Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot From Live CD With Installed
Feb 20, 2011
I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully installed on my laptop, I am trying to get my main drive partitioned so I can install windows as well, only problem is that I can't do that without using my live CD to unmount the drive. Heres the big problem, my CD just wont boot. when I try to boot from it nothing happens and my computer just starts up as normal as if there was no CD in the first place. I have set my CD drive as my main boot device in BIOS so I know thats not the problem, and I have also tried using an external USB drive to boot from with the same results. I used the same drives and CD to do the install just a few days ago so I'm fairly certain that they are not the problem. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing trouble is that when I installed I got a black screen on my first boot (caused by my nvidia drivers apparently)and had to edit my GRUB a little to fix it.

I'm trying to create a live cd - or at least an installation cd - from a 9.04 installation that already has the programs I need installed. For instance; I have 9.04 installed, along with a postgres server, jdk1.6, and a certain java app that only works in 9.04. I perform the same installation procedure on several pc's weekly. And I'd like to cut the work down to installing a "custom" ubuntu with all software already installed.

i am using Ubuntu 9.10. I want to make a live CD with some programs installed i know i can do that by chroot ,etc. but i cannot re-download all packages again due to bandwidth limit. The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...

I have just installed the 10.10 version which includes the netbook version - now when I login to the netbook version I get the error about unity - in the desktop version my wifi card is no where to be seen and found. When I boot into the live cd version both of these options are there without fail - any ideas why the difference occurs??

I am having to reinstall ubuntu because of my silly mistake. Anyway, my questions is, when booting from live cd, how would I get the terminal to print out what I have listed on my actual hard drive? I know this works if I am logged into my actual Ubuntu hard drive, but I can't do that: dpkg --get-selections > installed-software.I am trying to get a list of installed packages because I can't actually boot into my current ubuntu hard drive

I've been a casual Ubuntu user for a little over a year via Wubi. Wubi stopped working for me, failing to load Ubuntu, and instead giving me some console message about BusyBox 1.13.3 dropping into a shell. I poked around, and found posts by other wubi uses having a similar issue, and that a frequent recommendation was to install Ubuntu via Live CD; so I uninstalled Ubuntu from WindowsXP, made a LiveCD, and installed it.
I got to a point in the Live CD install where it wanted me to reboot. Instead I got a screen full of I/O errors, corresponding to a drv0 sector, or some such. I ended up using the reset button on the box. I was AFK during the reboot, so I don't know if a bootloader screen ever came up, but now it just loads WinXp with no choice to boot Ubuntu. From WinXp I can see the Live CD was successful in creating it's own partition (as WinXp has gone from 80 to 50GB as planned). Windows seems to be fine, though.

I need a Live CD that has Adobe Flash installed working with Firefox. I need the Live CD for my vacation so I can use it to book hotel rooms using the live cd on public Windows pcs which are probably infested with all sorts of nasty things. Using my credit card with IE on those machines is out of the question. My worry is keyloggers and other things that can copy my credit card info.
Is it possible to install Adobe Flash on a live cd or is there a workaround? Should I use a different approach? I've heard of using firefox on a usb flash disc but not in any details. I'm not bringing my own laptop. In that case I wouldn't have a problem, I guess. I have to use machines in hotel business centers or internet cafees.

I'm running fedora 14, installed on one box, and live on about 3 others. I know there are work arounds for some things and not others, so I just want to ask about keeping some of my favorite games; Diablo II, Settlers III, and seriously, Entropia Universe. These games require direct draw, directx, and so on.

I am trying to install Fedora 10 on an old P3 Inspiron 5000. When I boot from the Live cd the screen is split into three sections and is hard to navigate. I am able to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and log out and log back in to proceed with the installation. The problem is when I finish the installation and reboot to the new OS it boots to the triple section mode again because my xorg.conf is not edited. To do any commands in Fedora I need to get through a brief user setup in which I cannot navigate through until I can see the screen better. Is there a way to boot to a graphical type safe mode so I can see the whole screen to finish the installation?
How can I access folders from the live cd to edit the installed files? This way I can edit the xorg.conf file before booting and all would be legible.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.
I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).
I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.
[url]
Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3
And I get this:
[url]
The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.
And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.
I guess I've installed two Grubs.
How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?

I've got something that's really confusing me. I'm a total noob, but I read a fair bit about Ubuntu before I overwrote my windows. To make sure it worked, I used the Live run option, and it worked fine on my system. Everything worked, it notified me, however, to use the internet I'd have to download proprietary drivers (Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver). I did it and my internet started working. So everything was fine and I rebooted and actually installed the OS. Once installed, it would not get internet, nor prompt for drivers being required. So I checked my manual and tried to do it manually: System / Administration / Hardware Drivers. It searched, and said there were no proprietary drivers. I thought that this was weird, so I rebooted my system "Live" again (even though it was already installed): and the Drivers were there again! They only show up in live, I can't get internet in the installed version. What's going on? How do I get these two drivers to show up on my actual installed copy, not my lie copy?

Before the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?

I have a laptop I don't seldom use, which I want to reformat. I decided the best way to do this was to put Ubuntu on it, since I really just need it for web browsing and a bit of downloading, but I can't seem to do it.
Every time I put in a Ubuntu Live CD, it doesn't load at all (which I assume is an issue with the laptop), so I mounted the ubuntu ISO onto a flash drive, and tried to run it off there.
That worked fine to start with, but I could only get as far as the first menu, I couldn't actually get into the live CD to install it, and I can't think of any reason why.

I downloaded the most recent version of Ubuntu (10.04) and burned it to a CD to be used as a live cd. While it attempts to boot during startup, it does not get far. I get a maroon colored screen with a diagram at the bottom that looked like a stick of ram (although it could have been something else, I guess), an equals sign, and then a man in a circle.
After that, it goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore at the top left, until it turns completely black forcing a restart. The monitor has not lost signal.

I've only been checking it out for the last day or so. Got 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat), and I thought I'd boot from live USB cuz in theory I'm led to believe that I would use less RAM being a solid state and all.
So, I tried like 2 programs to create a live USB with persistence, including the one that comes with Ubuntu 10.10 that I found in "System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator". When I boot from the USB it shows the Ubuntu loading screen thingy, and when I press.. anything I think, it displays the error:
(process:365): GLib - WARNING ** get pwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
(Don't know if I got all the spacing in that right, but I'm sure you get the gist of it) And it doesn't get any further that that. So I burned the ISO to a DVD and it works perfectly. I want to be able to use the USB though cuz I need my DVD writer for anything that involves CDs or DVDs or the like.

I am trying to repair my wifes Gateway laptop, model# MT3707 with vista on it. Vista won't load, it hangs at crcdisck.sys. I was going to try and fix the problem by booting to my Ubuntu 8.04 live CD but it starts to load and hang just like the windows OS. My live CD has worked just fine on other computers. I don't know alot about computers but have been researching this problem and I find this is a common problem with some of the Windows OS with few solutions. Some think the problem is in the .....crcdisk.sys but I believe the problem is in what loads next, and I have no idea what that is.
My believe the problem isn't in the harddrive because it happen to my live cd which is using the cdrom drive. Could the problem be in the BIOS? Some History. I have a Compaq laptop that has a dual boot Windows Vista and Ubuntu 8.04. I did remove the harddrive from the Gateway and was able to mount the drive using Ubuntu and an USB cable. I saved all the files my wife needed off the Gateway harddrive. This is leading me to believe the problem could be a hardware issue.

I created a live usb ubuntu (11.04) system on my usb drive. I set it to have some persistant space. I set the home directory to be encrypted (this was a mistake).
Anyway, this was about three weeks ago. Since then I have been doing some very important work on it that I cant afford to lose.
Yesterday when I booted up it asked for my password as usual but then came up with a load of errors about not being about to mount various directories. There was a word beging with ice. It finished booting up but there were no menu items or task bars or anything. Just a blank ubuntu background graphic with the cursor. I shut the machine down and tried again. Same problem. Panicing a bit I tried rebooting again. This time it asked me to create a pass phrase (a step I had foolishly skipped when I first set the machine up). I typed in a passphrase It then booted up but again no just an empty background with a cursor but nothing to click on. So I rebooted again. THis time it again asked for a passphrase which I again entered. Same problem. Empty background with nothing on it.
I decided to give it one more try at booting up. This time i get to the screen where you select if you want to install or live boot. If I live boot I get the 11.04 booting splash screen with the four dots underneath and it gets no further. This is the state it is currently in.
I decided to try something different. At the screen where you get to choose between booting from the live usb and installing it I decided to install the system on my laptops hard drive. This went OK, and botting from the laptop hard drive is fine. So the linux image on that usb is OK i thought.
I then put the usb drive into my ubuntu 10.04 desktop (i idn't trust the 11.04 copy I had just installed on my laptop's hard drive). I used the ubuntu disk utility to check the usb filesystem and it comes back as having no errors. I can look at the folders on the usb drive just fine. But obviously cannot access the home directory as it is encrypted.
Anyway, I ran fsck and it comes back with "there are differences between boot sector and its backup." about 500 differences are then displayed. I tried the option for copying the backup to the original but it comes back with "Leaving file system unchanged". I tried this several times. I tried running fsck in automatic mode but it came back with "not auto fixing this"
Now I guessed that I probably cant load up this encrypted file system without a passphrase. But I gave this: a try [URL]
it fails on the line # mount -o bind /dev $D/dev with the message
mount: mount point /media/chroot/dev does not exist
why am I getting that message when I have followed the instructions to the letter?
Anyway, I wondered if perhaps my usb port on my laptop was messed up so i tried booting the usb from my desktop. Same again. 11.04 splash screen and hangs there.
I think the only thing for me to do is trying to find out how to mount the encrypted home folder without the passphrase. Is this possible. That link I posted above seems to just require the username and password which I have.
