Networking :: Set Up A Laptop As A Router To Connect Wirelessly To ADSL Router?

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.
Because of the configuration of my house, I need two routers.I have a DLink ADSL router as my main router and the Belkin N1 as my repeater.I have set up the IP address in the Belkin to be 10.1.1.10 - my DLink is 10.1.1.1. I have disable the dhcp in the Belkin and set the DNS as ISP provided. [URL]..I have set the channel to 11 and in the Ubuntu Network Manger I have set the IPV4 to Link Local Only. I can see the Belkin and connect with my PC.but it will not take me through to the internet.
I am trying to install ubuntu on an HP Pavillion dv7 laptop. The installation worked just fine. However, I cannot connect to our Linksys router wirelessly.
I'm a beginner in Ubuntu, I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. Currently using a Dlink GLB-802c router and using a ADSL connection. I try to connect to the Internet but it is unsuccessful. Ubuntu is not indicating my router when I connect to the PC.

I have 2 pcs at home. I dont have a switch so I can connect only one PC at a time to my adsl router/modem for internet access. In the past I had successfully connected the two PCs (NIC to NIC) to each other using the same ethernet cable which was supplied with my dlink adsl modem.
Recently the motherboard of on of my PC went bad so I replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I connect the two using the same Ethernet cable they won't connect. The lights on the Ethernet port won't light up. I can still connect both of them to the adsl router (NIC to Router) (one at a time).
I am not able to get wireless internet working on Ubuntu 10.04. I have a Wireless PCI card, Netgear WG311v2.I can't connect to the router, even though I downloaded the Windows drivers using Ndiswrapper.
After reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 LTS didn't recognize my ADSL router Billion 400 G.The Ethernet 1 led is off after booting.Search on web for help on this but no good results.You good people now are my last resort.I tried boot in live CD and result is the some.Check with sudo lshw.
I am running openSUSE 11.2 and just recently my network has been down. I'm using Gnome, but using Yast to configure my network (I'm usually forced to use wireless as I travel a lot on my laptop). Usually, when I'm connected to a wireless network, it will show up as so in the Gnome start menu, but recently, it will only say Wired there, even though I have nothing connected to my ethernet jack. I can connect wirelessly to a home router, but cannot use the wireless in any other way. I have tried manually disabling the ethernet connection to no avail. Unfortunately I am limited in my linux knowledge, so I am kinda stuck here.
I've not changed my configuration, but after temporarily unplugging my laptop from the router, I can no longer persuade it to connect again.Have restarted it repeatedly, but to no avail.A similar problem has been occurring with my Huawei 3G Dongle which has suddenly started behaving.Are there any troubleshooting guides for the Network Manager's wired connections? My router/adsl modem is not connected to a power supply so when power goes and comes the network will do a re-boot. Now the problem is my OpenSUSE network won't come back on! I set the static ip as Autoeth0 to eth0 however when network updates I losse eth0. Why is this happening? Why doesn't the PC simply re-connect? Can I do it via command line?

Desktop Server Linux OEL 5 (not wireless) cable connected to the WRT54G router port. (I can go to the Internet with this server, but not able to communicate other computers on the WRT54G Wireless Network. Even though, the Linux Server is connected to the WRT54G router port.) So, here we go: I have a headless Debian box and i want to set it up as a small office router/gateway. On the box i installed a regular NIC and a Viking Traverse ADSL+ Card which gets recognised by the OS as an 8139 ethernet card and has an embedded ADSL+ modem. The modem is accesible through the PHY interface once it gets assigned an IP. Having said that here is the actual setup:

What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?
I'm using a cross-over ethernet cable to connect a Desktop Windows 7 box, and a laptop running on SUSE 11.2. I want Windows to connect to the internet via the laptop's wireless interface.
I use a wired Dlink Adsl Router GLB502T with its inbuilt dialer configured. Problem is it will not connect while computer is running.When I try to ping the local ip of the modem this is what I get "ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted" and "/etc/init.d/networking restart" has no effect either.I need to restart my computer every time i want to connect to the Internet.I switch on the modem when the grub bootloader appears and the modem connects without any problem.This problem appeared when i installed Ubuntu 9.04.There was no problem with Ubuntu 8.04.

My son lost his USB Wireless stick for his Computer. I had thought I heard that if you had a second wireless router, you could use it somehow to detect the wireless router you have already set up in your home (like using a wireless card)? Is this what Ad-Hoc is? Either way, can this be done and if so how? I use a WRT54Gx2 Lynksys router and have a TRENDNET TEW-432BRP wireless router and also a spare D-link DI-514. I use ubuntu 10.04, and also wanted to know if I connected one of the router to his on the LAn port could he connect msaybe through an Ad-Hoc on my local computer here? He uses XP on his. I'm a newbie to linux and networking in general.
I recently bought a HP laptop which is showing some issues. To make it precise:
1. I can connect to ethernet & wireless when i am at my university, which are quite good connections.
2. At my home, i share the internet with another guy. The connection is not very stable, in the sense that, sometimes the download speed is 1MiB/s, and sometime 250 KiB/s. I have a old laptop which can connect to it without any problem.
3. My new laptop can connect to it when the connection is better with download seed ~1MiB/s, but could not connect to it when the download speed goes down.
4. "could not connect" means even ping to router takes long time with 90% packet loss. But I can always get connection and ip address from dhcp although i can not ping thereafter. This is true for wired & wireless connection both. Is that a router issue? but then, why can i connect through the other laptop.
I am using ubuntu lucid and am able to connect to my ThomsonTG585 wireless router, but my mother who uses win7 is unable to connect, except by Ethernet cable, which is not convenient, how can I get her connected. When I try to connect, It it says "limited connectivity" and does not let her utilize the internet. My brother is dual booting ubuntu karmic and winXP and is able to connect on both os's. I am absolutely sure I am entering the correct pass-phrase and ssid.
i have a problem with my new router and ubuntu 10.10. The problem is that my internet connection show me that my laptop had connect to internet but my browser can't open a website ( this problem is the same with my netbook ) to fix it always must turn it off and after on either it never makes.
Linux and I have trying to get my Fedora 15 (x86 64bit) on my laptop to print to an Epson Stylus NX515 printer/scanner. I have the printer connected to a router through a wireless connection. I have other computers that are on the network that are Windows based and they of course are printing/Scanning just fine. The printer is located in a different room. I have been searching for a solution but non that explains how to install a printer driver for one that is connected to a router wirelessly.
I just installed Fedora Core on my Dell Inpsiron B130 laptop and I am having trouble connecting to the internet both wirelessly and with an ethernet cord into the router. When trying to configure my network, I dont recognize any of the ethernet adapters in the drop down list. I have been told that my wireless card is Linux compatible (dell y8029 dell wireless 1370 802.11/a/b/g mini pci). My ethernet card is a B130 Broadcom Ethernet Driver which isnt in the drop down menu either.
I read that I need to download an ndiswrapper but I dont know where to find this download AND even if I could download it to a zipdribe, I have trouble opening a USB flash in Linux becuase its not a "valid block device". This is after the command "mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbflash"
I don't know how to get the wireless router to connect to the other wireless router so I can use internet on my computer. How do I achieve this wireless connection?
