General :: Running Fedora 14 Installed On One Box And Live On About 3 Others?
Mar 23, 2011
I'm running fedora 14, installed on one box, and live on about 3 others. I know there are work arounds for some things and not others, so I just want to ask about keeping some of my favorite games; Diablo II, Settlers III, and seriously, Entropia Universe. These games require direct draw, directx, and so on.

The disk I obtained from a seller runs fine in live mode (no installation) on my Windows XP. I liked what I saw. However, when trying to run cd live on my Linux PC it won't run. Linux pc currently has Kubundu 9.1 installed. Previous to that I had Mint 8 installed, but again Fedora 12 cd would not run. After getting an initial Fedora startup screen, I next receive a bunch of text, ending with a text screen of about 30 lines with "OK" in green to right of each line. At bottom is blinking cursor. That ends my machine's live running of cd.
Obviously, if I can not get cd to run live on linux pc, I'm not going to be able to install. (I should add that ubuntu, kubuntu, mint 8 and pclinuxos all ran successfully live on machine and three of them were installed successfully.) Perhaps, Fedora is at war with Ubuntu et al.

I am trying to install Fedora 10 on an old P3 Inspiron 5000. When I boot from the Live cd the screen is split into three sections and is hard to navigate. I am able to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and log out and log back in to proceed with the installation. The problem is when I finish the installation and reboot to the new OS it boots to the triple section mode again because my xorg.conf is not edited. To do any commands in Fedora I need to get through a brief user setup in which I cannot navigate through until I can see the screen better. Is there a way to boot to a graphical type safe mode so I can see the whole screen to finish the installation?
How can I access folders from the live cd to edit the installed files? This way I can edit the xorg.conf file before booting and all would be legible.

I am trying to run the openSUSE live cd from the second partition of a 16 G USB stick. The reason for doing this is so that I can use the first 13G as a windows file system that Windows can read. Does anyone know how to do this?

Show me the content of your linux live cd running linux with it. (The thing is we are using a live USB, is it possible with a usb, how to do it, otherwise I tell everyone to burn a live CD, if it is possible with a live CD and not with a USB (= normally not loaded in bios in windows usb = plug&play).

Has anyone heard of this distro? Is there any documentation online about running it from the live DVD? What I'm interested in finding out is if I can save settings to a usb drive and have it load the settings when starting up (like Puppy does).

HSo basically i'm trying to run the ubuntu live cd from vista and it doesn't boot up when i restart my computer like it says it should. So i tried finding it in the boot list before windows starts and i only find windows there, no CD. I then tried installing the software that comes on the disk to help if the cd won't boot, and that fails when nearly done giving me some "invalid argument" notice..

I have a friend of mines computer that is hosed and gets the BSOD. He has pictures of his grandson on there that her really needs before I fix it. Is there a way to mount the main windows partition while running the Live CD? I have tried it and get an error but I am not able to get it working. Does anyone else know any other tricks I can do to help get my friends pictures of his grandson off there?

I'm running 10.04 without having installed a firewall is that ok? because, i'm also bugged by audio/video and mouse problems which build up and i must warm boot to remedy. (although the drum fanfare at start-up doesn't sound quite right ether?). furthermore i would like to open the port for my torrent client Transmission, but the elements of the web pge (192.168.1.1) are flickering.

I searched and found several solution but those are distro specific. I need to find out if distro is running in live mode (from CD, USB) instead it's installed on hdisk. The solution should be independent of distribution.

I have just installed joomla and proceeded to do the web install. Got the interface up and running and its now complaining it does not see the mysql server running. I do in fact have it running. Veryfied it with mysql command on command line and it complained with missing attributes.
I read a thread that it needs php-mysql installed. So went to proceed to install it. Well, I did not have that and went to install it. Verified it. Package mysql-server-5.0.77-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version
I then did a service mysql reset.
Checked back at the joomla web install interface and still, it says there is no mysql support! What is next? Im running centos OS. Also, I am running LAMP

Just got back to attempting to play with 10.04 using its Live CD. It consistently goes to the "Log In" page and not the Live CD page on running. I saw a Post specifying a F key to be pressed on boot-up to get to the desired starting point some time ago, but did not write it down. Some advice did say press Any Key but this does not seem to do the job. Tried to use the search function here but no joy. Can anyone remember which F key? Note that as a check, I tried to use 9.10 Live CD and this worked fine, so it is not a machine problem.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 fully installed on my laptop, I am trying to get my main drive partitioned so I can install windows as well, only problem is that I can't do that without using my live CD to unmount the drive. Heres the big problem, my CD just wont boot. when I try to boot from it nothing happens and my computer just starts up as normal as if there was no CD in the first place. I have set my CD drive as my main boot device in BIOS so I know thats not the problem, and I have also tried using an external USB drive to boot from with the same results. I used the same drives and CD to do the install just a few days ago so I'm fairly certain that they are not the problem. The only thing that I can think of that might be causing trouble is that when I installed I got a black screen on my first boot (caused by my nvidia drivers apparently)and had to edit my GRUB a little to fix it.

I'm trying to create a live cd - or at least an installation cd - from a 9.04 installation that already has the programs I need installed. For instance; I have 9.04 installed, along with a postgres server, jdk1.6, and a certain java app that only works in 9.04. I perform the same installation procedure on several pc's weekly. And I'd like to cut the work down to installing a "custom" ubuntu with all software already installed.

The packages i want to have on my live CD are already installed on my OS.(i usually clear the cache after installation to save disk space). Is there a way to transfer the programs to the live CD.
ps. all the programs are installed either by deb's or apt-get, none by source...

When I boot into the live cd version both of these options are there without fail - any ideas why the difference occurs??

I've been asked to create a Linux build which will contain open source vmview. Simple enough, but I would like to have this deployed onto different desktops from an imaging server using multicasting, we use Symantec Solution Suite 2.5 therefore the smaller the image the better for us. I would also like the image to be fully manageable i.e log in and add / remove apps etc but all it will need is a user account, a root account, web browser, rdesktop and vmware view open client.
I have gone down two routes:
1. There are Live-CD's out there that can do the important things that I want which is to use vmware view and I do like the fact that it is compatible with all our current hardware so I am happy to use this for the time being but I hate the fact that we have to boot it from CD as we have quite a few PCs in the room. I would like to convert the distro to boot from HDD exactly as you would from a CD but cannot seem to find a solution to this.
2. I have created a Debian and a OpenSuse build which does exactly what I want albeit taking a bit more disk space than I would like, but my issue is how do I capture and deploy this to different hardware as our imaging server only does cloning.

I'm going to create either a live CD or USB to demo Ubuntu on my Intel Mac Mini. I'd be doing this only to test one piece of software under Linux.
Is it possible to run the software from my live CD or USB just as I would running Linux (thus, without the need for the software to be installed on a HD)? If so, where do I need to save the software file(s) when creating my live CD or USB?

I am having to reinstall ubuntu because of my silly mistake. Anyway, my questions is, when booting from live cd, how would I get the terminal to print out what I have listed on my actual hard drive? I know this works if I am logged into my actual Ubuntu hard drive, but I can't do that: dpkg --get-selections > installed-software.I am trying to get a list of installed packages because I can't actually boot into my current ubuntu hard drive

I've been a casual Ubuntu user for a little over a year via Wubi. Wubi stopped working for me, failing to load Ubuntu, and instead giving me some console message about BusyBox 1.13.3 dropping into a shell. I poked around, and found posts by other wubi uses having a similar issue, and that a frequent recommendation was to install Ubuntu via Live CD; so I uninstalled Ubuntu from WindowsXP, made a LiveCD, and installed it.
I got to a point in the Live CD install where it wanted me to reboot. Instead I got a screen full of I/O errors, corresponding to a drv0 sector, or some such. I ended up using the reset button on the box. I was AFK during the reboot, so I don't know if a bootloader screen ever came up, but now it just loads WinXp with no choice to boot Ubuntu. From WinXp I can see the Live CD was successful in creating it's own partition (as WinXp has gone from 80 to 50GB as planned). Windows seems to be fine, though.
