I was wonder if there were any live Ubuntu distros variants that had the TTS installed already to try. I've also read that can get sapi 5 vioces running on Ubuntu.

View 12 Replies View Relatedgot four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. I tried some grub-rescue commands, but not even the "help" command worked,
View 2 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is working at a company that's getting a lot of netbooks. None of them have optical drives so USB is important. They are going to switch most of the netbooks from Windows XP to Linux. I told him that both Ubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Remix can be used this way. He installed both to a USB Drive and what he likes is at bootup it gives the option to either run it from USB as a Live Distribution or to install it to the hard drive.
The installation would give him a way of switching them to Linux and in other cases for users who prefer Windows XP they still have the option of using a USB Flash Drive when they want to use Linux. The question: What other distributions work this way? I have looked at Fedora, CentOS, Mandriva, and OpenSUSE. Would either of these install from USB or even work as a Live Distribution from USB or even do both? Are there other distributions that would do this?
I have a 16Gig usb drive and i've managed to get Backtrack up and running on it with persistence, but I really want to have on it is Mint, Backtrack 5, if possible Ubuntu and hirens bootcd. I don't really want to use unetbootin. how i need to set up the partitions, if it's possible to have both Backtrack 5 and Ubuntu with persistence since they both use casper-rw and what mint needs for persistence.

View 2 Replies View RelatedJust upgrading to 13.0, and one thing I had in KDE 3.5 was a larger (normal) sized xterm, and a smaller sized one. The small sized ones are handy for CL scripts and don't chew up as much screen-estate.
I know I can change defaults in .xinitrc, but I don't know how to make a widget for the small xterm.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully installed on my laptop, I am trying to get my main drive partitioned so I can install windows as well, only problem is that I can't do that without using my live CD to unmount the drive. Heres the big problem, my CD just wont boot. when I try to boot from it nothing happens and my computer just starts up as normal as if there was no CD in the first place. I have set my CD drive as my main boot device in BIOS so I know thats not the problem, and I have also tried using an external USB drive to boot from with the same results. I used the same drives and CD to do the install just a few days ago so I'm fairly certain that they are not the problem. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing trouble is that when I installed I got a black screen on my first boot (caused by my nvidia drivers apparently)and had to edit my GRUB a little to fix it.

For instance; I have 9.04 installed, along with a postgres server, jdk1.6, and a certain java app that only works in 9.04. I perform the same installation procedure on several pc's weekly.And I'd like to cut the work down to installing a "custom" ubuntu with all software already installed.

I want to make a live CD with some programs installed i know i can do that by chroot ,etc. but i cannot re-download all packages again due to bandwidth limit. The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...
I have just installed the 10.10 version which includes the netbook version - now when I login to the netbook version I get the error about unity - in the desktop version my wifi card is no where to be seen and found. When I boot into the live cd version both of these options are there without fail - any ideas why the difference occurs??

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been a casual Ubuntu user for a little over a year via Wubi. Wubi stopped working for me, failing to load Ubuntu, and instead giving me some console message about BusyBox 1.13.3 dropping into a shell. I poked around, and found posts by other wubi uses having a similar issue, and that a frequent recommendation was to install Ubuntu via Live CD; so I uninstalled Ubuntu from WindowsXP, made a LiveCD, and installed it.
I got to a point in the Live CD install where it wanted me to reboot. Instead I got a screen full of I/O errors, corresponding to a drv0 sector, or some such. I ended up using the reset button on the box. I was AFK during the reboot, so I don't know if a bootloader screen ever came up, but now it just loads WinXp with no choice to boot Ubuntu.From WinXp I can see the Live CD was successful in creating it's own partition (as WinXp has gone from 80 to 50GB as planned). Windows seems to be fine, though.
I need a Live CD that has Adobe Flash installed working with Firefox. I need the Live CD for my vacation so I can use it to book hotel rooms using the live cd on public Windows pcs which are probably infested with all sorts of nasty things. Using my credit card with IE on those machines is out of the question. My worry is keyloggers and other things that can copy my credit card info.
Is it possible to install Adobe Flash on a live cd or is there a workaround? Should I use a different approach? I've heard of using firefox on a usb flash disc but not in any details. I'm not bringing my own laptop. In that case I wouldn't have a problem, I guess. I have to use machines in hotel business centers or internet cafees.
I am trying to run a script which would execute once the system start's up. I placed my script in /etc/init.d and made it chmod +x my-script and placed my script path in /etc/rc.local . It works fine in installed environment and its not working in live cd and USB.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an old dell desktop with a belkin wifi dongle that connects to the internet right away when i boot in live cd mode but when i try while its installed/installing i get the connecting animation on the wifi, thing, on the top bar.it connects then loses connection and cannot reconnect 5-10 minutes later. this is driving me crazy, i have homework and i just need this thing on the internet already so i dont have to stress my macbook with a minecraft server

I was able to change it to lenny with got installed perfectly but when I boot in linux it goes into an infinite loop giving me call trace and all I tried sabayon 4 and suse11. 1 live cds but was not able to boot into their live cd environment.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 10 on an old P3 Inspiron 5000. When I boot from the Live cd the screen is split into three sections and is hard to navigate. I am able to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and log out and log back in to proceed with the installation. The problem is when I finish the installation and reboot to the new OS it boots to the triple section mode again because my xorg.conf is not edited. To do any commands in Fedora I need to get through a brief user setup in which I cannot navigate through until I can see the screen better. Is there a way to boot to a graphical type safe mode so I can see the whole screen to finish the installation?
How can I access folders from the live cd to edit the installed files? This way I can edit the xorg.conf file before booting and all would be legible.
I've got something that's really confusing me. I'm a total noob, but I read a fair bit about Ubuntu before I overwrote my windows. To make sure it worked, I used the Live run option, and it worked fine on my system. Everything worked, it notified me, however, to use the internet I'd have to download proprietary drivers (Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver). I did it and my internet started working. So everything was fine and I rebooted and actually installed the OS. Once installed, it would not get internet, nor prompt for drivers being required. So I checked my manual and tried to do it manually: System / Administration / Hardware Drivers. It searched, and said there were no proprietary drivers. I thought that this was weird, so I rebooted my system "Live" again (even though it was already installed): and the Drivers were there again! They only show up in live, I can't get internet in the installed version. What's going on? How do I get these two drivers to show up on my actual installed copy, not my lie copy?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a new laptop (Clevo W760CU) and I've tried several times running 64 bits distros on it. Both Ubuntu 9.10 and Fedora 12 live cd's simply won't boot into X. They both seem to freeze at the very ending of the loading process. 32-bit releases of both work fine. Using the alternate install CD I managed to install 9.10 but when I try to boot it freezes immediately after the cursor appears (which I assume is equivalent to where the live cd's freeze). If I try recovery mode I can see the following error:
[ time ] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#4 stuck for 61s! [some program]
Where and which program it is varies. I've managed to install Archlinux and Windows 7 fine, both 64-bits. I haven't been able to update Arch yet because it wont't find my network card, as with Fedora 11 and 9.04 both of which install perfectly fine). It seems the kernels released in October or later cause my problems How can I fix this? I really want to be running 9.10 64 bit because I have 4 GB of RAM.
Difficult problem of booting due to the presence of 2SATA hdd (sda,sdb) and 2IDE hdd (sdc,sdd). At the moment I have kubuntu-karmic on sda booting itself and bothe win7 and xp on the same hd. I edited, the custom grub.d file to add Suse and Mandriva installed on sdc and generated a new grub.cfg. Neither the entries grub2 finds by itself nor the ones generated by my files start. No error of sort. I select the entry and nothing happens....it just hangs.I had hoped to have solved the problem of booting as grub legacy installed itself on the wrong disk/partition and never found its stage 2.

I can't stay without ubuntu a single day. That's it. I said it. But I definitely need windows 7 cause I'm a heavy gamer. But I also like to keep and use other distros like Fedora. I came to read that only ubuntu uses GRUB 2.0 and it automatically detects all the distros which should be listed by GRUB 1.0. My question is,
How Can i set up the Multiple OS machine Ubuntu + Fedora / BackTrack / Suse + Windows 7? Someone on IRC channel told me that I just install Ubuntu last and it will detect all operating systems automatically.. But I'm a quite reluctant to that kind of short answer. It's now your call experts.
