Ubuntu / Apple :: Low Display On G3 Running 10.04
Jul 9, 2010
I have been reading others experiences of similar Low-Display 800x600 minimal color issues on G4 and other PPC computers, Thought I had it close but still can't get it really gworking as it should, I believe it is all to do with the framebuffers (that don't exist and I don't know how to make these files and keep them on reboot. mine is a really old G3 with the Slot Load R128 Rage ATI graphics, 40 GB HDD, 256 MB RAM,740/750 processor.

I am running Karmic (9.10) on my macbook air (2,1) and although many things work fine (I wrote about it here:[URL]) one of the last things that doesn't work is setting the screen brightness. The FN-F11/F12 combo does bring up the brightness adjustment notification window (top right) and I can change the setting, but it has no effect UNTILL I reboot or suspend to RAM and reboot.
A related issue is that the brightness doesn't automatically adjust to the surrounding brightness.

I recently installed Ubuntu on my Powerbook G4 1.6ghz 13". The install went fine along with the first boot off the harddrive. The problem came when I started the computer for the second time. X starts but the display comes up blank. To be sure I didn't mess up the install I reinstalled Ubuntu and installed all the updates and proprietary drivers as well as setup remote desktop options. I can now start the computer and get a remote desktop but nothing on the computer's display. I've tried to edit the xorg.conf but X has not created one. I'm at a loss of what to try next.

My current set up in OS X has an external monitor (Acer H243H) and my MBP 13" screen as an extension. The only way for me to currently get the menus and panes on the external monitor is to turn the Macbook display off. is there any way for me to change this?

Today I installed all the updates that were associated with the 2.6.31-17 kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 9.10.It appears the update has broken my stock 17-inch Macbook Pro 5,2 because after restarting my screen is just black. I don't see the ReFit choice menu (I have OS X and Ubuntu installed), and even when I let the machine boot all the way into Mac OS X the screen just remains black. The apple logo on the back of the screen doesn't turn on at all.
I can see the keyboard backlights eventually come on (which is normal when you get to Mac OS X login prompt) - so its almost as if its booting but just wont talk to the display. When you press the brightness buttons you can faintly see the shade of black changing. What the heck has happened? I just paid a big load of money for this baby and I'm very sad now I love Ubuntu but this is ridiculous.

I have an Apple iBook (ancient I know) and whenever I boot from the Live CD (Kubuntu 10.10) it boots up in 800x600 (as far as I can tell that's what it is). This would be a problem however it simplely leaves a huge black column on the right side and has a partially duplicated desktop below it.
When I go to display settings it won't let me change to a higher resolution (1024x768 is what the iBook natively runs at).
This is an iBook G3.

I just installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my iMac and it works perfectly...except for one thing. It is stuck in 8 or 16 bit color and I can't find a way to make it millions of colors. I've tried using the xorg.config...

I recently purchased an iMac 27" i7 with 8GB RAM, however after i installed UBUNTU i can't seen to find a way to set my display resolution to 2560 x 1440.
This is my second try on UBUNTU, the first time i was happy but disappointed on how difficult changing settings could be, this time seems not to be any different.

im installing ubuntu onto a friends ibook, but am first running it live off the disk. it runs well, except for one thing, the display has a problem,i guess it seems like its tiled on the monitor, instead of fullscreen, it has a full desktop taking about 2/3 of the monitor, a sliver of the same desktop right below it, and a line of black to the right.

I've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.

Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.

I'm going to create either a live CD or USB to demo Ubuntu on my Intel Mac Mini. I'd be doing this only to test one piece of software under Linux.
Is it possible to run the software from my live CD or USB just as I would running Linux (thus, without the need for the software to be installed on a HD)? If so, where do I need to save the software file(s) when creating my live CD or USB?

Anyone have success setting up either wireless or ethernet connectivity on a Macbook Pro 5,5 on the 10.10 Maverick install? Normally in the past with 10.04, etc... I just plug in my ethernet cable and update my wireless using "sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source", but I can't even get my ethernet to work. I tried to load it from the live CD once logged in but couldn't figure it out.

I started by running ubuntu 10.10 live CD and I did an install on my iMac. I went the route of just deleting all the data off of the iMac (I have a time capsule backup) and ran the install. Well when i booted the computer back up then Ubuntu did not come up as expected. After a few trial and errors I decided to just reinstall the Mac OS. I put the wrong disc in (it was an upgrade disk and not the disk that came with the iMac) so I wanted to eject it. That was a no go. Keep in mind i was using LOGITECH KEYBOARD and not the wireless keyboard that came with it. So when my computer boots up now all I get is the grey screen. After a while it tried to boot up Ubuntu. The screen has a flashing cursor, and then it disappears and the screen stays black.
I can get the computer to the point where if I hold the option key (alt on my logitech keyboard) then the option to boot to windows or the CD comes up. I can't boot to either.I've tried the command (windows key on the logitech keyboard) ctrl+o+f start up keys to try and get the command prompt up and that didn't work eitherI've tried a few other things and they didn't work. I'm not even sure my wireless keyboard works on bootup. I've tried to hold down the option key for the dual boot selection screen and it doesn't pop up, but it pops up when I use the logitech keyboard.Oh someone PLEASE help me. I have an Intel core iMac which was bough with the last year I believe. I would like to get the disc out or at least get Ubuntu up and I can eject the disk from the Ubuntu OS.

I've always been interested in Linux and it seems that the new version of Ubuntu (10.04) is pretty good. Now I want to build an Ubuntu desktop to use as my main computer. I've been running it through VMWare Fusion and I haven't had too many problems at all on my iMac (27" i5). Unfortunately, I still need my iMac since the new Steam client is coming out for OS X and I must have some of my Steam games. I guess I don't mind running it in VMWare, but I do miss the excitement of building a new computer with a nice case and fans, and throwing a fresh clean OS on it. Anyone else been in the same dilemna? I feel though I have spent enough money on computers recently. Plus, I don't have room on my desk for another widescreen monitor. I'm not sure where I would put my iMac.

but when I try to add community repos it comes up with errors. And while running a system check it says I have no internet connection...
I'm connected through ethernet on a router wich works with the g5 in the other room running osx, and the pc upstairs running ubuntu meerkat. Now I had this same problem with SUSE 11.1 and worked around it by adding through terminal but I was never able to add from the GUI.

Usually I open 5 terminals. And since each of those 5 terminals prints it's tile as: "username@username-laptop: ~" It becomes very hard to see what is what. So, I would like my terminal to always change it's title automatically to the program that I am currently using.
So, if I type "irssi", the title of my gnome-terminal-window, should change to: "irssi" for example.

I am connecting to remote Linux PCs via ssh, to update software and do other tasks. I want to send a notification to the remote PCs screen (eg, "Do not run program X, it is being updated now"), so the users do know what is happening.
Is there a reverse way for ssh -X host so I can connect to a remote Linux machine and run notify-send and it appears on the other display?

So I'm teaching myself some scripting to try and create a fairly simple photobooth type affair... I've got gphoto2 playing fairly nicely with my canon, and imagemagick taking that output and rearranging it to a vertical format...
EDIT:
*smacks forehead*
Fairly simple to do what I needed initially: Code: feh -FZ -D 1 --cycle-once $COUNTDOWN & sleep 2 &
feh -FZ -D 20 --cycle-once $SMILE This shows a countdown from 5 to 1 in images and $SMILE is big that says 'smile'
So my question is thus... (fairly basic but I can't get my head round the use of & and sleep in this context) what's the best way to call my gphoto instructions (or a script with them in) mid way through the above code?!
'feh code'
sleep 5
'gphoto code'
this kind of thing seems like the way, but the'sleep 5' and 'gphoto code' doesn't start until feh is finished in this case?

I have Karmic Koala 9.10 working (near) perfectly on my iMac7,1, as identified by
Code:
NOTE: See below for Lucid 10.04 update to these instructions
IMPORTANT: You need to complete the installation procedure while connected to internet via the WIRED network. Then you can enable the wireless by installing the restricted drivers, after the install is complete. Also the fglrx ATI Video driver is effortlessly installed via Menu > System > Administration > Hardware Drivers
The sound card gave me some trouble, as it is an Intel HDA Model, reported as 'Codec: Realtek ALC889A' by
Code:
It shows up in lspci as:
Code:
It sounded rather tinny at first, when I tried mbp3 and other model names. Then I added the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :
Code:
After reboot, my sound is full and can be put much louder than before. Jack detection works. Some people might have to leave out the power saving options. See below.
dmesg reports:
Code:
Sources consulted are mostly the kernel documentation ( Enter into the terminal: sudo apt-get install linux-doc
The relevant info can be found in HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz and HD-Audio.txt.gz in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc/sound/alsa )

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 (with the macbunu theme if it matters). From there, I'm running an application on a solaris system and forwarding the X11 display back to my ubuntu/gnome display with the follow command "ssh -X <solaris-host>". Everything seems to display correctly so far except for what I would describe as the alert boxes. The problem is they are invisible. I know it's there because I have mouse pointer jumping turned on and the mouse jumps to the default button and if I click on it the alert box flashes and but disappears. The disappearing is normal due to the button press. So it appears the alert box is present but invisible until I click a button but disappears immediately because of the button press.
