Ubuntu / Apple :: Unable To Access Music, Documents, Pictures, Etc. After Mounting Macintosh HD?

Jan 22, 2010

I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 with Ubuntu 9.10 installed using rEFIt. When I mount the Macintosh HD in Ubuntu, I am unable to access any of the folders under Users, except Public. I tried changing the permissions in OSX, setting "Read and Write" for "Everyone" on a couple of folders, and, when I log back into Ubuntu, I can see that those are the permissions for the folder, but Ubuntu still tells me that I do not have permission to access the folder. I've tried setting the folder to share, thinking that this must be the reason that I can access Public with no problems, but it didn't work.

I've browsed the internet extensively, and the only thread I could find related to the issue was by someone who had the exact same problem as me (I don't know if they had the same macbook though), and it was never solved (the only advice given was to either change the Ubuntu user number, or change the permissions of the folder).

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting 10.04 With Windows 7 - Transfer Files Like Music - Documents - Pictures

Jun 20, 2010

I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.

Ubuntu :: Copy All The Pictures From Various Folders In Documents To A Single Folder

Dec 8, 2010

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. I want to copy all the pictures from various folders in my Documents to a single folder. So in Nautilus, I clicked on Places > Search for Files. Then chose the Documents folder and typed *.jpg in the search criteria. It found all of my pictures just fine. However it would not let me copy and paste them into a folder I put on my desktop. Copy is not on the "right" click menu and Ctrl C did not work for the highlighted search results. This is so simple in Windows but it does not seem to work in Ubuntu.

Fedora :: Unable To Stream Music From F12 Box And Access It Via Itunes 9 On Mac OS?

Jan 6, 2010

I had mt-daapd working fine and was able to stream music from my Fedora 12 box and access it via Itunes 9 on Mac OS X until I edited my /etc/fstab file, so that the Windows vista partition (where my mp3 files reside) would auto map so I would not have to authenticate to map the NTFS drive each time I logged in, the NTFS mount directory is set to /mnt/windows and updated this in /etc/mt-daapd.conf now when I access the Daap share using Itunes 9 via Mac OS X the list of songs loads and I can select the song but it never plays and when I connect to the Daap share using Banshee an X appears next to the song.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Unable To Access Firewire Drive

Oct 24, 2010

I just finished installing Lucid Lynx on an iMac7,1. So far, everything looks good, except for the fact that I am unable to access my external firewire drive. I know that outside of the Mac world, firewire isn't seen very often, but I was under the impression that it was supported. It doesn't show up in the /mnt directory of my new system, or my desktop. Then again, I am new to Ubuntu, and the filesystem looks a bit different from Mac and Debian, the two other *nix filesystems that I am the most familiar with. It shows up fine in Snow Leopard.

General :: Using Find Command To Search For All Pictures, Or All Music?

May 17, 2010

Trying to find a way to have the find command perform a search using multiple file extensions such as "find all pics" i.e. .jpg, .png, .gif, .raw etc. I would have thought something like the following would have worked, but apparently I'm doing something wrong:

sudo find / -type f -iname "*.jpg" "*.png" "*.gif" -printf

I'm guessing find simply doesn't support more than one "-name/-iname" at a time? Or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way? I realize most times there's several different ways to skin a cat when a task is requested in linux/unix.

Ubuntu :: Manually Restart The Avahi-daemon In Order For The Music Players Unable To 'see' The Music Server?

I use mt-daapd music server to stream music to a couple of network music players (which use UPnP protocols). Recently (last month or so) I have found that on restarting my ubuntu system I need to manually restart the avahi-daemon in order for the music players to be able to 'see' the music server. I think avahi-damon is running when ubuntu first starts up. The output of a ps aux shows:

I'd like to understand why I need to restart the avahi-daemon and either solve this or learn a way to automate restarting it on system boot up so I don't have to do it manually each time. My system is ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and the version of avahi-daemon is 0.6.25

I have entered a line into the /etc/fstab file that I believe mounts the partition properly, but it is giving root owner ship of the partition. Is there a better way of doing this? perhaps mounting the drive some where else and using a hard link? the line I have so far in my fstab is

/dev/sdb1 /home/me/Music ext4 defaults,user 0 2

But this is still sowing the drive on my desktop, it also replaces the the name of Music in my places with the fact that it is a drive of such a size.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 11.04 Mounting Windows Music From LAN On Startup

May 17, 2011

My problem is that in order to get Banshee to play my music thats in a Windows system on the LAN, I have to mount the volume first. This works fine if I navigate to the folder every time I startup Ubuntu and then play music through the library in banshee. However, I want to add a command to mount the volume on startup in the startup applications. I tried this in a terminal:

Code: sudo mount -a smb://home/p/My Music /home/username/Music/Music on Home This didn't mount anything. In fact, I couldn't even cd to the directory "smb://home/p/My Music". And yes, I did already make the directory "/home/username/Music/Music on Home". I'm thinking that my problem is really how do I write the address of a Windows network drive.
