Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Connects To Some Networks But Not Others?

I can normally connect to most wifi connections, but for some reason I can't connect to my broth's-gf-parent's network. Windows 7 can connect to it just fine, but not Ubuntu. Once in a while I'll go to a cafe, and this will happen there too.hough, like I said I can normally connect to all other wifi networks with no hassle

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Connects But No Internet / Why Is So?

Nov 23, 2010

Let me start by saying that I am new to ubuntu, and that I always use forums as a last resort.

I installed ubuntu 10, and immediately after the Wifi card deected my network name, and actually connected to it, but then I opened up firefox and....no internet.

Since then I have been trying to fix this problem, and after some research I found out that my card (PCI Cwp-905) is RT2760 based, and I downloaded the linux RT2760 drivers for it.

The driver folder contained a readme file with commands you should enter to install it, and other setup files.
The problem: every command I typed in didn't work. I tried "make", and then "sudo make", but just got permission denied each time. I am now at a dead end. (Please note that I changed my directory to the folder location before doing this)

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? If you want I can attach the driver files.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connects To Some WiFi Signals But Not Others

Mar 4, 2011

i noticed today that the last three places ive tried to use wifi at (a friends house, my cousins house, and my moms office wifi) refuse to connect, even after triple checking all the passwords and trying various security protocols (WEP 40, WEP 128, etc.). strangely, last weekend i was able to connect to a hotel wifi signal with no trouble. even stranger, my ipod touch is able to connect to all these places. at my friends house, we even tried an ethernet cable but ubuntu didnt even know it was there. im a little concerned about this, as i might need to connect to wifi for something really important and ubuntu wont cooperate.

Networking :: Wifi Connects In Windows Not?

Feb 28, 2011

Another issue I'm having, considerably more serious, is my ability to connect to wifi access points with proxies. The story goes, my school has free wifi, but you have to go through their proxies to access the internet (like at McDonald's or Starbucks, where you must 'log in' and accept their usage terms). I can connect, including DHCP, and when I type in any URI I get the redirect posted to Chromium's address bar, but I simply cannot connect to it. This has happened in Ubuntu and Arch, using at least a couple different network management methods (I usually use WICD but I think I started off with networkd). The strange thing (to me) is that my Android phone works just fine, so although I'm not completely familiar with Android on this level, I don't imagine it's the fault of Linux itself. but I'll only be able to experiment with this once a week, on Saturdays (when I have class --gotta do something entertaining).

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Router Connects But No Internet?

Nov 11, 2010

trying to run 10.04 netbook live from a memory stick with a view to installing it on my laptop. However although I can see my wireless router and connect to it I cannot access the internet. I have tried this on my laptop and desktop with the same result. I was however able to download Seamonkey browser using the software manager....this also cannot access the internet. Both of my PC's have no problem when using XP or Linux Mint.

I have also discovered that if I piggyback, using Ubuntu 10.04, on a neighbours open wifi link I can gain access to the internet. My wifi is using WEP protection but as I said I can set the link up to the router, entering the appropriate key code, and have a good signal strength, I just cannot access a google search page.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Only Temporarily Connects On Asus EEE 1000HE?

Jul 4, 2011

I've got an Asus EEE 1000HE, and it's worked fine for a long time with the EEEBUNTU distro (a distro based on Jaunty (i think) with a custom kernel). Unfortunately, Eeebuntu is no longer maintained, so I recently did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04.2. I am now unable to get my wifi to work reliably.

The wifi tries to connect for a while, then pops up the "Wireless Network Authentication Required" window. If I hit "connect" it will try again for a while, then pop up the window. Etc. Note I know that my connection information is OK. I haven't mistyped the password (see below). Also note that the wifi antenna is turned on. For example, iwlist scan is able to find my network.

There is a weird twist though: The netbook is always able to connect through an ethernet cable on eth0 just fine. If I boot the netbook with the ethernet cable plugged in, the wifi instantly connects as well! I can then unplug the ethernet cable (eth0 goes away), but I am still able to use the wifi connection for about 5 minutes before it disconnects, and goes back to trying and failing to connect.

This behavior is 100% replicable--the wifi always works fine (for about 5 minutes) if it boots with the ethernet cable plugged in. Very rarely, the wifi will also connect on boot without the ethernet cable, but that is not replicable.

Other EEE netbooks seem to have issues with multiple wireless drivers, like in this thread. Perhaps something similar is happening here? My card seems to be using rt2860sta as a driver. I tried blacklisting it, to see if another driver was trying to load instead, but that just negated my wifi altogether. (It's unblacklisted again)

My router is a very reliable Linksys WRT54GL with factory firmware which has never been flaky.

I'm at my wit's end. This netbook will be useless without wifi.

Below is the suggested information for a first post:

Here's lspci (note there is nothing listed as "Wireless Brand" to grep out):

Code:
lspci

Which linus book is the best one to read for a beginner? Other then not connecting to internet I have no complaints.

Networking :: Set Up A Wifi Webserver In Adhoc Mode?

What I want to do is have two ad hoc servers running. One ad hoc network would host a web page giving stats on all the players and other ad hoc server to host an online multi player game. This way my clan can practice in any enviroment and setting (i.e parking lot outside at a park, motel rooms) without messing with a wired network. When someone connects to my laptop through wifi ad hoc mode, how can I automatically direct them to my web page? I've search this question high and low on alot of forums and google, but could not find anything relevant. maybe I'm just not asking the question right.I'm not sure, but I also might want to port forward tcp:28960 or UDP: 28960, 20500, 20510. Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connects But Can't Ping - No Internet

Aug 27, 2015

I've been using Debian for about 6-7 months now. I've had a bit of a major networking problem for the past 4 months or so that I've been trying to fix - specifically, it started when I upgraded to Jessie. I can connect to wifi just fine, and sometimes I can even use the internet for brief periods of time (exceedingly rarely). Then... nothing. No network access, period. I can't ping any outside servers, I can't ping other computers on my network, and I can't even ping my router. Pages I try to load just stay "connecting" for all eternity, network printing fails, and so on.

So after four months of searching online (I've read through way more wireless documentation than I care to say), I finally gave up and admitted that maybe I screwed something up during upgrade to Jessie (as a matter of fact, I did, I had to do the upgrade in two increments [somehow] because my root partition was too tiny by mistake) and I did a clean install. Since I had /home on a separate partition, I was able to keep all my user files, but all settings regarding networking were wiped. So after installing firmware-iwlwifi so I can use my wireless card, I tried connecting to wireless! Success! Then I tried connecting to the internet... success! Briefly. The next morning I tried using the internet again, and it failed in exactly the same pattern as before.

I don't know much about what's going on here, but here's what I do have available:

I do have to use firmware-iwlwifi, which I installed by doing apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi. I don't think it's an issue with the wireless card itself (hardware-wise), the laptop dual-boots Windows 7 (that I never use anymore), and Windows 7 is able to connect to the internet just fine. Connecting directly to my router by ethernet cable works fine, I have perfect internet/network access then.

I can confirm that my laptop is receiving an IP address and that it is using ARP correctly to get the MAC address of my router (I confirmed this by doing the arp command, it has the MAC address correct, I checked from another computer with my router's config page) All other computers on my network work perfectly with my router. To confirm the router/its configuration isn't at fault, I did a full factory reset of the router, but to no avail.

Out of curiosity I tried installing Wireshark (using an ethernet cable to download it) to monitor what happens when I try to access a webpage. I'm no expert on networking, but I noticed something out place when I compare a capture from the affected computer to a capture from one operating normally - there are a lot of STP packets showing up. I did some checking around, it looks like STP is involved in bridging and more complex networking setups (involving switches, for example)... but it shouldn't be found on a home network, especially where there's no bridging whatsoever. These STP packets don't show up on packet captures done from any other computer. I've attached a packet capture from the affected computer here, since the forums won't let me attach a .pcapng file.

Here's the output from a few commands I ran during past troubleshooting sessions:

Code: Select allsudo ifconfig
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr e0:db:55:b5:fe:06
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:12455 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:7781 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

Ubuntu :: Disconnection And Connects To Unavailable Wifi - Authentication Required By Wireless Network

Jun 8, 2010

When my router switches off... the wifi signals go off... then why the hell ubuntu keeps on connecting to that very wifi like hell and when doesnt connect shows the prompt to manually connect... with the wifi key already filled in... whats the use of saving the key when it has to ask the question from me either to connect or not?? and if its isnt available... just wait when its available.. and for the prompt,i have only option to cancel(because wifi isnt available at that moment if i select connect it again tries to connect like hell..which it cant) and if i cancel it wont auto-connect when wifi does get available! what the heck?

Windows has this done the right way... when the wifi isnt available.. it dissconnects silently.. and when it becomes available connects silently.. why isnt this been done this way in ubuntu??

Ive attached an image..one can see in the image that it says "authentication required by wireless network" when there isnt any.. as router has gone down!

And the second thing i want to report is that there is no way to report this bug from ubuntu... the launchpad.net talks of going through bug reporting process which is done against a definite package... now how does a user know which package would be causing this error?? there should be a more clear process of reporting such bugs to ubuntu team... which a common man using ubuntu( ubuntu says its most user friendly of all distros right?) can report..

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wifi - Persistance Or Carry Over From Live Cd Session?

Feb 19, 2011

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.

Code:
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
vendor: Intel Corporation

On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)

Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect To Wifi On 10.04 LTS Installed On Dell?

Jun 10, 2010

I just installed 10.04 LTS on my husband's Dell laptop but don't know how to get my wifi to work. I did some searching here in the forums and found a bunch of posts, but all are from 2008 or earlier meaning that they are probably not for my version of Ubuntu - feel free to tell me that the steps are the same.

Anyway, I did a 'lspci' in Terminal and the important lines that appeared are:

03.00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base0TX (rev 02)
0c.00.0 Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)

So my system does recognized the wireless card, I just don't know how to get Ubuntu to find available networks. I tried adding in our network as a 'hidden' network - which it isn't and that didn't work, so I'm up for any suggestions in how to get the computer to connect to the wifi network?
