I am having a windows 7 64 bit OS in my laptop....,and recently i have installed ubuntu 10.04 in one of the primary partitions.......,and totally there are 3 drives in my laptop now(excluding the one in which ubuntu is installed)
I am interested in accessing the local drives(i.e.,any of the local drives except the "C" drive)in the terminal of the ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.
When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.
I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives.When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions.Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am dual booting OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows 7 both 64bit on my PC. I've got VMware workstation installed on both. I've got few virtual machines which were all created in Windows VMware and they're all stored on a separate partition. I can access this partition and all other NTFS partition from Suse but with read-only permissions. That means I can't run any of these virtual machines from Suse VMware. Is there any possible way to make all these drives writeable from Suse? I'm really hoping someone would be able to help me. I've got a lot of googling and have even searched this forum but without any luck.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files.What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.
Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.
If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.
I am using Karmic Koala and not finding uniform behavior regarding internal hard drive mounts. I have placed commands in fstab to mount partitions at boot. One a separate hard drive and the other a separate partition on the boot drive that I set up during OS installation. After boot, GParted shows both of these partitions mounted on the right points (in my case, /dd and /opt). Both the mount points have rw permissions for all. But neither "ls -l" in the terminal nor nautilus shows the drives. They are evidently invisible.I searched the net for hours looking for an answer to this and couldn't find it. Hope someone knows why this is going on.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using XP pro for a long time and installed Ubuntu 9 2 days ago. Before installing Ubuntu what I did as follows:
1. Deleted all the Partitions using XP installation cd.
2. Created 4 partions like C,D,E,F without formatting any drive. All the 4 partitions have the RAW data.
3. Deleted the partition of C drive and got the unpartitioned space of my hard disk.
4. Installed Ubuntu in this unpartitioned space.
Now the ubuntu is working perfectly, but the issue is I can't access my those 3 (D,E and F)logical drives which are in RAW format. How to format those drives and get access of them. I do not want to install XP again.
Our computer is loaded with Ubuntu, and my wife and I have separate accounts, which is fine. I have a backup drive with data and music and, if I want to reinstall or back something up, I have to log in as each user to do so. That is OK security wise, but I want to do a complete reload and would prefer to be able to access her home folder from my account, back it up to the other drive, reinstall and then copy everything back so she can use her files.
Also, I have a couple of files in my home partition that she wants access to occassionally. I would like her to be able to access my home directory to get to those files. If I put them on the backup drive, she cannot open them as I have the permissions. We also run KMyMoney, and would like to be able to use the same file whichever user is logged in.
My Quanta Plus can not access files on my network shares.I have my network drives mounted in /etc/fstab and they work great with all programs EXCEPT Quanta Plus.When trying to open any file on a network drive I get the following error: The file <filename> could not be loaded, as it was not possible to read from it. Check if you have read access to this file.I can use any other editor, Screem, Bluefish, gedit, pico, etc and open, modify and save files on these same network drives. Something I just realized is that Quanta Plus is a KDE app. Could it be that there is some KDE networking component that I am missing? This does happen to be a fresh Ubuntu install on a new computer. I have Quanta Plus installed on my old computer and it works fine with these same network shares (same fstab file), but over the years I have installed many programs on it and perhaps it has a KDE networking piece that hasn't been installed on this new computer.

View 9 Replies View RelatedSo, it took me a few years to come back to Linux. Had used it MANY years ago, and have been meaning to revisit it for some time now and finally have. Tried a couple other OSs that were just, frankly, garbage. But, not Ubuntu! So far, I haven't had any of the issues I've seen posted here. I decided to use my worst system as a test environment - an old Jetta Jetbook 9450. Loaded up with no problems, most noted none of the "searching for drivers" issue that I ran into with other OSs! All that being said, I do have one question - how do I get the laptop to join my network so that I can view my shared drives? In Windows, it's simply change WORKGROUP to my network name. Been flipping through the options, and I'm sure I may have overlooked it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just created a 2nd user on my computer. I've got the hard drive that ubuntu runs on, and then a 2tb drive for media. If the 2tb is mounted on my desktop, it won't show up on his desktop even if I'm logged out. It won't show up on his unless I unmount on mine.
If I'm logged out I'm obviously not using it. So why doesn't it show up? He has all privileges. Is there a way to make this work without having to unmount?
I'm running karmic btw. If you need computer info let me know what to type into the terminal and whatnot and I'll paste it all here!
I have Ubuntu 10.04 set up on my acer revo, this is connected to a wireless router via ethernet. Next door, is a pc that is running windows XP, and an original XBOX running XBMC. Those are connected via a crossover cable. The XP machine connects to the web wirelessly using my router, and the connections are bridged for XBMC's TV show scrappers. The idea is we use the revo for downloading as it consumes a relatively small amount of electricity. I have two external 1tb drives connected to the revo with Tv shows and movies, I would set up a network share so the XP machine could see them, and the xbox would be able to share the videos present.
I have installed samba, right clicked the drives in question and clicked the sharing options. I have ticked to allow guest access, and write access. This worked! I the shared the /home directory on the revos harddrive using exactly the same method. This worked. However I was no longer able to access the External drives. The UID has remained the same. I then tried unsharing /home, still no joy. Tried resharing /home Home now works, but still the externals don't.
After upgrade to 11.04 I have no way to access SMB shared drives using Nautilus. When I click on "Network / Windows Network" I have the message: "unable to mount location failed to retrieve list from server". Couple of remarks: This is a regression It's not only a "Windows" network - this label has to be renamed. The message does not help the average user at all - this is a geeky way of communicating with the end-user.

I know that virtual terminals 1-6 are all text terminals and 7 is the local X. How can I get my laptop to automatically create a virtual terminal on 12 that's dedicated to receiving the X display from the server?
I know how to get it over SSH/putty. And also how to stop the local and restart the X client on 7 to use the remote. But one of the beauties of Linux is the automation and multi-user environment. It's essentially going to act as a KVM with gui replacement over IP.
I am new both here and in Linux. As the subject says, I would like to learn how to copy a directory (not a file) from terminal with progress bar showing. The copy is local, i.e., not to another computer. My distro is CentOS 5.5. I know that if I do it with nautilus I would see the progress, but I want to learn how to do it from the terminal. I know that PV command can show a progress bar, but from what I saw, it works well for files, but not for directories (recursive).
Is it possible to use PV for directories? If yes, could you please show me the syntax? I also saw that some people mentioned that rsync can also show a progress bar, I tried to do it, but it didn't work out - perhaps I got the syntax wrong. If rsync can really be used to copy directories with progress bar, show me the syntax? Any other ideas on how to do it? I would like ideas that do not involve using any script, i.e., just something that I can do using the regular commands.
I have loaded the LiveCd successfully on 3 laptops, now I'm at my daughters new Toshiba & and getting a "Terminal" like screen asking for "Local Host" Login, never had this experience before.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently have VirtualBox installed on my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop. I have windows xp as a guest os and it has network shares on it. My question is, is there a way for another computer to access those network drives on the guest os in virtualbox? I don't want to search for hours on end on google, a simple no would be fine - however if it is possible let me know because when I am in windows on another computer that has windows as a host os it sees it in the windows network folder but it says "....network location not found" or something similar but it still shows a pc picture of the virtual os of the virtual box program running in ubuntu.

Is there a "correct" way to set up a shared folder between two local users using only EXT4 that will allow both users read & write access to everything in the folder?
Here's my scenario: My wife and I use the same computer. I want two separate user accounts (mine and hers), but I want ~/Music to point to the same location for both users so that I don't have to duplicate all of the files.
Too protect the innocent, I'll use Jack and Jill.
So say Jack downloads or rips an album:
"/home/jack/Music/Radiohead/Ok Computer"
I want Jill to be able to able to create a folder:
"/home/jill/Music/Radiohead/Hail To The Theif"
I know the basics of symlinks so I can get /home/jack/Music and /home/jill/Music to point to the same place. I also have Jack & Jill in the same group.
The problem I'm having with my test setup is when Jack creates "/home/jack/Radiohead", it is set up to where Jill can read, but not write. So she can play songs from Ok Computer, but if she wants to download Kid A, she has to go in and manually change the permissions on Radiohead first.
Also, while I might set up multiple directories this way, what I DON'T want is for Jack to be able to modify /home/jill/otherdir where otherdir is just a regular directory set up with default permissions.
Oh, and as an added bonus, it would be nice to set up another account (i.e. a "guest") with limited permissions that can read, but not write/modify.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a small Intranet system to run OpenERP or similar using browser-based clients. I have an Ubuntu machine running 10.04 desktop edition to act as a temporary/testing server until we set up a proper, dedicated machine with 10.04 server edition. I have installed Apache2 from the repos and it is up and running fine - locally. That is the problem, I can't access the server from other machines on the LAN. Ping works, btw. So I've been reading tutorials and howtos for the past week, but for the life of me, I can't find what I'm doing wrong. The standard Apache setup seems to be made to "just work", so although I've looked at the various configuration files mentioned in the tutorials, I haven't actually changed anything.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been researching this all day with no luck thus far. Basically I need to cutoff port 21/ftp access from IP addresses outside of my local network. My local IP range is something like 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.150 -- so anything outside of this range would automatically be blocked.
Any IP address outside of this range would be denied as I use SFTP for remote access, etc. from home, etc.
I've researched IP tables, tcp wrappers, etc. but am still unsure which would be best for what is probably a simple fix.
