Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?
Nov 16, 2010
Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:
Code:
blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.

I've been dual-booting win7 and ubuntu on my comp for a while, but didn't bother updating grub. I just updated to grub 2, but it wouldn't let me boot and said my hard drive was missing, also giving me a grub safety command line.

The HDD in my HTPC is giving off a really annoying grinding sound, and we all know what that means.Luckily, my movies, songs, games, etc. are stored on a brand new 400 Gig external drive- the install is all that's on the failing one. I've got about a half dozen IDE drives big enough for a base install, and at least half of those *aren't* failing, I just don't know what to do. Do I just create the ext and swap partitions then copy/paste the file system, or what?

I bought a new hard drive. I thought it would be clever and SAFE to install Ubuntu on the Hard Drive so that would not interfere with the internal hard drive on my laptop. It worked fine until I disconnected the hard drive. I got the "Grub Error 21" when I installed. I know how to get around it, unfortunately, I have to lug around this hard drive whenever my computer sleeps or restarts. I would like to be able to restart and boot into Windows without my hard drive connected. Is this possible?

My intention is to use the external HDD as a backup to up running in case my 3 year old desktop HDD fails. I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.

I bought a new hard drive recently and I managed to drop it. Put it into the computer, used it for a day, all went fine. Now today, it has started giving out an intermittent, clearly audible rattle that will last for a few seconds at most; there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern to it, sometimes the drive keeps quiet for an hour, then it does it twice within a minute or five. FWIW, the drive was still in its plastic box when it hit the floor so that must have softened the blow. There is no visible damage to the drive although the plastic box was dented on one corner. Still, what do you reckon are the odds that it will die any time soon?

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below
Code:
I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below
Code:

I was transferring some files from my external USB hard drive onto my laptop (running 64bit Karmic), and my laptop froze up for whatever reason.Everything on the screen stopped and the Scroll Lock and Caps Lock LEDs began flashing. Not knowing anything else to do, I hard booted off with the power switch. At this point, I was concerned if anything on either hard rive would be damagedI booted my laptop back up, and all seemed well until I trued to open my Documents folder. For some reason, Ubuntu will no longer open any folders at allI can't click on ComputerDocuments, Music, etc. When I do, a tab opens in the taskbar that says Opening folder. It stays on screen for about 20 seconds, and then goes away and the folder never opens. The weird part is if I open gEdit and try to load a file, I can see and get to everything.

I'm getting a funny error after trying to add a new internal hard drive to my computer. After adding the new drive to the "Slave" slot GRUB will not load properly and gives me the following error Grub Loading, Please Wait Error 17 I've checked in my BIOS and the "Master" drive is still the one where grub is loaded. When I unplug the new drive the problem disappears and I can load Grub normally. I've searched the threads, but couldn't find a similar problem, or a problem that could be applied to mine. I've also tried loading the live CD, but my internal CD drive is broken, and the external one I have doesn't seem to recognized during boot time.

I've been running Debian Lenny kernel 2.6.26 w/ desktop kde3.5 on my laptop for a while, and im going to take a trip in which i will be unable to take wmy laptop with me. However, where i am going contains computers and i figured if i could install debian onto my external harddrive, i could just boot onto the other computers. I install it using the debianlenny-i386 dvd image. However whenever I try to boot it from a computer. Grub returns
Code:
Grub Loading...
Error 21
and then the blinkng cursor. On one site i found something saying "you may need to activat the drive" and some command-line instructions on how to do it. However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.
Thank you in advance for the help!!!
btw I'm installing on a western digital 500gb "passport" external hard drive with ext3 and swap partitions.

I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.

So I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.
Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.
I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.
I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.

I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.
I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?

I have posted in regards to fixing some problems I had after running recoverjpeg, and most are fixed. However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.

I got a problem with the motherboard of my computer and now I need to get some files out from the hard drive (an ext3 partition). I can access the files from another computer but because of the permissions of my user it doesn't let me copy the files over to another drive.
my computer was running Kubuntu 8.10 with a Vista dualboot. I also tried attaching the hard drive to another laptop, but because of the video drivers the display doesn't function properly.

A section of the hard drive on my laptop is damaged but the laptop has genearlly been running fine as it seems to very rarely touch that section (once every few months). However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.

I want to make my own raid array, that is essentially identical to one of those commercially available external raid drives. The only thing is, I want to do this by using a dedicated computer as the drive, and connecting it to another computer to use as the server. Is there some way to do this. Maybe make a sata port on the raid computer appear lixe a hard drive to the server. Or use a usb 'crossover' cable to connect the 2.Is this even possible, or should I just use the raid computer as the file server too?

What I want to do is pull data from any of the hard drives attached to my Linux box from my Windows machine. I have been moving small amounts of data from the drives to my OS drive and those parts share easily, but I want to move away from that method to move large amounts of data at the same time.I have tried using Samba as it is used for file sharing between systems and that I have to give my Windows box permission through Samba.
Trick is, I'm not sure where to start, though I have an idea and wanted to know if this is the right track before I start editing my file system.

I have a dell inspiron 9300. I have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.on't have the root password.Something I'd like to do would be to have two separate ubuntu's on my computer. I'd like to keep this one just as it is but also have another ubuntu-same version- that I can boot up into, and have it default booting up into the old one. How exactly do I do this? I know very little about computers. I barely mastered registration for this site, and copy/paste is a rather new skill for me.
