also enabled shared folder to the host @ CRepositoryInstalls. Question - How do I access the shared folder from OpenSUSE (the guest OS) and vice-versa?
I have a OpenSUSE 11 machine set up as a domain controller. I have set my printer up to be shared to Windows machines logging into the domain. I was able to install the printer to my Windows machines. When you go to the printers folder in Windows, it shows the printer but says "access denied" instead of the usual "ready". If I print to the shared printer the job will go through. I am thinking it is an authentication issue because if I log into Windows machine as "root" and let it build a profile, the printer doesn't show the "access denied" message. How do I allow other users to have access to the printer?
I have in fact set the folder to shared.I can see my computer or "server" on the windows network.My router is all that ties my network together.And I have a criminal history...okay that last one was a lie.But really I'm stuck here I can't figure out how to let the windows network see my shared folder.
I want to print from my linux box to my win7 pc that has a shared printer. I have cups installed and tried to add pritner using samba, but was unsuccesful, gave me an error when trying to add. The guide i followed is: Yet another Linux to Windows printing tip -- Debian Admin The printer model is a dell 2330d laser printer, it is not in cups, so i added the ppd file i got off the dell support site. I am aware that there is a native suse driver, but i want to print to the windows printer.If possible I would like to know how to do this via command line instead of the GUI.
My USB printer is connected to an OpenSUSE 11.2 desktop on a home network. I shared the printer with samba and can print from a Windows XP notebook connected to the network, but whenever I try to connect a Windows 7 machine, I always get the message that Windows cannot connect to the printer.
I mount the shared drives (on a Windows Server 2003) and I can access them from my home directory. Everything is mostly fine. But I also get desktop icons for the shared drives, which I don't like since I prefer a bare desktop. Sometimes I have deleted desktop icons from /usr/share/dist/... but these are not there.

So, I'm trying to set up a network with my windows netbook so the Ubuntu comp can access the internet through the netbook's wireless. Finally got the network set up, but can't access the internet on the Ubuntu comp. Also, the Ubuntu machine can recognize and access the files on the netbook, but the netbook only sees a computer named Owner-a6012abd6 which asks for a password.
The netbook is running Windows XP SP3, with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter(internet) and an Atheros AR8132 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. The Ubuntu comp is running Ubuntu 9.04.
I have two machines running ubuntu connected through a BiPAC 7401VGPR3 (Billion modem/router). One is a new notebook running Ubuntu 11.04 and the other desktop computer is running 10.04 connected to the printer and external hdd.
I can't find the right documentation to network them so that I can share HDD, printers, devices, etc. I can't get either computer to see each other via network searches.
Also may need to boot into Windows from time to time and access the network from there.

On my Windows XP machine, I can see the Ubuntu directory and can access files on it. I just can't access the Windows workgroup from Ubuntu.
I marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.
Filesharing On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)
Printing On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.
