General :: Which Distros Install From USB/Live USB

A friend of mine is working at a company that's getting a lot of netbooks. None of them have optical drives so USB is important. They are going to switch most of the netbooks from Windows XP to Linux. I told him that both Ubuntu and Ubuntu Netbook Remix can be used this way. He installed both to a USB Drive and what he likes is at bootup it gives the option to either run it from USB as a Live Distribution or to install it to the hard drive.
The installation would give him a way of switching them to Linux and in other cases for users who prefer Windows XP they still have the option of using a USB Flash Drive when they want to use Linux. The question: What other distributions work this way? I have looked at Fedora, CentOS, Mandriva, and OpenSUSE. Would either of these install from USB or even work as a Live Distribution from USB or even do both? Are there other distributions that would do this?
I have a 16Gig usb drive and i've managed to get Backtrack up and running on it with persistence, but I really want to have on it is Mint, Backtrack 5, if possible Ubuntu and hirens bootcd. I don't really want to use unetbootin. how i need to set up the partitions, if it's possible to have both Backtrack 5 and Ubuntu with persistence since they both use casper-rw and what mint needs for persistence.
I wonder why my hard disk (with Fedora 11 on) is not seen by live cd distros (I tried with Knoppix 6.2 and Vector Light). In the past (before f11) this never happened
I'm in the process of trying several different distro's live before deciding which I want to run a new net book. So I make I live USB. But what happens if I put moe than one distro on the USB? Will I get a menu to chose? or will I have problems?
i have linux mint 10 installed on my system and i want to install fedora 14 too .since fedora 14 comes with grub legacy and not grub 2 so,if i install fedora 14 would the grub 2 that comes with Linux mint be over-written by grub leagacy if yes,then how do i install fedora 14 withoust losing grub 2
got four partitions, one for media storage, one with ubuntu 9.10 32bit, one with crunchbang lite 9.04 64bit and one swap partition. The partition with ubuntu has been formated from ext4 to fat32 (with nothing on it, obviously). Whenever I boot up the pc now, I get an "unknown filesystem" error and a grub rescue> prompt. When I try to boot up a live usb image from my usb stick I either get a "linux kernel not found" message (crunchbang lite 32bit) or "initial menu has no LABEL entries!" error (gparted live usb) which changes to "Could not find kernel image: vesamenu.c32" after a couple of seconds. save my media partition or, more importantly, my crunchbang lite partition (which has one single important file on it, I'd love to recover). If this is somehow not possible, then I'd at least like to get my system usable again by succesfully booting from usb. I'm fairly new to using linux. I tried some grub-rescue commands, but not even the "help" command worked,
Are there any other Linux distros (apart from Ubuntu) which allow you to install 'on' Windows?I'm having problems installing Ubuntu on my Thinkpad, it keeps breaking down halfway during the installation. I wanted to try another.I wanted to try and use fedora KDE but it doesnt appear to have the 'windows' installation version?
I was wonder if there were any live Ubuntu distros variants that had the TTS installed already to try. I've also read that can get sapi 5 vioces running on Ubuntu.
I have a problem with opensuse grub - it cannot see other distros on my laptop (Ubuntu and Mint) and the original grup got glitchy when I recovered it (I couldnt reinstall it with terminal, so I used rescatux to recover it, but I couldnt update it). It works with windows. Is it some kind of bug or osuse isnt compatible with other distros?opensuse: 11.4 64 bit
I was in the process of installing Fedora 12 when it came to the "Operating Systems List". Here it recognised only Windows and none of the other 4 Linux distros already installed. Looking at the option to "add" and then given the drop down list for each partition, can someone tell me what to enter in the LABEL box for these partitions, or how to find what to enter in these boxes to enable these distros to be booted?
How could i use Wubi to install multiple/different distros in one PC? After installing one distro and re-launching Wubi for install the 2nd one requires to uninstall the first one. Is it possible to stop the uninstall routine?
I am trying to build the java gnome gtk+ bindings on open suse and ran into a snag. the libcairo2-dev package is not apart of pensuse - how ever it is apart of ubuntu and the debian launchpad. can i install other distros repos to solve this issue? actually no i cant. how to install this package? zypper install libcairo2-dev comes back as not found.

Currently, I have one PC with Ubuntu's GRUB2 managing multiple distros (openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Fedora) with Windows 7. I would like to replace it with the openSUSE GRUB, and the Ubuntu, LinuxMint and Fedora are rarely used.
I dual booted Karmic on my old laptop. I just received my new machine, Envy 17 with a 160 GB SSD and a 640 GB hard drive with Windows 7 pre-installed. I want to multiboot Windows, Maverick and the CAElinux distro, on the SSD I am thinking. I am in the process of searching the forums in regards to partitioning strategies and hints to smooth the installs.
I am trying to intall multiple distros on an external drive. This drive has no windows installed and I want it solely for Linux use. When installing the distros from live disks, each time it comes to selecting the partition to install to, I am asked for a mount point. I have used in the first installation but this cannot be used again.
I want to do something that would make my life easier. Problem:
1. I use OpenSUSE as my main OS for over 2 years now. BUT I like playing with a flavor of the month OS.
2. Virtual OS installs are not my cup of tea. a) You don't get a "true" feeling for the OS without it being installed on metal. b) I have a OLD cpu and virtual anything is painfully slow.
Solution: Split the /home directory into three partitions.
1. Shared /home partition holding all visible data files
2. OpenSUSE /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
3. Flavor of the month OS /home partition having all the hidden .files and .directories for its configuration.
Reasoning: I can therefore install another OS or Distro and just format and install to 2 partitions. I still have all my documents and files in a separate shared partition.
Issues: 1. I understand why they made the configuration files in /home for multiple users, but when someone wants to keep trying out different things it causes problems. 2. I don't want to place my files on my NAS. I have the same issue. My config files are saved in the NAS/home/and I can't share it without headaches. Doesn't solve my issue. 3. A symbolic link (soft) won't work since it will not update itself if files are moved. 4. Drop Box won't solve my issue and just take up space. 5. Syncing the /home/ folders between the two would take double the space. Just an issue with videos music and pictures. 6. If I make any changes won't this causes issues with the operating system and applications placing .config and defaults to the wrong place?
Solution I can't figure out how to process:
1. Save my .config files on a separate partition.
2. Making a link for each folder from the SUSE or Flavor of the month's /home folder to the storage /home folder located on a separate partition.
any incompatibility for an encrypted disk (i.e. impossibility of reading the file system) among different versions of the same distro or among different Linux distros.
I ordered for an Ubuntu Install CD and obtained a CD by post (Ubuntu 9.10). Is this a Live CD or an Install CD ? What exactly is the definition of a live CD ?
I have an old EeePC 701 4G netbook that I'm about to reconfigure for a friend who needs it to read PDF files, surf the net occasionally and do few other things. I'm going to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix, version 10.4.
Now, the 701 only has four gigabytes of internal storage, and I'm unwilling to spend money on it to expand its memory. When installed UNR takes up about 2.3 gigabytes, which leaves a bit more than a gig available for user data, and that's not much at all.
However, I could copy the live files off the memory stick in the main drive and use the remaining space for a casper-rw partition. Then it'd be only a matter of editing the bootloader in order to have a system that saves changes. This way I could fit the system on only 700 megabytes.
My question is: is there any drawback to running a persistent live off the main drive as the operating system? Something that would make me prefer eating up two thirds of the drive with the system, rather than just a fifth of it?
I imagine upgrades would eventually take up a lot of space, as they'd essentially copy a lot of the system in the live partition, but this is easily solvable by not performing them. I don't think the intended user would miss them, since she'll only really need three or four apps.
I installed a copy of Fedora 13 onto my HDD yesterday and everything went fine until, for some reason, it stopped working. (Got stuck at the white bar while booting up). Well, I wasn't sure what the problem was so I decided to run the live CD again (which *is* a good CD, unless it somehow managed to destroy itself since yesterday) and I get "Could not mount root filesystem," sleeping forever. Hm.I haven't changed any of the hardware, and all the connections seem to still be good, so, I dunno... Any ideas on what could be the problem? I want to use wireshark network traffic analyser to analyse ethernet traffic in a "Abis over IP" based GSM cellular communication network. Can anybody guide me how to install WireShark in my Ubantu 9.10 Live USB drive. I cannot access internet with this USB drive but i can download pacages in a windows machine. I need to know which pacages to download and how to build wireshark from source.
I am having trouble finding a live cd to install on an apple g3 ibook. I have 256 mg ram, and want to erase hard drive and install linux. How can I find a live cd to install. I am thinking about debian or slackware.
I currently have one very big partition in my laptop that runs Ubuntu. I have to install Fedora for work and I'd also like to try out OpenSUSE, so I'll have to repartition. Since I don't want to duplicate data, I will move /home to a different partition and mount it from all three. I'd like to know, can I also do this with /var and /usr? If so, would that mean that every program I install will be available from all three?
i am still a linux newbie. i'm trying to study the features of the different LINUX distros through installing ubuntu,debian,redhat,centos and fedora as Virtual Machines in VirtualBox.As i've figured out, they look different somehow, they have diffirent managers ,i.e. for downloading or updating their components. BUT MY QUESTION: are these distros internally compatible ?
Do any commands exist in one distro but not in the others? ARE ALL Distros compatible on the CLI-basis ?
I tried out many distros on my desktop before experimenting with my oshiba Satellite A665 laptop with integrated intel graphics. Everything worked out as normal until I was testing Ubuntu on a live cd, I clicked install and it sent me back to the login screen before I had made an account. So I then chose to restart and it started glitching so I had to manually power off. Ever since then whichever distros I try to install, they face numerous errors. On Ubuntu and Peppermint they freeze on the 5 dots installation part and Linux Mint just has a permanent black screen. Even the current Peppermint OS (only distro i have)hangs on the 5 dots when trying to boot onto the computer. This has resulted me in a computer that cant do anything, i've tried the noquiet and nosplash options but they don't seem to work. I was thinking of installing Windows and maybe erasing the disk by installing another distro later?
I wish to install Linux Mint 11 with RAID 1 for my /home. I was wondering if I can install RAID 1 during the installation from the Live CD.I have managed to set up RAID from the Live CD and install Linux Mint 11 to it, but on reboot it will not recognize the RAID volume as mdadm is not installed. Can I install RAID drivers from my Live CD onto the installed Mint using chroot and get Mint to recognise the volumes on reboot? Is there a better alternative?
I know this would be a trivial exercise using the Alternate CD in Ubuntu but Mint does not have an Alternate CD (at least that I aware of).
My PC has been blue screening since yesterday, and I can't boot into Windows, which the rest of my family needs. I tried to repair from this live CD, but to no avail. If I had a XP Install disk, I'd be OK, but... I don't. I've read around, and it seems that I just need to run chkdsk, but that doesn't run under Linux, and there is no program to do the same under Linux. install and run chkdsk from a USB flash drive?
