OpenSUSE Install :: Access Windows Vista Files (documents And Pictures)

Jul 8, 2010

I am looking a way to access my windows vista files (documents and pictures) in opensuse. I have a problem my Vista doesnt load anymore and I really need to recover some files from it before formatting.

I know very very veeeery little about linux. I installed few month ago but then didnt have time to really work on it. I checked on google but it's more confusing.

I have three partition. One is for Vista home edition 64 bit, the other one opensuse 11.1 and a third one for dell stuff (not sure what is it exactly )

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting 10.04 With Windows 7 - Transfer Files Like Music - Documents - Pictures

Jun 20, 2010

I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Unable To Access Music, Documents, Pictures, Etc. After Mounting Macintosh HD?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.

I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

OpenSUSE Install :: Access Files From Windows From An Ext4 Disk?

Feb 5, 2010

I am dual booting OpenSUSE and Windows 7 Pro x64. Each OS is installed on a separate 1Tb hard drive. One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

I assumed it would let me dual boot just like ubuntu let me do but when I booted. It only gave me two options Desktop -- OpenSUSE 11.3 and failsafe -- opensuse 11.3. Those are also the two options it gives me when I look at the boot loader settings. Did I delete my Windows parition or did I just forget to specify to allow for a dual boot and how can i fix this so I can dual boot

Ubuntu :: Copy All The Pictures From Various Folders In Documents To A Single Folder

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Files From Hdd Missing \ Files That Were Located On C(vista) Cant Access Any Of The E Ones?

Mar 7, 2011

I changed to wubi last night, i decided to go that way cause i was informed it was a safe way to try giving it a try for linux and ubuntu without any special effort needed to be payed and easily deleted if i am not pleased.Thankfully i am pretty satisfied with the results, i pretty much dealt with most of the issues i have faced so far successfully and i am running it ok beside one important thing.See i am using my laptop, which has a hdd of 250GB.On my Vista there are 2 different hdd C+E by default, they separated my hdd.So while i have windows on C and E is pretty much used for my additional data(see movies, music etc) when i installed wubi i installed it on E, thought it would be better and it had more space.

Now though, while i can access threw ubuntu all my files that were located on C(vista) i cant access any of the E ones, and search file dont helps either.The "vista hdd" as ubuntu describes it, its a 250 gb disk on computer, which means it should contain both of the vista disks.But sadly thats not the case.i cant seem to be able to find them anywhere.

I'm not very unix savy so I've been using Ubuntu tweak PersonalDefault Folder Locations setting and browsing to my Windows folders. But it doesn't work.I have managed to make a desktop 'short cut' and that works but I'd rather set the system wide default document folders.

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashed: Unable To Display Some Documents - Unrecoverable Files

Jul 22, 2010

the other day my Dell laptop completely crashed, rebooted, got a DST error, tried to run a dskchk off the Windows Boot CD, failed due to "unrecoverable files". Then booted off Ubuntu to salvage my stuff, which seems to work fine, and I can even see my HD - "120 Gb Drive" or whatever it says. When I open it, I see 2 folders: windows, Epson, and 2 random files.

Here's the thing. It says 108/120 gigs are taken, which is just how I left my HD with all my stuff on it that I am trying to recover. Yet my personal and important documents (pictures, videos, documents and even music) are NOWHERE to be found and searches bring up nothing. yet it says the disk space is taken...I am at a total loss.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Vista Cannot Access Smbshare

Mar 30, 2010

I am having an issue setting up (or rather accessing) a samba share, I have installed samba and created a share a follows:

Quote:

[smbshare]
comment = 1TB Drive Share
path = /media/1TB EXT eSATA/SMBshare
browsable = yes
read only = no

I then added a user to the server using:

Quote:

sudo useradd smbuser --shell /bin/false

and then added this to the smbuser list with:

Quote:

sudo smbpasswd -a smbuser

So everything seems to work fine here, I can see the server from my windows vista laptop, open the server and see the shared folder, but when I try to open the folder I enter username 'smbuser' and password 'xxxxxx' and get a windows error saying "not accessible you might not have permission to use this service"I have even tried to set this up as a public share with full guest privileges and get the same error.

Networking :: Get Ubuntu Mini To Access The Files On Vista Machines?

May 5, 2009

My new HP mini running Ubuntu sees my HP notebook running Vista,my Compaq desktop running Vista, and my HP desktop running XP as computers belonging to my workgroup, but I can only access my files on the XP machine. The mini and the notebook are wireless and the desktops connect to the router by cable.

All of the computers connect through the router to the DSL modem, and each of them connect to the HP wireless printer. None of the other computers see my mini as belonging to my workgroup, specifically including my XP computer. Figure that it is likely normal that I cannot with my mini open files that I find on my XP, but have to copy and paste them to my mini or one of the flash drives I use with it before I can open them.

I understand I have described a "well known problem" caused by a non standard sequence in Vista, that can be obviated by a fix to the login sequence that can be made to the linux code in my mini so that it will recognize and perform the login (user name and password) that is required when a Vista machine is encountered.

But I'm in over my head, unable to even find the command line on my mini.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting With Windows Vista - Access Denied

Aug 10, 2010

I'm installing Ubuntu 10.04 for a friend, dual booting it with windows vista. The installation was going just fine up until the 4th step- partitioning the drives. After designating space for vista and ubuntu and running it, it popped up the window and displayed 0%... for the next hour. After looking around on ubuntu forums for a solution, I tried manually partitioning the drives in vista. Vista wouldn't let me, saying that access was denied. I tried using gparted next, which had an error with it as well. Does anyone know what i can do to work around this?
