Ubuntu / Apple :: Debian Can Install Gnome / Can't Install KDE4
Feb 14, 2010
When I run it live, I see KDE4. When I install it off the same disk, it installs Gnome. I can't figure out how to install KDE4. I had no luck with apt-get install kde4 (E: Couldn't find package kde4), no luck with aptitude, no luck with Synaptic (The following packages have unresolved dependencis kdebase-runtime-bin-kde4).

I have updated my 11.3x64 recently and after updateI cannot log into any X session.Keyboard is dead but mouse is moving fine.I tried to change kdm to gdm - no result! All I can do now is - select by mouse "Console Session"and log in to common terminal. In terminal session keyboard works.I can't understand What is it?The most interesting:If I run terminal as a root and run startx - kde desktop is started but the same way - without keyboard!Hardware manager (YAST) shows: /dev/input/event0and shows type of keyboard right: AT Keyboard bla-bla-bla. (Common Genius PS/2 keyboard for 6$ :-))I suspect something wrong with my X11 but can't get what!I did not find xorg.conf in it's standard place. I have found only /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install

As usual when I want to install sid, I downloaded the "mini.iso" image and proceeded with the installation of sid, without problems. However, when rebooted I noticed SDDM was in place instead of KDM; I readly knew plasma5 was installed.
No messages appeared when I selected "KDE" from the installation process, nor there was a "plasma" name there. So can I install KDE4 desktop instead of plasma 5, using the mini.iso? (I don't like upgrades so telling me to upgrade from stable -> testing -> sid will be useless).

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

Toward the end of installing Ubuntu 10.10 32bit (Alt CD) on my iMac 11,1, the installer asked me to type in the location for installing the grub boot loader.
I told it to use /dev/sda3 and it immediately failed. I'm still in the installer. Can anyone suggest a solution?
Here are my partitions on sda:
...from the shell in the installer, there is no grub.cfg in /target/boot/grub.

Software: Debian Wheezy (minimal base system)
Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX620, 360GB SATA HDD, Ralink NIC (driver installed), I forget the graphics card.
Primary concern: Installing Gnome 3 from a USB.
Secondary concern: I can't establish a connection to the internet via ethernet or my Wifi card. When I try Code: Select allping -c 3 www.google.com the output tells me 3 packages were transmitted and 0 were received. It seems to have something to do with my router (Arris) not being DHCP-endabled?
I'm currently reading a couple of books to try and learn how to use CLIs with Linux but I am still new and largely ignorant of how to do anything. I tried messing with Arch, that didn't work very well. I've been googling these issues but I can't figure anything out or find anything relevant. I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years and have a basic understanding of Linux and I'm working on a basic understanding of computers.
As far as getting a .deb package onto a usb of Gnome or whatever desktop environment goes I think I can manage that by myself. I just have no clue how to actually install something from a USB, especially from a command line interface.

I wanted to try out another distro of linux since I am a big fan of Ubuntu. I've only been using Ubuntu for a year now but still kinda new to true linux distros.Anyways my problem is actually concerning Xebian, a modified stripped down customized version of Debian for the original xbox. It is basically Debian but configured differently and repackaged, it still uses Debian.org repos.More info found on: Code: xbox-linux.org/wiki/Xebian_HOWTO After successfully installing Xebian to my xbox, I wanted to change the current desktop (not really sure what it is but it lacks a gui file explorer) to Gnome.
I run as root: Code: apt-get install gnome It takes about 2hrs to install but then as its doing it it removes vital packages such as x11-common, Xfree86, xorg-server. Then it cannot install anything else and whenever I try to run another apt-get install command to install say gdm, it says it depends on some of these packages but it is not going to install it. Also I find that gnome is not installed. So basically it removes vital packages, screws up the system and doesn't install what I wanted. So I reboot but then it cannot boot again into any gui desktop. I try apt-get but I cannot install anything like before. I need apt-get to really start using my computer/xbox.I found something that fixes the error that says I am unable to connect to non-us.debian.org when I run an apt-get update but I can't find the page:
Anyways that doesn't work, I've also found these links that seem promising which I will try tomorrow: Code: forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=680973

This is a new system with Intel 3.2 E5800, Biostar c31m+ MB and Sparkle PCIe2.0 video card with Nvidia Geforce 210 chipset. As expected I did not have GUI after install, so I did as in the past as follows with other systems with nvidia chipsets.I inserted "nomodeset" in appropriate place in grub. Installed SMXI with no problems. Installed latest nvidia driver which failed, tried the default debian and it failed, then I tried one of the middle ones, it reconized my card and installed fine (according to SMXI)

I have gnome installed and want to install KDE as well to be able to run them both. As I understand from searching the web, I should be able to install KDE and at boot I will be able to choose which DE to start.
You are supposed to just run:
su [password ]
apt-get install kde
But I get dependencies errors, translated from swedish so it is not exact:
kde:
Dependencies: kde-core (>=5:47) but will not be installed
Dependencies: kdeaddons (>= 4:3.5.5) but will not be installed
Dependencies: kdenetwork (>= 4:3.5.5) but will not be installed
Dependencies: kdetoys (>= 4:3.5.5) but will not be installed
If I check kde-core the version is: 5:48. If I try to install kde-core first I get another bunch of dependencies errors... so I seem to go in circles.
I am running Lenny 5.0.7 amd64.

I get a login screen, though. When I enter my password and press ENTER, it tries to start but returns to the login screen in a couple of seconds. Here's a snippet from kdm.log:

I am a experienced Windows person and my roots go back to DOS and the first version of windows. I am pretty good with computers but have little to no experience with Linux or Unix. About 30years ago I managed to make a painful transition from DOS and xTree Gold to Windows 3.1. Now I am leaving Windows behind forever...
I have installed Debian Jessie from a DVD that was made with the debian-8.1.0-i386-DVD-1.iso.
I have it installed and running with the Gnome desktop and now want to use the KDE desktop. As I understand it I have the files for the KDE desktop in my install and I see some KDE files the in the Packages app. But I don't know what I have, where it is, or how to use it.
I just cannot figure oout how to get the KDE desktop installed and running. If it is practical I would like to keep Gnome for now, switch to KDE as the defaultdesktop.
I have spend some hours googling and searching this forum and cannot seem to find anyting on switching or changing desktops from and with the Jessie install.
And if it can be done from Gnome that would be easiest for me because I am not much of a command line person yet and don't have a manual for doing that yet. But can use a terminal and enter commands if they are stated.

Things have changed a lot since I started hacking Fortran in 1971...
I have installed debian 8.1.0 on my desktop (Asus m5a97 mobo, AMD 8230E cpu, e-Geforce 7200 GS graphics card). When I do a normal boot, the system will hang before it gets into gnome.
While in advanced mode, I noticed the following in /var/log/messages:
gnome-session[1371]: WARNING: Could not parse desktop file caribou-autostart.desktop or it references a not
found TryExec binary
A search of the web found the same error : [URL] ....
The bug report suggested that I place the version of caribou-autostart.desktop found in:
/usr/share/gdm/greeter/autostart/caribou-autostart.desktop
with the version found in:
/etc/xdg/autostart/caribou-autostart.desktop
I replaced the file. The problem is still there.
I have installed the 8.2.0 version of debian to see if the bug was fixed in the current release. The problem is the same.

I'm fairly new to Debian but I'm a long time user of various other non-Debian-based distros. So far, my Debian experience has been pleasant but today I have hit a minor stumbling block. I'm trying to install KDE on a Debian Testing installation but no matter whether I apt-get a meta package (eg kde-full) or any of the various individual kde-base packages, I frequently find GTK2, GTK3 and gconf dependencies in the proposed list of packages to be installed. Is it possible to install KDE on Debian without these GNOME-ish deps?
