I have an Apple Powerbook G4 17" Feb'2005 (1.67GHz PPC G4 CPU, 1Gb RAM, 100Gb hdd) at home. Having the infamous "vertical lines" problem, I need to use use an external 1440x900 DVI monitor (same resolution as braindamaged Apple LCD). I also have some USB-serial hardware (weather station, Arduino, etc) and a Nokia N900 configured as a router (this lets me use a fixed IP on the Powerbook).
I had Ubuntu 9.10 running 24h/24 up to yesterday, so I just updated the yaboot.conf in /dev/hda2 (the boot partition) and booted natty off hard disk and USB pendrive (great thing having an yaboot on a bootable partition). Since Apple separated me from 2900 bucks (ouch!!) six years ago, I don't want to abandon this Powerbook until its very end. But it seems Natty is not a viable option...

So ... right now I'm having an issue after I installed ATI Catalyst 10.8 for my GPU HD 5770.Every time I try to boot, it sends me to init3 (I mean text screen). But when I check and try to switch to init5, it tells me that I'm on init5 already. And I'm still stuck on the text screen. However, safemode is still working (yeah I'm on it right now - -").
I installed ATI driver by using this instuction --- openSUSE Lizards ATI HD57xxx fglrx drivers under 11.3

I've just downloaded ubuntu server 10.04.1 and put it on my usb flashdisk, the installation works fine until the point, where it tries to install grub. The thing is, that the installer is trying to write the grub to /dev/sda (which is my usb flashdisk) and not the raid itself.I'm using a fakeraid intel ich9r, which maps the newly created storage to /dev/mapper/isw_ecdhgaacgh_Volume0.Why doesn't install use that instead? It sees it, partitions it, even copies files to.

I tried to install perl-tk today, and tried tcl and tk in the process. "apt-get install" is reporting success, but I can't find the commands. I expect them to be in /usr/bin, but they're not there. I've tried "clean" and "update" as well, and even rebooted, to no avail. Synaptic package manager gives the same results. This is happening on two different systems, one running koala and the other intrepid. Here's a snippet of what I've tried:
%heron 35: sudo apt-get purge tk tcl perl-tk

Reading state information... Done
Package tk is not installed, so not removed

The problem is that Ubuntu 10.04 as delivered is not compatible with the Nvidia driver installed with 10.04. This problem is widely reported, as is a fix for it. The usual form of the fix is as follows:
To fix the above error message use the following procedure
1) Download Newest Nvidia drivers from here
2) Open module blacklist as admin gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I tried installing Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Server Edition 64 bit on one of my drives today...
The install completed fine until it went to reboot. Then it faills while initializing the graphics. It tries (a purple flash on the screen) then goes to a text based dump on the monitor.
Ubuntu LTS 10.04 Desktop Edition run great on this machine. I'm wondering if the Server Edition confused by multiple instances of a video card? This computer is SLI bridged:
Code:
Is the xorg or whatever video subsystem that the server edition uses different than Desktop Edition?

Out of curiosity, I decided to try the kernel-desktop-base-2.6.35-rc6.15.1.x86_64.rpm downloaded with 1-click install from here
Now my desktop can't even boot and says
Code:
Want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HD725016GLA380_GEK830RBTV12MA-part2? (Y/n)
Both options got me nowhere. how to debug this situation?

My first upgrade attempt to 9.10 ruined my install - there was no return and as 9.10 would not install either, I reinstalled 9.04 and everything was as expected.I decided to wait for 10.04 hoping the issue had been solved - unluckily it has NOT. Neither Live CD 9.10 nor 10.04 work. New Mint does not work either - to closely related to Ubuntu, but Suse live CD does. Played around with findings from different threads - like taking out "quiet splash --" and adding modprob parameter to no avail Prime suspect is HD and HD controller (ATA/PATA) - but I could not nail it.

I had some bash scripts on Ubuntu 09.10 (mint version) that fail to work on Ubuntu 10.04. The line that fails is the following:
Code: # cat file_with_my-password.txt > sudo -S something cat: invalid option -- 'S' Try `cat --help' for more information. In my case "something" mounts some filesystems (that fail to load from fstab - bios "fake" raid 10), but I get the same error for any sudo command. It is the same script that used to work under 09.04 :-/

I decided to give Linux a try having used Windows all my life. The experience so far has been disappointing. I have a Dell 700m Laptop and am installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Desktop). I have spent hours searching the internet to learn that the Dell 700m has an Intel 855 graphics card. This graphics card is apparently not compatible with the latest Ubuntu Kernel.
I was able to boot the Live DVD by pressing Enter during boot (when graphic shows), then selecting English, then pressing Esc., then pressing F6 and typing "i915.modeset=1" at the end, AFTER the two -- (it doesn't work before them per this instruction.., 3) Add "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash". [URL]
So after booting the Live CD, I decided to install Ubuntu to my hard drive, now the PC will not boot no matter what I do. I can still boot with the Live CD, but booting from hard drive is not possible, there seems to be no option for entering the "modeset" from a hard drive install Is there a way I can modify the modeset (on hard drive) from my LiveCD boot? Then eject the CD and boot from HD? Should I give up on Ubuntu, and use a different version of Linux? Knoppix? Fedora?

Toward the end of installing Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (Alt CD) on my iMac 11,1, the installer asked me to type in the location for installing the grub boot loader.
I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?
Here are my partitions on sda:
...from the shell in the installer, there is no grub.cfg in /target/boot/grub.

I recently got a shiny new msi notebook and I decided I wanted to dual-boot Linux on it (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit). I started with Ubuntu, when that failed (the GUI wouldn't install properly) I tried Mint. It worked fine, but for some reason, I hate Mint. I deleted the Mint partitions and attempted to claim back the free space in a new partition for Windows 7. For some unbeknownst reason, it failed. Since I didn't desparately need the hard drive space, I said "screw it" and went about my day.
After seeing a friend using Fedora, I figured "why not?" So I downloaded F14 and burned it to a disc and booted it. All went well so I tried installing it. The install process went normal until I reached this screen: I press "Next", and I get this: (Full text here) I start to think that anaconda has something to do with my hard drive partitions, so I open Logical Volume Manager.
Partition 1 is a recovery partition (12 GB).
Partition 2, I have no idea, but it's only .1 GB.
Partition 3 is the Windows 7 partition (172.29 GB).
Partition 4 is 113.20 GB.
Unpartitioned space is 113.20 GB.
I know this can't be right, because my hard drive is only 320 GB (and those GB aren't even "real" GB) and the partitions add up to 410.79 GB. I'm thinking that Partition 4 and Unpartitioned space are the same thing, and the existence of the Partition 4 record is the aftermath of the failure to reclaim the disk space for Windows. So how do I go about fixing this (getting rid of Partition 4 or finding a work-around)?

The repository [URL] is not currently (or no longer) valid. The path still exists up to the "Contrib" level, however, there are no files or subdirectories under it. There are also two siblings at the "Contrib" directory level ("Live" and "Update:") and there are no files under them either other than a single subdirectory called "Test" under "Update:". Does anyone know if the updates that used to be available in this repository have moved and, if so, where to? If the repository is no longer required and there is no replacement, I'll simply remove it. I have also noticed issues for several months where the updater applet will go into an "updating" state and never return from it.

I have just downloaded and installed the latest version that I know of, Centos 5.4. I initially selected all of the packages and the installations crashed. Since I am installing it on a private network I couldn't save the info. I tried deselecting the packages until finially figuring out the 'extras' was the problem. I deselected that and the installation went fine. What's on the extra's? Part of the error message was something to do with a Python. I have been trying to use Cobbler, is that part of the 'Extras'.

Today i used the mini CD command-line install, got the system running at the terminal, but installing xorg or gnome and rebooting results again in fail. Tried to edit xorg.conf through nano, after sudo apt-get install but before reboot, but was fail again (couldn't open the file). I dont know exactly if its the gnome or the X the issue, because i tried at the same notebook the ubuntu 8.04, the wallpaper pops up but it freezes after, i cannot use the X. Both cd's are checksum valid originals from canonical
is there any ways to install gnome and x in the terminal, edit the xorg.conf with anything that solve the problem and reboot? update 23:11PM: I found it, its a issue with old intel graphic cards. i915.modeset=0 xforcevesa in the boot parameters and i could use the installer in the lucid live cd. but now i need to edit the grub to always boot with this parameter.

My computers have;
- Intel Pentium Dual Core processors
- Asus motherboards
- Onboard VGA, Sound, NW
- 2 GB DDR2 RAM
- 80 GB SATA HDD
code....
What happens is, the first screen appear (where it instructs to press DEL to go to BIOS), then the system hangs us displaying "Error Loading Operating System". There nothing works, except the CTRL+ALT+DEL. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, same cycle repeats.

I am trying to Install Fedora 11 from a live install CD. I know it works because I tried it on another system. After the little Balloon that shows its loading completes the screen scrambles, later a mouse pointer appears then freezes shortly after. When I remove Quiet from Kernel Params. Lots of text then Samething.. Scrambled Screen the Freeze. I have tried adding the Following Parameters to the Kernel (nomodeset, xdriver=vesa, acpi=noirq, noapic). This sounds like a common problem with ATI based graphics and all answers seem to point the "nomodeset" and the "xdriver=vesa" but they dont seem to help.

I tried installing the latest NVidia proprietary drivers, but it was epic fail.
OpenSUSE 11.2
It fails with an "unable to compile kernel module" error.
I stupidly overwrote the log file without backing it up. It had a lot of compile warnings, but I didn't see anything that looked like a compile error. I'll try to generate it again.

I'm running a clean install of the latest version of -current64.When I try to run a number of SlackBuilds from SBo, the scripts stop (no error) after the make install step.If I manually run all of the commands after make install, I get a fully functional package, and the program works with no problems. In looking as the logs, I don't see any errors during the configure, make, or make install steps.
I'm having problems with other scripts as well that are not XFCE related, but these are good examples. Another oddity is that the SlackBuild script for thunar-archive-plugin at slacky.eu works.I've never had any problems with these scripts before, and many other scripts still run just fine. I can't track down a common problem here.
