Ubuntu :: ATI 5850 Driver For 10.10?

Jan 26, 2011

Has anyone had any luck with AMD's actual ATI driver for 10.10 or should I be using the FGLRX driver that pops up when I install 10.10? I've heard people had issues before with Ubuntu+ATI cards but wasn't sure.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Driver For Radeon 5850 On 11.3?

Aug 4, 2010

I've installed openSUSE 11.3, and I want to have hardware 3D acceleration on my Radeon 5850. Far as I can tell, I don't have any right now (for example, I installed armagetron and it uses software rendering).

I'm a technical enough user, but I'm new to openSUSE and to Linux, and my previous attempt of installing ATI drivers (proprietary ones on Fedora) resulted in the OS being unable to boot. I figure that asking for directions would help make things work out better this time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse Radeon HD 5850 Drivers?

Mar 7, 2010

I have been having lots of trouble getting my system up and running after I installed a Radeon HD 5850 on my suse machine. I did as they told by uninstalling the previous drivers and installing the new ones as stated in ATI Catalystâ„¢ 10.2 Linux Installer Note.

2)sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-2-x86.x86_64.run
7) /usr/bin/aticonfig --initial

This was all done from a terminal... And I did this for Suse distributions 11.1 and 11.2. Both times my mouse cursor disappeared, but this could easily be fixed by adding the option "SWCursor" "on" option under the Device section.

This was only part of the solution as I still have incredible lag on my windows e.g. when I scroll down a web page it takes incredibaly long to render and you can see it rendering the page in steps from the bottom up. As well as when I drag a window across my desktop it lags behind and you can se it reforming at the new position.

Finally I tried different releases of the proprietary driver. I tried 10.1 and this did not give me the mouse cursor issue, but the window lag still prevails. These are my xorg.conf and xorg.0.log files for my current setup. Opensuse 11.1 and proprietary driver version 10.1. I have an Radeon HD 5850 card.[URL]..

I should add that I am on a private network, and only have the oss, non-oss and packman repositories available. (Is it possible to add the AMD driver repository? Because I have trid and the firewall refuses connection.)

Ubuntu :: Unable To Boot After Nvidia Driver Install?

Mar 4, 2010

This is my first day with Umbuntu and my first post here at the forums. I bought a Dell Pentium 4 with a fresh install of Umbuntu 9.10 on it. Worked well until I decided to do something a newbie shouldn't do and install a graphics card and drivers. The graphics card worked just fine until the drivers were installed and I tried to reboot the system. Now it no longer boots. Some specifics for you.

Since my time with Ubuntu is limited to hours, the nomenclature will probably be wrong. But I will try to get the point across. The card is a EVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. On first start up with this card the computer functioned fine. I went to a place where you could change the screen options. There were three selections and I don't remember the names (idiot that I am). I selected the middle one. The OS stated that in order to utilize all the capabilities of nvidia graphics cards blah, blah, blah, a driver would need to be downloaded and activated. No name, just a driver. OK, do it (sounds kinda windows like). The download seemed to go OK, but now I needed to reboot to activate the driver.

Now: Ubuntu logo comes up. Screen goes to a text screen that says:

Ubuntu 9.10 dave-ubuntu tty1
dave-ubuntu login:

This screen flashes and does not take input from the keyboard or mouse. Next, I removed the graphics card and used the on-board graphics. Same result with faster flashing. What have I done? Apparently Ubuntu and Linux in general don't have a system recovery option? I read something about the GRUB menu, but the system flasher GRUB loading for half a second and then is on to locking up. I can't seem to get to a GRUB menu. What a way to finish the day.

Ubuntu :: ATI Driver Unable To Install Properly On Natty

Apr 30, 2011

I've recently switched over to Ubuntu 11.04. I installed Natty by wiping out Maverick entirely. Everything worked well, until I tried to install ATI graphics drivers through the instructions found here: [URL] The installation goes fine without any errors; however, when I reboot, nothing shows up on the screen. I can hear Ubuntu's startup sounds, but there are no visuals. When I attempt to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center in Recovery Mode, I get this error:

Quote: There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling these drivers multiple times, and I've also tried using the generic driver detected by "Additional Drivers". None of these work at all, I cannot see anything on the screen when any ATI drivers are enabled. I've even tried re-updating Natty via CD, but none of this works. I have a Radeon HD 3450 graphics card, and my CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5400+. I'm on 64 bit Ubuntu. I had no problems with my drivers on Maverick.

Fedora Hardware :: F14 And Evergreen GPU's (HD 5850)?

Nov 26, 2010

I upgraded to Fedora 14 with the expectation that the ATI driver would support my GPU for 2D and 3D hardware acceleration. I have an HP Envy 17" laptop with an ATI Mobility HD 5850 with 1GB of RAM. Well, the driver loads, but no hardware acceleration. I get the following lines in the Xorg log:

[ 1683.845] (II) RADEON(0): MC_AGP_LOCATION : 0x003f0000
[ 1683.855] (==) RADEON(0): Backing store disabled
[ 1683.855] (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

I don't have an xorg.conf file, and based on everything I read I was expecting acceleration support. I also installed the MESA experimental driver package to see if that would change anything, but no joy

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Install Wireless Driver For Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN

Aug 2, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and can browse the internet via cable, but wireless isnt working. My wireless driver is "Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN".

In the windows device manager, I found the corresponding inf file to be oem20.inf which I tried to install it through "Setup Windows Driver" but it gave an error saying invalid driver. I also tried installing the Broadcom STA driver, but that didnot help.

I am dual booting with Windows 7, and i installed ubuntu through the windows wubi installer. My laptop is HP Pavilion dv4. I have installed the regular Ubuntu desktop and have made all upgrades. The results from lspci command i have added below.

Fedora Hardware :: Unable To Install The Regular Driver?

Nov 22, 2010

I have a problem: My Fedora runs slowly. Any activity that is even remotely graphics-heavy (such as scrolling up and down in a web browser) lags massively. I suspect this is caused by my video card driver.

I am running Fedora 13 and KDE 4.5.3 on a 64-bit machine. My video card is an ATI Radeon HD5750. I am using the Catalyst 10.9 "hotfix", because I am unable to install the regular driver, as I described in this thread.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Use The YaNDP Yet Another Nvidia Driver

Feb 16, 2010

I installed openSuSE 11.2 three days ago, the first time, and have been trying to get the nvidia video driver to work ever since. So far, no luck. I have a dual-boot system with Windows 2k (legacy programs) and the graphics card works fine there, so the problem isn't hardware related. The nv driver also works under 11.2, but not well.The graphics card is a GeForce 6200, and the computer is an old Tyan Thunder S2885 with dual Opteron processors. I'm in 64 bit mode for the Linux install.

I've tried installing the video drivers by:Doing a fresh install, loading in the nvidia repository, then doing online update. The two nvidia drivers were loaded (nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop and x11-video-nvidiaG02), but when I tried to reboot I end up with a blank screen and no sync to the monitor (Hitachi SuperScan Elite 751 CRT type). Rebooting in safe mode brings up the nv driver, which works. Doing a fresh install, doing online update,then loading in the nvidia repository, refreshing it, and installing the same two RPMs . . . with the same result. Doing a fresh install and using the "one click" install from this web site. Same result.

Doing a fresh install, doing online update, selecting the pattern "Linux Kernel Development" and installing it, downloading the Nvidia installer NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53-pkg2.run and installing it. Same result.

Same as above, but then using Sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia, even though Sax is depreciated. Same result. I've tried modprobe nvidia. Nothing. Over the last two days I've probably tried several other iterations as well, and forgot them, but nothing worked, it's always the same result.

Another weirdness, when I have YaST do "Hardware Information" it has no trouble identifying the monitor a getting it's info, but when I click the Display icon on the panel it tells me that it can't identify the monitor.

Here's the basic system info:

Code:

Directory: /home/BillyDoc/Desktop
Tue Feb 16 09:21:23 CST 2010
BillyDoc@linux-k7w3:~/Desktop> lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 9647368 0
BillyDoc@linux-k7w3:~/Desktop> su

[code]....

I'm definitely a novice to this sort of thing, and at this point I haven't a clue what's going on. It looks like the nvidia driver get's installed alright, but X simply doesn't know it's there. Oh, and another thing. When I go into YaST to look for the "Graphics Card and Monitor" program . it's missing! I assume this is because Sax is depreciated, but what's the substitute?

Ubuntu :: Monitor Dims On Left Side / Unable To Install NVIDIA Driver

Aug 6, 2011

I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 and there was a dim spot on the left side of the monitor. I could move the window to the right, but anything on the left was dim, and if I set the window to full screen, the whole screen went dim. I was able to find a fix online, I followed the instructions, and Voila! It was fixed, so I knew it was not a hardware issue. I installed 11.04, and have the same dim screen issue, but I can't find the instructions that fixed it last time. I tried to download and install the latest driver from NVIDIA, and I get this error:

Installation :: Unable To Install Nvidia Driver After Using Dd To Copy Drive?

Sep 25, 2009

I was recently able to obtain a new laptop at work. Rather than reinstalling the OS, reconfiguring all of the software, and then copying over all of my data from my old laptop -- I decided to try to use dd to clone my drive. It worked pretty darn well (thanks Saikee!). However, I have two problems that I have noticed so far:

1) The system does not seem to offer me the option to install the proprietary nvidia driver. I was able to manually install the nvidia-glx-180 package and then edit xorg.conf appropriately and I'm running with the nvidia driver now. So this problem is resolved (though I still find it odd it didn't even offer my the "restricted hardware drivers" option in System -> Administration).

2) Wireless is not working. I checked dmesg and it doesn't seem to have any errors in it. Here is a list of things I have checked/found which I think might be relevant:

- Oddly enough it seems that my wired device always gets renamed from eth0 to eth1, and my wireless device gets renamed from wlan0 to wlan1. I'm not sure why (though I would prefer them to be eth0 and wlan0).

- dmesg output looks good shows some message about the wlan1 link not being ready

Code:

bmayes@bdmlin:~$ dmesg | grep wlan
[ 10.915831] udev: renamed network interface wlan0 to wlan1
[ 185.179556] bridge-wlan0: peer interface wlan0 not found, will wait for it to come up

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Unable To Install Graphic Card Driver For Dell Precision T3500?

Jul 28, 2010

I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm

I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm

I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....

Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.
