Ubuntu :: Brothers HL2170W Printer - Send A Page To Print It Takes 5 Minutes Before It Prints
May 15, 2010
I just installed a Brothers HL2170W printer on my desktop which is running Ubuntu 1004 I had no problem with the install and it is working. The problem is when I send a page to print it takes 5 minutes before it prints. Does anyone know if this is normal or if there is a fix. I have the printer connected with a USB cable.

I'm struggling on installing a KONICA-MINOLTA printer magicolor 4695MF printing properly with Linux Mint Debian Edition (up to date). The test page works fine...
KONICA-MINOLTA delivers 2 PPDs: one for standard printing and one for OpenOffice printing (available on the KONICA-MINOLTA support site).
Leaving a side the one for OpenOffice which is poor in using the capabilities of the printer, I concentrate only on the global one (M4695PX.ppd).
It's much more difficult for other applications, starting with EVINCE: some PDF files are printed properly (i.e. those generated in OpenOffice by the CUPS PDF printer), others come out as one only blank page, regardless to the original length of the document.
So documents received from 3rd party may be "printable" or not. And trust Murphy, the most critical aren't printed...

I have a couple of large-format printers (Epson R2400, HP 9650) which I only use infrequently. If they are not used very often, they dry out, the print heads get packed up, it's an expensive mess to deal with when times comes to run off some prints. The printers are physically connected to a Windows machine to which my Ubuntu computer is networked. It would be helpful if there was a utility that could initiate a test page print job on the machines, which could be scheduled to run once a week or so. I've had no luck finding such a thing for Windows

I've recently installed F15 LXDE RC from the livecd and connected my USB Brother All-In-One MFC-5440cn printer. After following the Brother installation page, the Cups & LPR drivers are installed but when I'm in the cups page (http://localhost:631/admin), the printer will not print a test page or print from any application. The LCD panel on the printer does show 'receiving data' but nothing comes out. The last version of Fedora I had running was F13 and the same printer worked fine.
Are there any other printer drivers I need to install besides the Brothers? The printer does show up in the Print Manager but nothing prints. I did have this same type of issue with Mageia Beta 1 and ended up installing a2ps, which wasn't included in the original print drivers, and it is now printing. So I had to install a2ps with F15 but still no print output. Something must have changed with the recent distros causing this. After looking at the output of dmesg I see this:
Code:
WARNING! power/level is deprecated; use power/control instead
[14.867397] udev-configure-printer[587]: add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb1/1-3/1-3.2/1-3.2:1.0

[14.880520] usbcore: registered new interface driver usblp
[15.902920] udev-configure-printer[587]: failed to connect to CUPS server; giving up .....
Any idea why it's failing to connect to Cups or any idea how to find out? Is it possible to have too many USB devices connected? I'm using a 4 port usb hub in use and also using a usb mouse/keyboard connected.

I have a Brother MFC-295CN network printer. Been having a heck of a time trying to get this thing working since I installed Ubuntu 11.04 yesterday. I've been away from Linux for some time and am new at using it. Downloaded and installed using the Software Center:
mfc295cnlpr-1.1.2.i386-1.deb
mfc295cncupswrapper-1.1.2-2.i386.deb
brscan3-0.2.11-4.i386.deb
brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.i386.deb
Was able to send a test print and it came out fine. But when I tried to send a print job - nothing. And, the scanner won't work either.
My computer is a Gateway GT5464. It's dual booted with Windows 7.

I have a problem printing to my HP printer.
What is my problem? I have a page (one page - text an graphic) to print. When I sent it to my printer it prints OK. When I sent it agian, the output is totally garbled. When I sent it again (a third time) it is OK. Sent it again (4th time) it is garbled. Sent it again ... you get the picture ;-). Alternating good and bad pages.
What is my setup? I run Fedora 14 with Cups 1.4.6. The printer is a HP Deskjet 940C. It is connected to a linksys wireless print server. It is configured in CUPS to use ipp printing. The driver I use in Cups is 'CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)'.

I have been printing with this laser printer (connected via LAN) for months without a single glitch, when suddenly today I had to quickly print a document. I could not print it. At first I thought the printer was off, then I double checked it was on. I restarted the CUPS server, reinstalled the printer in CUPS, nothing will work. When I send a print job, (I am using XFCE btw), I see the printer icon in the tasktray and it has a small warning sign.
Opening the print queue, I see "Processing - Printer Warning". In cups, I see nothing unusual. It says (in the printer queue): processing since Sat 25 Jun 2011 10:13:30 AM EDT. I can print a test page FROM the Printer web interface, confirming the printer works. I can print with the other printers. CUPS detects the printer and does not report anything unusual. What is going on with CUPS?

I am running 9.10. I have a HP Photosmart 7350 printer. I have it installed and printing. But the issue I am dealing with is that it will print a full page and then print a blank page..then a full page..then a blank page. Actually they aren't completely blank..it shows half of "2 of 6" or whatever page it is on. Like it cuts that in half and prints the 2nd half of "2 of 6" onto a separate new page.

I have a parallel port printer connected using usb->parallel adapter. Sometimes the printer prints sometimes it doesn't.
A job will go the print queue and then sit there for ages. Sometimes if I unplug and then replug the usb->parallel cable the printer will print other times it will print half the document then freeze until the cable was unplugged and replugged again.
The printer never shows up in the list using lsusb (only my usb mouse and scanner do).
The printer is an hp deskjet 690c and worked fine under WinXP through a normal parallel cable. The one thing I haven't tested (but will test tomorrow) is the usb->parallel cable in XP.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old box to use as an office print/fax and file server. I tried the server edition but I had no chance with command line programming so I've just used normal Ubuntu.
Ubuntu itself is working fine and I've installed my HP Officejet printer and it's fully working on the Ubuntu box. SAMBA and CUPS are installed.
I've then added the printer onto my Vista machine and here's where the fun starts. The Vista box sees the printer on Ubuntu, adds it with no problem and happily prints test pages, but I can't get it printing anything else.
I can't for the life of me find any reason why it would print a test page, but not print from Word, adobe or even a browser.

I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:

I initially had a problem accessing the CUPS interface (see my other post) and got that resolved by adding the user "cupsys". Now, everything "looks" ok, and when I print a test page, it shows it as completed (in CUPS). However, the page never prints.
The printer is a Canon MP600 (using the canonmp600en.ppd file to configure it). Here's the output of my conf file.
Code:
# Show troubleshooting information in error_log.

Not sure when CUPS started acting up. I have the latest 13.1 current software installed. The first page to print is always OK, but all succeeding pages are overwritten. The second page shows the first page on top of it, and the third shows the preceding pages on top of it - and so on. Has anyone else seen this problem?I guess the printer buffer is not getting flushed correctly. If my configurations were trashed in some way, I don't know where to look for a fix.

I have an HP J4680 all in one that, for some reason, does not process the print job immediately when I send it. When I open my printer's properties it will list the printer's state as idle and when I go into the print que it tells me the job is scheduled for . . . (some time) which is, I think, about 5 min later by the clock on the task bar. I've been all over the settings and don't see anything that looks like it applies to that. Usually I've been restarting the printer and computer and then it will print when I send the job. Tonight I waited until the time and it did print according to the scheduled time. I need to find a way to always have it print right when I send the job.

Title describes the problem rather well. After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!
Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo @ Canonical.
But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT.
Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out)
EDIT: I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume.
Code:
acpi-supportinstall
acpidinstall
adduserinstall
adium-theme-ubuntuinstall
aisleriotinstall

Canon PIXMA MX492, installed drivers from Canon page a few weeks ago, printed test page just fine, printed a few pages after that.
This week I reinstalled Jessie, but with net install instead of live USB. Installed drivers from Canon, it all looks the same.
Localhost: 631 says print job complete, but nothing ever prints. Printer doesn't respond at all. Where print spool is going. I can't figure out what I missed. The install was so simple last time and it should have been the same.
The net install seemed to fix drawing tablet drivers, maybe broke printing somehow? Updated kernel for graphics firmware, but same version as a few days ago.

I just installed fedora 12 on my new harddrive, and it's booting up extremely slow (but once I'm logged into the system, it all seems to run fine). Right now my set-up looks like this: 1TB HD: new install of fedora 12 300GB HD: Windows xp & my previous install of fedora 12
My previous installation of fedora 12 never booted this slow until after I installed Fedora 12 on my new HD. It seems to freeze right before the log in screen, and after I log in, both installations take about a minute to get to a usable desktop. I pressed the Esc key during startup to see if anything was wrong, and it didn't hang up on anything. However, as it was loading the login screen (where it first begins to get sluggish), I was kicked out of the terminal view and forced to wait in the gui for log in.

I have two different ways to print to my HPOfficejet Pro 8500. They look like two different printers to the software.
When I attempt to print a PDF file one of these prints a mirror image; the other cuts approximately 1/2 inch from the top of the page.
OpenOffice.org files appear to print without problems.
I have openSUSE 11.2 and HPLIP 3.9.8

We have an HP F4135 printer which has worked fine for at least 2 years, now, but it has started acting up since installing Ubuntu on our computers.
We had been running Windows XP on the computer to which the printer was connected, but ever since we "upgraded" to Ubuntu the printer has been printing green in place of black whenever using it to print any sort of document from Firefox. This isn't black mixed with green; it's a bright, lime green.
For some reason, it works fine when it's printing something directly from the computer's hard drive, like a document, .pdf file, etc. It's only when printing from Firefox that it starts messing up, whether it be a file opened temporarily from a website or the direct contents of a web page.
We've tried adjusting the printer settings and the only thing that makes a difference is changing the Printout Mode from Normal (Color Cartridge) to Normal Grayscale (Black Cartridge). This seems to be the only thing to stop it from printing in green, but that really isn't a good fix, since it makes all the other colors turn to black, which isn't really fixing the problem.

All seems well in Ubuntu printer setup and drivers. Cups, hpijs hplip etc., system finds printer and sets it up and from system/administration/printing the printer shows up with the right description Hp deskjet d2600 on local host. when I try to print I get message "started job" and another message "finished job" but nothing prints. The log Var/log/cups/error_log shows only one thing that I think is wrong "cupsd authorize:no authentication data provided". my user name john and one other Andy (I installed) show up in lp group. I could attach the whole error_log file if it would help. I am new to Linux but love it. I used Windows NT for years. I am the administrator on the box. Don't know what to try next.

It's been a while since this problem started. I have an Acer Aspire 4720z laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 installed. My laptop takes a whole damn 1.5 minutes to boot up and login (measured according to bootchart; I have auto-login enabled) (The majority of this 1.5 minutes is taken up after boot up, so it might indicate a problem with Xorg.)I don't know whether this is relevant, but when I boot up, a message gets displayed: "ata4.01: failed to resume link (SControl 0)". Also, this problem started right around the time I upgraded from Lucid to Maverick, so it could be some problem with my upgrade.find the source of this issue.ATTACHED: bootchart image from last login.boot.log:

I use fedora 13, recently updated. I used to have an issue with wine fonts but it got solved once i upgraded. What isn't solved with the upgrade is the awful long time it takes wine to load anything. any suggestions? It's hard to find a solution on the internet for this issue cause if i search wine takes to long to load it returns how long does wine have to stay in a cellar.
