Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Wirelessly Via Command Line?

May 11, 2010

For reasons that are not terribly interesting I decided it would be a great idea to remove and re-install the xserver-xorg package. Which proved to be a much larger mistake than I imagined it would be. I purged the package, and then restarted.Naturally I need to have an internet connection to use apt-get to reinstall xserver-xorg, which is where my idea falls apart.I followed the directions in the How To: Manual Network Configuration. However, after I enter the command "sudo dhclient wlan1" I get the line "wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801" twice prior to the output that the above link shows. Then I just get DHCPDISCOVER messages until I get a "No DHCPOFFERS received. No working leases in persistent database - sleeping."

I'm connecting with WEP to a router that I know works (because I'm using it to type this on my laptop right now) and I know that the wireless adapter(RTL8187) is installed properly because it automatically connected to my network when I had xserver-xorg still installed.I'm running ubuntu 9.04.I've searched for a few hours and I'm no closer to resolving the issue.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To WPA / WPA2 Network Wirelessly ( BCM 4315 )?

Nov 10, 2010

I've recently installed Lucid Lynx 10.04 on my Dell Studio which uses an internal BCM4315 wi-fi card to connect to the internet. I was hoping it would work upon the install, but deep down I knew I'd have to tweak it a little bit to get it up and running the way I wanted. The card was instantly recognized but, at first, wasn't detecting wireless networks. This was quickly and painlessly fixed using System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, which I used to install Broadcom B43 wireless driver (b43-fwcutter). I rebooted and could not detect the local wireless networks.

I entered my password to my home network (correctly, I quadruple checked) but, unfortunately, it continuously tries to connect to the network with no successful. Occasionally I'm prompted to re-entered the password and the process repeats. The network I'm trying to connect to is a WPA/WPA2 network which I've heard to be troublesome. I haven't yet tried connecting to a WEP network but I'm fairly certain it will work and I will get back to this post when I test it in a few hours.

I'm curious if this question has been answered or if the problem has been solved and I just simply don't have the google skills to find it.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Wirelessly With TP-Link TL-WN727N USB Adapter?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having some issues getting connected with a TP-Link TL-Wn727N wireless USB adapter. I have no way to connect hard wired with the computer, but I have another working notebook to possibly download files. However, the second notebook is a Mac, so most of the posts I've found are not filling in all of the answers. Also forgot to note, I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I followed along with this and managed to get the card to find the wireless connection. However, the connection would never connect. After entering the security password the wireless icon would do it's thing and then pop up asking to ok the password again. I double, triple checked the password and it is correct. I found elsewhere that I should probably install wicd. This is where I've run into problems with finding the way to get files that I can download on the Mac and then installed on the Ubuntu computer. I managed to find this forum thread and downloaded this file I transferred the file from the Mac to the Ubuntu with a flash drive and tried to install. First the install said that Network Manager needed to be removed, so I removed it. Next it says "Dependency is not satisfiable: python-urwid." I'm not sure how to go about getting this dependency as it is not showing up in the package manager.

Networking :: Connecting Wirelessly With Newly Installed Fedora 14?

Jan 6, 2011

I finally got the driver to be installed and to be associated with the network adapter. Now the issue is the wireless network adapter won't connect to my wireless network. I am new to Linux, and am trying to get my Fedora 14 to work online, without needing to constantly be wired in (what's the point of having a laptop if you have to be stationary). Anyways my network has WPA2 personal security with a TKIP + AES encryption (I switched it from solely AES because I thought that might have been the issue).I've heard a lot of good things about Linux, but so far its been frustrating trying to get this wireless connection working. I am currently taking a course on Linux, and I am using the opportunity to learn about and maybe switch over to a Linux OS which I have heard so much good stuff about in my previous courses.

General :: Connecting To The Internet Both Wirelessly And With An Ethernet Cord Into The Router

Oct 11, 2010

I just installed Fedora Core on my Dell Inpsiron B130 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to the internet both wirelessly and with an ethernet cord into the router. When trying to configure my network, I dont recognize any of the ethernet adapters in the drop down list. I have been told that my wireless card is Linux compatible (dell y8029 dell wireless 1370 802.11/a/b/g mini pci). My ethernet card is a B130 Broadcom Ethernet Driver which isnt in the drop down menu either.

I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"

Ubuntu Networking :: Wirelessly Connecting Desktop With A Linksys Wireless Range Expander?

Sep 30, 2010

After spending several months coming up with ideas (and ultimately failing), I have found the easiest and simplest way to connect your Ubuntu desktop (or laptop w/o a wireless adapter/card) to the Internet using only a Linksys Wireless Range Expander and an Ethernet cord.

YOU WILL NEED:
Linksys Wireless Range Expander (WRE54G)
Ethernet cable

Linksys wireless router (that is providing your home/office with wireless Internet) The WRE54G can be purchased online through various websites, including eBay. They run anywhere between $10 and $40, but it's going to be cheaper than a USB Wireless Adapter (and no software needs to be installed, making it universal for most Linux distros).

Networking :: Set Up A Laptop As A Router To Connect Wirelessly To ADSL Router?

Nov 6, 2009

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).

I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.

I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:

net.ipv4.ip_forward=1

Then I tried this on the laptop:

sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT

This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.

But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

General :: Ubuntu - Connecting Monitor To Laptop

Is there any way, how to make connecting monitor to my laptop as easy as it is e.g. in Windows? Just plug-n-play? I've just installed last version of Ubuntu and then connect monitor. After connecting monitor nothing happened (my laptop LCD doesn't get blinked and it doesn't try to use the monitor as a second one). So I went to Monitors configuration, where I saw "Mirror screens". I've unchecked "Same image in all monitors" and applied, also nothing happened. The monitor is still just black. Is there any application which would make this stuff easier for me?
