Software :: Access Pictures Without First Transferring Manually To Local Drive?
Jan 1, 2010
I've recently decided to take control of my media files and digiKam has helped me a lot, but I've run into a big problem. I have a few pictures on my local drives, but the bulk of my media resides on a samba share on the network. I want to use digiKam on my laptop to manage and edit these files, but I can't find a way to get digiKam to see the network folder, located here:
Code:
smb://192.168.0.253/Server Is there a way to access the pictures without first transferring them manually to a local drive? digiKam says it is capable of loading pictures over a network, but I haven't been able to make it work.

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

The HDD in my HTPC is giving off a really annoying grinding sound, and we all know what that means.Luckily, my movies, songs, games, etc. are stored on a brand new 400 Gig external drive- the install is all that's on the failing one. I've got about a half dozen IDE drives big enough for a base install, and at least half of those *aren't* failing, I just don't know what to do. Do I just create the ext and swap partitions then copy/paste the file system, or what?

Method of automatic backup from my hard drive to a usb drive when plugged in.
Basically I'll be constantly putting files in /home/downloads and I want it so when I plug in a NTFS usb drive it will automatically Cut(not copy) all the contents of that folder including other folders to my usb drive. Is there any well known programs that can do this?
I would prefer something that is in the repositories that is easily configurable via command line rather than some complicated script.

I have a Casio Exilim EX-Z9 and am running Ubuntu 10.10. When I plug the camera into the USB port it appears in the list of storage devices as "2.0 GB Filesystem" but when I try to access it I get an error message saying:
"Unable to Mount 2.0 GB Filesystem Error Creating Moint Point: No such file or directory" I downloaded digiKam but that didn't work either. For a start, it recognised the camera as a USB storage device and then when I tried to access it I came up with this message: "Cannot access the storage device. org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure: Cannot obtain lock on /media/.hal-mtab"

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.

Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:
Code:
blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.
I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

I was trying to figure out how to get my network drive to mount as a local drive on my computer. This was back on 9.10. Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing. Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch. At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder. For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens. The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

I added a second internal hard drive to my system. It took a while to figure out how to mount it, and I thought all my problems were over.I want to use this for storage for Transmission since this would keep all the files independent of my other hard drive. One thing that I noticed is that when I restart my computer it doesn't automatically mount the drive (Transmission gives me an error message saying it's not able to access the drive). So I remounted it, and noticed that it restarts all my torrents. One thing that I noticed is that Transmission keeps the .torrent files in /tmp and IIRC there is an option to move them wherever you want to in Deluge (I don't know if this will help anything or not).I don't like Deluge, but if it's somehow easier.
So how can I retain my settings prior to restarting and make this permanent?I do like to turn my computer off from time to time, and I am quad booting with other distros that I like testing out.

I would like to boot Ubuntu 8.04 i386 from my USB flash drive. [URL] I took following steps:
1) made sure that usb_storage.ko kernel module is loaded
Code:
root@martin-desktop:~# lsmod | grep -i storage
usb_storage 39585 1
root@martin-desktop:~#
2) inserted USB flash drive
Code:
root@martin-desktop:~# tail -n0 -f /var/log/messages

When I set "USB flash drive" as a first bootable device in BIOS, I get SYSLINUX "boot:" prompt and it loads both "vmlinuz" and "initrd.gz", but finally I end up in BusyBox prompt and following message:
Quote:
"Check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev ALERT! does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
Last boot message which I see is "Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0".what might cause such behavior? Did I miss anything while preparing USB flash drive?

I had installed this drive as a slave drive yesterday, and it had worked perfectly, mounted good, etc., etc.
Today, I fire up ol' trusty, and my slave drive doesn't show in either "Places," "System Monitor," or "Disk Usage Analyzer." It does, however, show up in BIOS and "Gparted Partition Editor." A mounting option isn't present in "Places" as it was yesterday.
If I need to manually mount it or whatever, would someone please list the steps I need to take to get my HD back?
My main harddrive is a Western Digital 160 Gb IDE and is listed as /dev/sda. My slave is a Seagate 80 Gb SATA and is listed as /dev/sdb

I know this has been covered in many threads before, but I'm stuck not finding my exact situation or an answer. I'm a newbie using a Debian Linux machine as the client and Windows XP machine as the server. I have successfully mounted the XP Network drive on the Linux machine using commands from the root terminal:
mount -t smbfs -o username="Windows Username",password=windowspassword //XPcomputername/folder /mountpoint/
However when I put the command in the ect/fstab file as suggested in several posts, I don't get any result on boot up. I.e. I can't get the network drive to mount on start up, I always have to manually mount it from the root terminal.

I can access the small 80GB HDD via ssh from another computer and delete files, but when I try to access the 500GB drive via ssh it says access denied. does somebody know how dnsmasq / iptables need to be configured such that requests to my public IP from lan are correctly NAT'ed to the host that handles them? Currently my routing device treats them like "oh, these are anyway for me, gnam gnam" which actually doesn't work.Unfortunatly setting up NAT rules that redirect requests from my lan correctly as they are redirected from wan is an option I would like to use only if there is no other possibility.I would like some kind of solution that treats packets that are sent to my public IP as normal packets that are not looped back before they even get out. So they would need to be at least sent to the wan gateway where they are directed back where my firewall can successfully treat them like all other public requests.

Is there a way to do this - perhaps through ssh?
