OpenSUSE Hardware :: How To Clear Proprietary NVidia Driver And Replace With Nouveau Driver

Jun 13, 2011

There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed. The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.

Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver

Oct 23, 2010

No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.

However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.

I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Using The Nouveu Driver Or The Nvidia Binary Driver?

Mar 12, 2011

How do I check if I'm using the Nouveu driver or the Nvidia Binary driver? I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? Actually, scratch that last sentence. I just did lspci -v and got this output:

Hardware :: Nvidia (with Proprietary Driver) Vs ATI (with Free)

Mar 8, 2011

I currently have an nvidia card (GeForce 8800 GTX) and use the proprietary driver since I game a lot on wine (games like mass effect 2, prince of persia 2008, and some more recent games). I was wondering if using an equivalent ATI card with the free driver would show the same performance as my current on, or if the ATI driver isn't THAT mature yet. Would I be able to play the latest games with it on wine, or am I better of with nvidia and the propietary driver.

(I definitely know nouveau doesn't stand up to it *yet*, i.e., Prince of Persia complains about lack of video features). (note I don't care about a nouveau vs radeon debate, nor for a nvidia vs ati debate, the question is ati+free vs nvidia+propietary).

Ubuntu :: Installed, Libgl1-mesa-swx11 Must Be Replaced By Libgl1-mesa-glx.libgl1-mesa-glx Is The Hardware Rasterizer And Doesn't Work?

Jun 6, 2010

Short description of the problem: I need to have freeglut3-dev, libglu1-mesa-dev, libgl1-mesa-dev and libgl1-mesa-swx11 installed at the same time. How to do it?There are no hardware drivers for my GPU (ATI Radeon HD 4290), so I must use the software rasterizer:libgl1-mesa-swx11. Fortunately I have a very fast hex-core CPU so rendering in software doesn't slow down the computer.I make OpenGL games in C, so I need these packages to be able to compile my games:freeglut3-devlibglu1-mesa-devlibgl1-mesa-devBut if they are installed, libgl1-mesa-swx11 must be replaced by libgl1-mesa-glx.libgl1-mesa-glx is the hardware rasterizer and doesn't work, because I don't have the needed hardware drivers.Currently, I have to install/remove/reinstall those 4 packages before compiling a program and then do it again after compiling to be able to run the program,

2- I have two graphic cards (integrated Intel with the i5 processor), and i can't change the default one to the ati! because debian had set the intel card as a native one...! that's why i´ m wondering if just an installation of the non-free drivers will solve this or not! Debian Hardware :: Linux Non-free ATI Driver Causing Login Freeze

Oct 22, 2015

Whilst watching my system boot I see the following error:

'drm: radeon pci probe error kernel requires firmware non-free'.

When I install the ATI graphics driver, sure - I get all the screen resolutions I could possibly want, but the cost appears to be that it makes it causes my system to freeze at the user name and password screen. Sometimes the cursor blinks teasingly, but nothing appears as I type; sometimes the cursor itself is frozen.

My question isn't about the myriad of theoretical key combinations that might work - none of them have thus far.

I'm wondering whether I can simply continue using the default driver that the debian installer (ver. 8 stable 'Jessie') installed on my system. It's true that I only get 3 choices of screen resolution - 1152x864, 1024x768, and 800x600 - but my system seems so much more stable than when I install the proprietary ATI driver.

Aside from the login screen freezing - more often than not, strange things were happening keyboard wise - especially when composing posts for forums - the cursor would suddenly jump to another line of previously composed text for example!

So, can I keep the default driver or is it best to install the ATI driver and attempt to troubleshoot it? Is it even possible to troubleshoot a problematic driver - I knew how to do such things in Windows, but still learning about linux.

Also, when my system freezes at login (for whatever reason), if I'm obliged to simply hit the laptop power button to power down and press it again to restart - is this potentially damaging/corrupting my system - Debian, or indeed my hard drive?

Going forward, is the ATI driver issue likely be addressed in future Debian releases? Obviously, I would prefer to have the proper driver installed so as to have more screen resolution options - since I will be using my laptop for developing and testing web sites.

General :: Hard Drive - Driver Keep Saying 0 Bytes Free And Only Root Can Write?

Nov 26, 2010

I have a very very insane problem with my ssd sata harddisk. I did fill the harddisk, and Thunderbird complained about "no space left on device". But even if I delete some files from the harddisk, df will still say 0 blocks free. But it will decrease the number of used blocks. So it looks like it is freeing the blocks and deleting the files, but it don't put the blocks back to the free pool.

But here is where things get insane: If I log in with my normal user, I get a "No free space" when I try to write to the harddisk. But If i log in as root I can write to the file system, despite the fact that df is saying 0 blocks free. I did try to run fsck -f but it just run its test and then say that anything is fine. But it run for less then 10 seconds, is this expected on a 40GB ssd partition?.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Use The Ralink RT2860 Driver 11.2 - (error: Invalid Driver Rt2860.inf)?

Feb 2, 2010

I had a problem with using ndiswrapper to install Windows driver on Netgear WN511TA wireless adapter card. Problem solved by replacing Netgear WN511TA with Airlink101 AWLC6080 PCMCIA wireless adapter to work in my triple-boot XP Pro/Ubuntu Karmic/openSUSE 11.2 Toshiba laptop and using the latest Linux driver version 2.3.0.0 dated January 29, 2010 from Ralinktech site. I followed driver instruction in a Ubuntuforums tutorial (Howto: Ralink RT2860(m) PCI(e) RT2860...on Intrepid).

I am wondering if I can use the same Linux driver (RT2860sta) for openSUSE 11.2 on my triple-boot XP Pro/Karmic/openSUSE laptop, ie. copying over instead of building and compiling driver from source again, because I don't quite understand the build instruction given in the README file of Ralink's Linux driver file. Specifically, I don't know how to "define the GCC and LD (?) of the target machine, and define the compiler flags CFLAGS(?), modify your need (?)", etc. I already have gcc, cpp and make installed on the Ubuntu and openSUSE parts of my machine. I did try ndiswrapper in openSUSE but it doesn't work for the Windows version of the latest Ralink driver (error: invalid driver rt2860.inf).
