Ubuntu :: Transfer Installed Programs To New Live Cd?
Apr 11, 2010
i am using Ubuntu 9.10. I want to make a live CD with some programs installed i know i can do that by chroot ,etc. but i cannot re-download all packages again due to bandwidth limit. The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...

With transfering files and folders across from windows xp to lovely ubuntu 10.10 without the need for any usb sticks or anything. I installed Linux via the installer which is found in the ISO image whilst still in windows.
I used Winzip to open the ISO image and found the installer for installing whilst in windows xp so it installed it on the same partition as xp.

I am trying to install Debian over Kali since in order to use steam, newest version of wine and a few other things causes a change reaction that would require about two-thirds of my main os re-written with non kali files which makes me a little uneasy.
I have downloaded the debian-live-7.8.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso from torrent from the link from debian download listings at debian.org. and I put it on a 8gb flash drive formated with gparted to a bootable fat32 partition and is listed as being /dev/sdc I installed the iso to the drive uss dd using the following code
Code: Select allsudo dd if=debian-live-7.8.0-i386-gnome-desktop.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M; sync
now it boots to the flash drive just fine with only the gnome3 drivers loaded by the live os isn't fully functional with my system. Ie. when I log into any of the live modes it gives me a message that it was switched to gnome3 [fallback] I am using the current version of gnome3 desktop manager installed from source on kali with out any trouble.
Also when I click the graphical installer or the installer modes from the grub i get a background image with some sort of artifiacts in the top inchish of the screen then everything but the mouse freezes. But when I go into one of the live modes and click the installer in their it opens just fine but when it starts transferring files it says that it couldn't transfer files from the cd after all the language and localization screens at the beginning.
I did find a misc page on the internet involving a cruchbang with the same problem [URL] I went to the folder in the usb drive in question and it looks like since that was originally post something has changed or it could have been a crunchbang format.
So basically I am asking did I do a step wrong should I try a different way of instillation, or do I have a corrupted image? also I am unable to use disk media due to the type of drives and disks I have access to.

I want to transfer the software and packages that's already installed. I have an ISO disc creator to take the current information on my hard disk and format it for an ISO, which I can burn onto a DVD, but what I'm wondering is, how would I go about reinstalling the OS
here's the backstory, I'm wanting to transfer the hard drive from this computer to the one I'm going to custom build once it's finished, and I'm pretty sure I would have to reinstall due to the fact that I would have to reconfigure and install new hardware drivers. If I'm wrong, please tell me so I don't waste the time and go through the trouble of this
my plan is to create an ISO of my hard disk, then backup all of my personal files, then remove them so the ISO will have more room (and I may get rid of some unnecessary packages), then get rid of everything on the hard drive (just use a livedisc of something and use a partition manager to delete all partitions on the hard drive) then move the hard drive over to the new computer, and reinstall with the ISO disc I created
the things that will be staying the same is the graphics card, some peripherals (like monitors, keyboard, wacom tablet, printer, etc...) but the motherboard has a different sound card and a different processor (I'll probably just install a different kernel to accommodate for that) and some different things that are smaller (don't forget the power supply)
offer a better method of transferring the hard drive (and don't say "just simply take the hard drive out and put it in the other computer" unless you have indisputable proof that it will work. I know it most likely won't work for multiple reasons, the drivers being one of them, the fact that windows can't do that (I have a different plan for windows that involves upgrading from vista 32bit to windows 7 64 bit))

[URL] I'm currently running simplyMEPIS 8.0.15 (rel 32). It's booting automatically off a USB. The way I have it configured right now, it just loads right up without a root menu or boot-options, just basically going straight to "hey, u ROOT or DEMO?" I'm not sure if there's a way to get back to the bash and load directly to RAM at this point.
In another thread I was looking into burning backups from k3b as I run live because my DVD-player isn't behaving right now under windows... 'still working on that I want to get a backup done before I do a hard install. It's my goal to get either Kismet, wireshark, or Airsnort/crack/peek running on this machine so I can start gathering packets and doing analysis. Is that a way that (atleast for the timebeing until I can work out backups) that I can install any of these programs directly to the USB (by editing the ISO somehow?), so that they'll be available when I liveboot?

I have been installing programs, that I can't use. Kpackagekit assures me they are installed, as does the installer, Yet if I am to search for my installed program, it only finds the DEB file, and no installed program.

I wanted to set up a small file/print server using Ubuntu. I'm planning on using a spare nano ITX board running C7 processor with 2GB and an 80GB drive for right now. I've set up desktop and systems and like using KDE. I've read installing KDE and X Server and have had problems running on 10.04. I can run command line but wanted to know if there are there any good GUI programs that are reasonably easy to install on server 10.04?

I am running usb version of lucid 10.04.2, with many apt-get installs. Shortly after running awhile, programs will not run, I get either an "input/output error" or "Bus error (core dumped)". (Examples of programs rendered inoperable are top, df, file)
I've read something about a memory leak in Lucid, but in my case, the computer doesnt slow down, things just stop working. Is this a known problem with Lucid? I'm thinking maybe one of my apt-get installs corrupted something. Is this a known problem that has a software update available?
Here is the output of "top" which fortunately currently DOES work, while other progs don't. (the memory usage stays constantly in that 1.5 GB range)
Mem: 3056772k total, 1554952k used, 1501820k free, 173004k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 1081808k cached

So I just installed a LiveCD version of Fedora on a USB stick. I also did a persistent disk so I can install a few items.
My main goal is to use this to remote into my home computer. I *think* I installed rdesktop, but I don't know how to access it or where it was installed. Here's what I did to install it:
su -c 'yum install rdesktop'
The installer downloaded a package and reported that the install completed.

I made this thread last night~[URL]... Because my Ubuntu failed, and i have no idea why. I hadnt done anything different or risky.. and Ive no idea what to do. So, It appears Im going to have to do a re-install. Which, I really dont mind too much... (especially with Ubuntu) But It will stink if i *again* lose all my bookmarks , and lose track of all my installed programs. The programs, not as much of an issue as the bookmarks in my browser.. I would like to know, If I can somehow access the HDD from the LiveCD, So that I can create just a simple text list of all programs installed on the hdd? I cannot access my HDD except through the LiveCD So is there a way I can do this? Some kind of simple command I can toss into terminal, and have it output me a text file of all programs installed? or something? I really am totally clueless on how I would be able to save my chromium bookmarks.

and if i didnt customize partitions when i installsed and just used the whole drive - they're both together in the same partition right, the home just goes into the root? but it still creates a 2-3 gig swapfile?
do you recommend creating separate partitions for the home and root folder during install? is there any benefit besides being able to reinstall ubuntu without losing your data?
