I've tried using the "devices->Shared Folders" to create a shared folder but it didn't work. I still couldn't see it from the guest OS (winXP). I also, tried sharing a folder in winXP and then tried adding a network folder in dolphin - also didn't work.
View 4 RepliesI would like to share a folder from a Linux Guest with a Windows host (with read and write access if possible) in VirtualBox. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.
So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?
OpenSUSE installed in a Virtualbox Virtual Machine and I want to set a shared folder.
1 - Set up a Virtual Machine and install OpenSUSE 11.2
2 - Create a shared folder on host (HostFolder)
3 - Setup the shared folder in Virtualbox Via the Virtual Machine details or via Devices > Shared Folders...
4 - Install dependencies for running the Virtualbox installer You need to install the right development kernelpackage for your machinetype (use 'zypper search -i kernel' to see what's installed) sudo zypper make gcc kernel-source kernel-hosttype/default-devel
5 - Run the Virtual Machine and go to Devices > Guest Additions This mounts an iso image in your OpenSUSE guest.
6 - Open a root terminal and run
cd /usr/src/linux
make oldconfig && make prepare && make scripts && make dep
cp ../linux-obj/$HOSTTYPE/default/Module.symvers .
make prepare
* A commenter on previously mentioned thread says this step is unnecessary but it doesn't work without on my system. I suggest trying step 7 first and returning to step 6 if that fails. *
7 - Run ./VirtualboxLinux yourhosttype .run from the mounted iso image.
8 - Create shared folder in OpenSUSE (GuestFolder)
9 - Test with sudo mount -t vboxsf HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder It works? Great! Let's set up the system so it automounts for your regular useraccount instead of root-only access.
10 - Add this line to /etc/fstab HostFolder /home/user/GuestFolder vboxsf defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0
11 - It works for me but if it still doesn't automount after a reboot; sudo mount -a
I have on my computer 9.1 and I want to try some virtualization. I want to install WinXP or 7 as guest on my U9.1 box. what is your opinion? Which VMware or VirtualBox should I try?

sudo mount -t vboxsf share /media/share

I have a Win7 laptop with the latest version of VirtualBox installed. It's a dual core proc with ram to spare. So, I installed Slack64-13.1 and it rocks! I'm really impressed that Slack is running at what appears to be native speed, but in virtual machine. Hardware response is normal, WIFI and LAN are both working great for my normal tasks.So, I downloaded a few much needed patches, and new ISO image for one of my old desktop PCs. Now, my problem is I can't connect my USB cdwriter to my virtual slackware or share folders in the Win7 install with the virtual slackware. I read a few of tutorials on the Oracle VBox website, and several of the ones here on LQ, and none of them seem to solve my problems.

Make sure that your running kernel (uname -a) and the kernel packages you have installed (rpm -qa kernel*) have the exact same version number. Proceed with the installation as described above.So I ran both commands and here is the output :

the devel packages are version 2.6.34.7-0.7.1 and the kernel is version 2.6.34-12. How do I install the correct version of the kernel-default-devel and kernel-devel package with zypper? I thought maybe the versions could be compatible somehow, so I tried to install the Guest Addition and here's the result :

I had a lot of trouble installing Guest Additions within the Fedora 13 Guest on a Linux host. I had to mount the vboxGuestadditions.iso from the Device --> CD/DVD Devices menu. Then I located the appropriate package for my system. In my case it was the AMD64 Linux version.I ran this as administrator in Terminal. I used the "bash" command followed by the package name. This was after CDing the the appropriate directory. The packaged installed, I then rebooted and it worked fine. (Something that would make this easier is to load a script into nautilus that would allow me to open a locatation as administartor at the open window. I'm sure there is something in Fedora to do this but I couldn't find it in a hurry so I used the command line way).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. Now no matter what I do, I cannot get it back to being accessible from the host os! this gets mounted correctly and i can read/write the shared folder at home i have a win7 box that i create a share on and use the exact same code in fstab, but it wont mount the share. i get something like permission denied or access denied is there a difference in how winxp and win7 share folders? my usernames on the linux boxes match those of my windows boxes at each location. i have given my win accounts full access and control over the win shares.
i just want to run linux(guest) on winxp(Host)on vmware. where i download linux guest. and how i installed the same in vmware runing on winxp.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running VMware workstation on a Linux host and WinXP guest using NAT. I have shared a folder on WinXP, and I am able to mount it on the linux host with:
mount -t smbfs -o username=Administrator,password=mypasswd //192.168.100.129/Shared /mnt/tmp
This works fine. However, I want to mount the same folder from a different linux machine (not the host).
I added port forwarding in /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf:

If I run:
mount -t smbfs -o username=Administrator,password=mypasswd //external_ip_number/Shared /mnt/tmp
I am getting:
mount error 112 = Host is down
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
It doesn't work even if I try the above command from the linux host itself. It only works if I use the internal IP number. I suspect vmware is not forwarding port 445 but I am not sure how to verify it. I am not running smbd on the linux host, in case that make any difference. I didn't think that was required because the server is really on the WinXP and the linux is just a client.
I am running puppy linux in VB, I cant access shared folders.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using ubuntu 10.04 (upgraded from 9.10) and I've also got my WinXP Toshiba Rescue CD which i'd like to install in VirtualBox but it just won't go past the 'unpacking' part. When it says that it's completed, the only option i have is clicking OK. Doing that just shuts down the VM then. And when I restart the VM, it just does the unpacking step all over again. Last year when I had a dual boot system (XP and ubuntu 8.10 i think it was), the installation went fine until I realized that my ubuntu partition was way too small. So I could not install XP in a VM. But it still got to the actual windows installation step. I'm still using the same PC the rescue CD came with.

Everything works fine; No problems running WinXP from an ISO, etc. I have several Windows only applications which I want to run on the WinXP VM. I cannot see the programs I have downloaded when using Explorer for Windows.Ordinarily, in a WinXP only system, I just find the program to be installed and double click on it to start the automatic installation routine.In this case, I cannot see any of the .exe files used for the install.I have placed those downloaded Windows application in the same directory on my Ubuntu Box as where VirtualBox, the Sun Guest Editions and the CD Image of the Garmin Trip and Map system.I installed the Garmin system directly from and ISO of the CD I made using Brasero. It works without a hitch.Should I take the Windows e.e programs and burn them to a CD and then transfer them as ISO tback to the VM drive?

I can't get Ubuntu v10.10 to start on VirtualBox running under Windows XP. The installation wen smoothly. However when I try to start the machine what I see is a mere black screen... The boot order is fine. However it seems strange that no data is read from the virtual hard drive (which is about 2.15 GB):

I recently applied a bunch of updates to my guest OS (Ubuntu) inside VirtualBox (NOTE: NOT updates to virtual box. Updates to the OS) and now on startup, I get the error:
"An error occurred while mounting /media/share. Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"
I tried a fix which said to comment out the mounting in /etc/fstab and instead put it into rc.local, but this does not work.
Also, when I press "M" to try it manually and type:
mount.vboxsf -w mysharedfolder /media/share
I get the error:
mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device
But before I updated Ubuntu, that shared folder worked perfectly!
Yesterday I reinstalled my ubuntu 11.04 and now I cant get samba to work. I allso installed Firestarter to get internet connection to my media center pc. In firestarter I have unchecked in the "advanced options" "block broadcast from external network".In my media center pc when I go network connection and view workgroup computer, I cant see my computer at all. If I try to ping my computer then everything is ok.
