I have a 16Gig usb drive and i've managed to get Backtrack up and running on it with persistence, but I really want to have on it is Mint, Backtrack 5, if possible Ubuntu and hirens bootcd. I don't really want to use unetbootin. how i need to set up the partitions, if it's possible to have both Backtrack 5 and Ubuntu with persistence since they both use casper-rw and what mint needs for persistence.
View 6 RepliesI've got an external hard drive with one large data partition on it. I also have four computers to connect it to (individually, not at the same time). Three machines are running Slackware and one is running Ubuntu 9.10. I need to be able to just plug the drive into whichever machine, mount it (preferably to the same location each time) and not have to worry about user permissions and such. Do I just chmod 777 all the files and folders or is there a better method for different 'users' to access the same partition? And how about mounting to the same location each time?
Now the second part of my question I'm pretty sure I'm not able to do but just in case..... is there any way to encrypt the information safely and make it compatible with a Windows XP machine?
I'm in the process of trying several different distro's live before deciding which I want to run a new net book. So I make I live USB. But what happens if I put moe than one distro on the USB? Will I get a menu to chose? or will I have problems?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just tried Centos 5.2 Live starting from a 2 GB USB flash drive. Everything seems to run fine, fast, stable - except for that the persistent feature is not working. I created the USB from Windows using the Centos 5.2 LiveCD image and the current version of Live USB Creator (3.7), and declared a 256 MB persistent space.
This persistence feature had worked before with Fedora 11 but the system resulted unstable, kernel panic.... Now Centos has been solid for hours in a row... but the file where persistence should be reflected remains untouched with the initial creation timestamp. When rebooting, every change in config, file created etc gets lost.
I'm trying to create a persistent live Jessie system on my 8GB USB drive.
If that matters, I'm currently on an Arch Linux system, and I partly followed what's on the relative wiki (Pages Create a new MBR for a USB stick, Manually create a USB flash installation and Install Syslinux), plus a CrunchBang post explaining how to make a persistent live USB out of any Jessie-deriving distro (like their BunsenLabs Hydrogen).
The problem is, even if Debian boots up more than fine, the system isn't persistent at all.
Here's what I did (I know some passages are redundant, but still...):
Downloaded the Cinnamon flavor of Jessie via torrentErased the old MBR

I am trying to intall multiple distros on an external drive. This drive has no windows installed and I want it solely for Linux use.
When installing the distros from live disks, each time it comes to selecting the partition to install to, I am asked for a mount point. I have used in the first installation but this cannot be used again.
I have an old EeePC 701 4G netbook that I'm about to reconfigure for a friend who needs it to read PDF files, surf the net occasionally and do few other things. I'm going to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, version 10.4.
Now, the 701 only has four gigabytes of internal storage, and I'm unwilling to spend money on it to expand its memory. When installed UNR takes up about 2.3 gigabytes, which leaves a bit more than a gig available for user data, and that's not much at all.
However, I could copy the live files off the memory stick in the main drive and use the remaining space for a casper-rw partition. Then it'd be only a matter of editing the bootloader in order to have a system that saves changes. This way I could fit the system on only 700 megabytes.
My question is: is there any drawback to running a persistent live off the main drive as the operating system? Something that would make me prefer eating up two thirds of the drive with the system, rather than just a fifth of it?
I imagine upgrades would eventually take up a lot of space, as they'd essentially copy a lot of the system in the live partition, but this is easily solvable by not performing them. I don't think the intended user would miss them, since she'll only really need three or four apps.
I have already a ubuntu live-cd running with persistency on a USB stick but I would also want to be able to launch it, loading all the saved preferences in the casper-rw partition, but without any modifications on those settings.The idea is to have on the start menu 2 options:1- start ubuntu saving changes (on the persistent partition)2- start ubuntu not saving changes (not persistent, but loading the previously changed settings)This way, I could save preferences incrementaly, but only when I opted for the option 1.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine is working at a company that's getting a lot of netbooks. None of them have optical drives so USB is important. They are going to switch most of the netbooks from Windows XP to Linux. I told him that both Ubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Remix can be used this way. He installed both to a USB Drive and what he likes is at bootup it gives the option to either run it from USB as a Live Distribution or to install it to the hard drive.
The installation would give him a way of switching them to Linux and in other cases for users who prefer Windows XP they still have the option of using a USB Flash Drive when they want to use Linux. The question: What other distributions work this way? I have looked at Fedora, CentOS, Mandriva, and OpenSUSE. Would either of these install from USB or even work as a Live Distribution from USB or even do both? Are there other distributions that would do this?
I want to switch to a different distro. So now I have 2 linux distros on my computer, and also win 7 (as a backup). how do i delete the other distros and keep the one I want?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to install multiple distros on one hd just to get some experience with them. I'm wanting to try out different distros and DE's, so I think I'm settled on wanting to install Ubuntu, Mandriva (or PCLOS), opensuse, and Linux Mint, all on a 40GB drive, giving a little more than 10GB to one of them to use as my primary Linux OS. I also have a current XP install on another hard drive that I'd want to leave connected so GRUB will detect it (not touching it at all during OS installs).
After trying several times to get 4 (or even 3) OS' installed on one drive using one GRUB has been a pain, so it looks like I'll have to put each OS' GRUB on it's respective partition and use one OS' GRUB as a primary in the MBR. With all that being said:
1. What's the best GRUB to use? Much difference between Ubuntu 9.10's and Mint 8's?
2. I'm not worried about saving data on a separate /home partition, so could I use one swap partition and a / root for each OS (giving each one about 10GB)? Would that just mean resizing the previous install's partition and manually creating a 10GB / ?
3. I've read the GRUB 2 guide several times, and when manually adding all of the GRUB's in different partitions to the "main" GRUB, all I need to enter is the title, root entry, and possibly chainloader +1?? This is the area I need the most help in... manually adding entries to GRUB 2... not too worried about Windows because that's usually detected, just adding other distros.
For some reason I can't seem to get my driver installed on my PC with Nvidia graphics... Only Ubuntu seems to be able to do it and it still doesn't do it correctly..

They all say it cant find kernel source/modules,etc

I am trying to install Linux (the distros I have attempted it with are Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu and Mint) on a USB drive and make it work like a removable hard drive, keeping programs and settings. I tried it manually at first, partitioning the drive with Fedora's "Disk Utility" and dd'ing a Fedora 13 iso over. I should note here that I have definitely configured the BIOS correctly, enabled booting from removable media and set it as the default with all other devices disabled, but that I have never actually booted from USB before with this motherboard. I couldn't find much about what LiveOS actually means and why I need it to create a bootable USB, so if anyone could tell me more about this that would be great. Is this (the .img files) the only thing distinguishing a "Live" OS from a non-Live one? I looked in my Ubuntu live CD and there was no such directory, but it works perfectly well. In case it would make a difference, the stick is 8GB and branded duracell, not sure what manufacturer it is.
Say I got Fedora on a USB and wanted to do a dual install. My drive is already set to have my Dreamlinux on it. The whole thing. If I were to do an install so I could have both fedora and Dreamlinux, Would it re-partition (I assume yes cause it has to go somewhere) and if so would I lose data or suffer any kind of loss, and how do I know what will be altered so I can back it up beforehand?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to create a persistent live USB. My flash drive is 32 GB, so I plan on creating a 8 or 16 GB ext casper-rw partition for my persistence (as described here.) I would like to have the remainder of the space available as an NTFS partition. However, most of what I'm reading indicates that only FAT32 is possible for a bootable Ubuntu USB.
I've been told that if I simply installed to USB drive as if it were a regular old HDD, it would be bootable and I could simply format the rest as NTFS. I'm wondering if this is true and why all these utilities I've found (Linux Live USB Creator, Universal USB Installer, etc...) insist on FAT32. Persistent (>4GB) bootable usb, with the rest of it a windows-recognizable NTFS partition?
I am running a live (4gb) USB of Fedora_14 with 768mb persistent storage. I am trying to add firmware for broadcom wireless link, as it is not natively supported. When I download tar, extract and copy missing firmware then reboot... all changes are reverted back. How do I make these changes persistent upon reboot.

So far I've managed to get it to boot Squeeze live beta by setting up the thumbdrive with UNetBootin, but it's not persistent. I found this, but step 6 is a mystery to me, as I can find no such command or package.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have tried to create a persistent live usb thumb drive using Startup Disk Creator, but have not had any luck. I have tried running Startup Disk Creator from Linux Mint 9 xfce (currently installed on my machine) as well as from live sessions of ubuntu 11.04 Beta1 and xubuntu 11.04 Beta1. When using Startup Disk Creator in Linux Mint, I am able to set the slider to choose how much reserved space I want, but when I reboot, the USB stick does not load, I get an error message about an unknown name in the file. When using the live sessions of ubuntu or xubuntu, the section with the slider to choose how much of the usb stick to devote to the persistence file is greyed out. I get the same result whether I choose the xubuntu iso or the ubuntu iso as the source disc image. I have used the same USB stick and Startup Disk Creator to make persistent live installs before - is there something about 11.04 that does not allow persistence?

View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday I did follow exactly the description how to build a live system on a USB Stick with the additional second partition for the data of Live_USB_stick. So far I had success, as my Netbook did start booting and loaded the OpenSUSE 11.2. Then I rebooted the Netbook and it never again comes up with the 11.2. It looks as if it would stop somewhere at starting the graphical system, but I'm not sure.
Today, second try, I created the USB stick with the 11.2 Live System only (no second partition). My Netbook starts booting and shows the 11.2 system successfully, also further boots are the same successful. Then having created the Live system with the second partition again, results in a un-bootable Netbook again (not even the first time it comes up).
What I wonder when I did check the USB partitions: the one (sdg1) with the Live-CD can be mounted and the content is readable. The second one (sdg2) cannot be mounted; shouldn't it be mountable and shouldn't it be formated with a file system? Did anyone have some experience on this? Or, at least, the people having a running persistent live system, what does the partition them show up?
I partitioned a 32 gB flash drive to one 8 gig and one 24 gig partition. Both fat32. I wanted to be able to access the 24 gig partition from XP.I installed a persistent 10.04 on the 8 gig partition.All ran well for about 3 weeks. Today during boot up I noticed that it had stalled at "creating live session user". I left it there for several minutes and then powered down to retry.Several attempts to boot left me at the same spot.I looked at the boot up messages and noticed this error... "unable to find persistent home media".I don't have a ton of save info on the live user account but I would like to be able to fix this type of problem.

I can't stay without ubuntu a single day. That's it. I said it. But I definitely need windows 7 cause I'm a heavy gamer. But I also like to keep and use other distros like Fedora. I came to read that only ubuntu uses GRUB 2.0 and it automatically detects all the distros which should be listed by GRUB 1.0. My question is,
How Can i set up the Multiple OS machine Ubuntu + Fedora / BackTrack / Suse + Windows 7? Someone on IRC channel told me that I just install Ubuntu last and it will detect all operating systems automatically.. But I'm a quite reluctant to that kind of short answer. It's now your call experts.
I read somewhere that it's good to partition to several partitions, and even better to have separate parts on different hard drives, or even to have different distros, like Ubuntu or this or that UNIX-based OS on different hard drives, to maximize the functioning quality of your server.Unfortunately I only have one HDD and one computer at the moment, and although I can add more later when I've got the $$$, right now I'd like to know the best way to set up a partitioning sequence.
In addition, I have Windows 7 currently installed, and would like to keep it here. I've partitioned my internal HDD which is 250GB to only have 50GB to Windows 7, and I have ALL my data besides relevant application data stored on either my PS3 YDL 6.2, which has a 500GB HDD, and on my 1TB external HDD.So, what is the best partitioning sequence considering 180GB of space, a 50GB Windows 7 partition, and no other hard drives connected to the server? Also what/what OS to put on the different partitions?
