I am trying to run a script which would execute once the system start's up. I placed my script in /etc/init.d and made it chmod +x my-script and placed my script path in /etc/rc.local . It works fine in installed environment and its not working in live cd and USB.

Which I want to execute whenever I start Fedora (it's a bit tedious to write them every time, or even to have to execute a script myself whenever I start my computer). Skype works for me, but there is a small thing i like to solve.
For the x64 version i need to start skype with a bash command so that the video and sound works and i thougth that a simple batch in folder bin would solve it.
So that it gets executed automatically once the desktop loads. Seems it doesn't since i still have to do it manually.

I have create a script to start a server(my first question). Now I want it to run on the system boot and start the defined server. What should I do to get this done? My findings tell me put this file in /etc/init.d location and it will execute when the system will boot. But I am not able to understand how the first argument on the startup will be start? I know how to create a usb startup from the iso (any ubuntu iso), with the usb startup disk tool.
Is it possible to add some software to it, for example suppose I want it to have exaile and wireshark (or any software) already installed.

How it works in Windows.
I have a server designated as F: drive. This server is a linux server. All computers that access this server are windows machines.
In windows, you can make a "Short Cut" that links a Executable program to the F: drive on the server. When you click on this "Short Cut", Windows will "Run" your program in the exact directory the Executable is located.
Thus, if you Make a "Short Cut" called "Customer" on your network F: drive, you can click on that shortcut and "Customer" will run as if you ran it directly off the F: drive, NOT your station drive of C:
Now *MY* scenario what I WANT to do:
I want to copy the above scenario and be able to do the same thing with Linux and WINE.
I have tried to make a "Shortcut" to my Linux laptop, but it fails. I can only "Copy" the program to the laptop. And when I run it on the laptop, it will not run, because it does not recognize the "F:" drive having all the data files, it only recognizes the C: drive of my linux.
When I tried to make a "link", it says something like "LInk not supported by this file".
So, is it possible to make a "shortcut" to a executable file on the network server, so that if you run the shortcut, it will run the program as if it is located on the F: server instead of the linux station? In Windows, it has a field that says "Target", in which the file will be ran in that directory.
i have ubuntu 10.10 installed on a 40gb hard drive and have setup arch linux on a seperate 160gb drive and am at the Choose bootloader screen of Arch Linux. My question is do i use arch linux to reinstall GRUB or do I choose none and configure GRUB to see both? if its the later can you tell how. Oh and Ubuntu is on sda and Arch is on sdb

If I unmount it and then manually do:
sudo mkdir /media/portable
sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sdc1 /media/portable
it works fine. Is there a way to make the auto-mount have "full" access so I can run applications from it?
I recently installed Fedora 14 and things were going fine. Until I installed Java SDK (or is it JDK). When I rebooted immediatedly after installing, startup is hanging up on starting; jexec services.
I've tried booting from a live CD, thinking I could edit /etc/init.d/jexec, but so far, I haven't been able to make changed to the local file system. How do I remove jexec from startup from a Live CD?
The /mnt/ext is mounted to an ext2 filesystem, an external hard drive. For some reason I can't run scripts from there. Please see the session below.

I am running Linux Mint on my primary hard drive, and I would like to access some folders I have on my second hard drive, which has Windows XP installed on it. However, whenever I try to use these folders, I am greeted with the error message, "The file is not marked as executable." While I know how to set files as executable whenever I am using folders on my Linux drive, whenever I try to set such permissions on my XP folders, I can't seem to make it work. The files revert to their former status, and I'm told that I don't have permission. Should I set the files as sharable from within XP, so that they aren't marked as read-only? Or is there another solution I've missed?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 fully installed on my laptop, I am trying to get my main drive partitioned so I can install windows as well, only problem is that I can't do that without using my live CD to unmount the drive. Heres the big problem, my CD just wont boot. when I try to boot from it nothing happens and my computer just starts up as normal as if there was no CD in the first place. I have set my CD drive as my main boot device in BIOS so I know thats not the problem, and I have also tried using an external USB drive to boot from with the same results. I used the same drives and CD to do the install just a few days ago so I'm fairly certain that they are not the problem. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing trouble is that when I installed I got a black screen on my first boot (caused by my nvidia drivers apparently)and had to edit my GRUB a little to fix it.

I actually want to get rid of the 10 seconds and make it infinite seconds during startup, mainly because I usually turn on my laptop and turn away to do something else. so how do I get rid of the time? I want to make a live CD with some programs installed i know i can do that by chroot ,etc. but i cannot re-download all packages again due to bandwidth limit. The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...
I have just installed the 10.10 version which includes the netbook version - now when I login to the netbook version I get the error about unity - in the desktop version my wifi card is no where to be seen and found. When I boot into the live cd version both of these options are there without fail - any ideas why the difference occurs??
