Has anyone had any luck with AMD's actual ATI driver for 10.10 or should I be using the FGLRX driver that pops up when I install 10.10? I've heard people had issues before with Ubuntu+ATI cards but wasn't sure.
View 1 RepliesI am using ubuntu 10.04 and I am trying to install drivers through the hardware drivers in system > administration but I keep getting "SystemError: installArchives() failed" error.I also tried installing the latest drivers from the ati website but nothing worked.When I go to synaptic package manager it says "fglrx-amdcccle" broken. I tried to remove it but when I reboot, it says its still broken.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've installed openSUSE 11.3, and I want to have hardware 3D acceleration on my Radeon 5850. Far as I can tell, I don't have any right now (for example, I installed armagetron and it uses software rendering).
I'm a technical enough user, but I'm new to openSUSE and to Linux, and my previous attempt of installing ATI drivers (proprietary ones on Fedora) resulted in the OS being unable to boot. I figure that asking for directions would help make things work out better this time.
I upgraded to Fedora 14 with the expectation that the ATI driver would support my GPU for 2D and 3D hardware acceleration. I have an HP Envy 17" laptop with an ATI Mobility HD 5850 with 1GB of RAM. Well, the driver loads, but no hardware acceleration. I get the following lines in the Xorg log:

I installed debian stretch with cinnamon, I logged into it for the first time, It had no hardware acceleration and another driver was missing so I installed linux-firmware-nonfree and firmware-realtek.After reboot the screen turns black immediately and the entire system fails (keyboard isn't responding to anything).I've since tried to briefly switch to the proprietary ati driver and after a standard installation followed by aticonfig --initial. It showed the graphical login screen fine but logging in resulted in a blank desktop.It might be worth mentioning that I've encountered similar problems with other distros that use newer packages.I don't care whether the driver is proprietary or not, I just want a working display.
View 0 Replies View RelatedI have been having lots of trouble getting my system up and running after I installed a Radeon HD 5850 on my suse machine. I did as they told by uninstalling the previous drivers and installing the new ones as stated in ATI Catalyst™ 10.2 Linux Installer Note.

This was all done from a terminal... And I did this for Suse distributions 11.1 and 11.2. Both times my mouse cursor disappeared, but this could easily be fixed by adding the option "SWCursor" "on" option under the Device section.
This was only part of the solution as I still have incredible lag on my windows e.g. when I scroll down a web page it takes incredibaly long to render and you can see it rendering the page in steps from the bottom up. As well as when I drag a window across my desktop it lags behind and you can se it reforming at the new position.
Finally I tried different releases of the proprietary driver. I tried 10.1 and this did not give me the mouse cursor issue, but the window lag still prevails. These are my xorg.conf and xorg.0.log files for my current setup. Opensuse 11.1 and proprietary driver version 10.1. I have an Radeon HD 5850 card.[URL]..
I should add that I am on a private network, and only have the oss, non-oss and packman repositories available. (Is it possible to add the AMD driver repository? Because I have trid and the firewall refuses connection.)
It has been haunting me for weeks and I haven't been able to fix it so far: When I installed the wireless driver 43XX series on my laptop using a wired internet, I saw the wireless network for a while and after I rebooted my system, My kernel(31) got corrupted and I got error "kernel Panic (and some sync error)",Thus I started using an older kernel(14),Now When I install wireless driver or mobile broadband driver(wvdial), they get vanished after the reboot and my mobile device modem isn't detected.But they are installed in my system(as shown by synaptic package manager but doesn't seemt to work) I desperately want to use mobile broadband.

I have been having trouble with my wireless connection intermittently disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly (sometimes every couple of seconds). I posted a thread about this here on Ubuntu Forums titled: Ubuntu 10.45 & NetworkManager Applet 8.0: Connects & Disconnects Frequently.
Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

When installing i had to use the boot option -xforcevesa in order to get the screen working. Now that it is installed there is constant screen flicker but apart from that all other aspects of the system are working fine. In the display menu i am unable to change the refresh rate. How do i change the running driver from vesa to the correct intel driver? The graphics card is an Intel Graphics 82852/82855.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThere is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.
I am attempting to load CentOS 5 on an Acer 6900 desktop and I'm not even getting out of the starting gate. I am familiar with using linux but not the install procedure which is why I am beginning to dive into this. However, when I bring the system up off the Linux boot disk and go to install it's not even giving me the option of the controller so I can begin installing the os from the dvd-rom. This is what acer lists as the controller for the 6900: ich8 serial ata storage controller 2820 linux driver. I cannot find this driver for linux anywhere.

I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. When I try to install I get what is below. How do I resolve? Do I need to identify where the driver is? If so, how?

I just installed Linux Mint 9 as a dual boot install with Win XP. Trying to activate wireless network card driver and video driver. Pops up: "You are not authorized to perform this action".How do I get authorized?
Now every time I boot Win XP, the Internet Explorer menu bar is all blacked out and goofy. If I log out and back in it corrects itself. If I reboot it's blacked out again. Re-installed IE8. Still blacks out.Also Firefox in Win XP crashes expectantly. It has NEVER crashed on me previously.
i upgrade a machine running centos 5.4 to 5.5 this morning. After the update the X start i saw the pointer and a black backgroud only the desktop doesn't appear.The machine is a barebone with this configuration

View 3 Replies View RelatedNo wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.
My gentoo laptop doesn't have a serial port, so I got a usb-serial (RS-232) adapter from ebay. However when I plug it in, the only thing dmesg mentiones is: Code:usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2I've tried to look for a kernel driver in "make menuconfig" by pressing "/" and typing 232. Nothing about RS-232. Device Drivers -> Character drivers -> Serial drivers has 8250 and UART as a module. Device Drivers -> USB support -> USB serial converter support has in-kernel: USB generic serial driver, and FTDI Single port driver as a module, but it still isn't getting recognized.Is there some module i forgot to enable, or do i have to download a separate module from somewhere?

I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? I have a late model Lexmark Prestige Pro805 printer. Lexmark supplies a Linux driver which you download. No drivers appear on the Ubuntu Add Printer list. The Lexmark download also installs utilities, etc. Some stuff appears installed in synaptic. I don't know if uninstalling these only uninstalls the applications and not the actual driver. For some reason, I have had issues recently with this printer malfunctioning frequently with my Linux machines over wifi. They have pushed new firmware down to the printer, and this may be a cause. There is also newer Linux print drivers which I installed, but I do not have a clue as to whether the new drivers are actually in use. On a windows machine I would have uninstalled the printer prior to re-installation. Clueless how to accomplish the same on Ubuntu.

I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.
I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results.The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.
i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
In lmms there is no sound and it says:
No audio-driver working - falling back to dummy-audio-driver
in the command prompt. Sound works everywhere else just not lmms.
I had a problem with using ndiswrapper to install Windows driver on Netgear WN511TA wireless adapter card. Problem solved by replacing Netgear WN511TA with Airlink101 AWLC6080 PCMCIA wireless adapter to work in my triple-boot XP Pro/Ubuntu Karmic/openSUSE 11.2 Toshiba laptop and using the latest Linux driver version 2.3.0.0 dated January 29, 2010 from Ralinktech site. I am wondering if I can use the same Linux driver (RT2860sta) for openSUSE 11.2 on my triple-boot XP Pro/Karmic/openSUSE laptop, ie. copying over instead of building and compiling driver from source again, because I don't quite understand the build instruction given in the README file of Ralink's Linux driver file. Specifically, I don't know how to "define the GCC and LD (?) of the target machine, and define the compiler flags CFLAGS(?), modify your need (?)", etc. I already have gcc, cpp and make installed on the Ubuntu and openSUSE parts of my machine. I did try ndiswrapper in openSUSE but it doesn't work for the Windows version of the latest Ralink driver (error: invalid driver rt2860.inf).
