Networking :: Mounting XP Network Drive On Machine Works Manually But Not On Boot Up?

I know this has been covered in many threads before, but I'm stuck not finding my exact situation or an answer. I'm a newbie using a Debian Linux machine as the client and Windows XP machine as the server. I have successfully mounted the XP Network drive on the Linux machine using commands from the root terminal:
mount -t smbfs -o username="Windows Username",password=windowspassword //XPcomputername/folder /mountpoint/
However when I put the command in the ect/fstab file as suggested in several posts, I don't get any result on boot up. I.e. I can't get the network drive to mount on start up, I always have to manually mount it from the root terminal.
I have an ubuntu kk laptop connected via wireless to my mixed network (xp, win7, other ubuntu), but i can not ping said machine or connect via ssh. Internet and smb-browsing ON this machine work, as does pinging FROM it. If this was a windows machine, I'd say a firewall is in the way, but since it's a vanilla karmic install, this should not be the case (or should it?).
I have a machine running Ubuntu 9.10 that has an external HD with shared folders music folder and media downloads folder). I have set up SAMBA on that machine.
On my laptop I am running a dual boot system with Windows Vista and using wubi install, Ubuntu 9.10.
In Windows, I am able to wirelessly connect to the shared folder and access the music folder and the media downloads folder on my Desktop Ubuntu machine. All is good.
When I boot in Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the shared folder under Places > Network I can negotiate to the MSHOME (the name of my work group). Once selected I get the error Failed to retrieve Shared List from server error message.

i want to know what are all possible ways of mounting network drive during boot up.
I want to mount a remote drive which contains some config file of several process,the drive should be mounted at boot up so that all the configuration files are available during boot up.
I added a second internal hard drive to my system.It took a while to figure out how to mount it, and I thought all my problems were over.I want to use this for storage for Transmission since this would keep all the files independent of my other hard drive.One thing that I noticed is that when I restart my computer it doesn't automatically mount the drive (Transmission gives me an error message saying it's not able to access the drive).So I remounted it, and noticed that it restarts all my torrents.One thing that I noticed is that Transmission keeps the .torrent files in /tmp and IIRC there is an option to move them wherever you want to in Deluge (I don't know if this will help anything or not).I don't like Deluge, but if it's somehow easier.
So how can I retain my settings prior to restarting and make this permanent?I do like to turn my computer off from time to time, and I am quad booting with other distros that I like testing out.
I have managed to get my networkdrive to mount on boot to a windoze share. however how can i get it to permently show the mounted icon on the users desktop?Its so simple a thing that there must be an easy way to do it.
When in XUBUNTU i click the picture of the 2 pcs indicating a network and choose "connect to hidden wireless network", put in the information.All this works nicely. When i reboot it's saved my config so i choose it to connect again but the "connect" button is disabled so i have to config it all over again and then it works. How do i get it to just connect to the network on login?
I have a Fedora machine that was installed with Linux LVM. I took the drive of that machine, connect it to disk enclosure, and connect to another Linux machine via USB connection. I can see that the drive /dev/sda is there:

I want to copy files from this drive. I try to mount it, but it didn't work. The /dev/sda1 is mounted fine, but it has only boot stuff.

I had some trouble with the netinst CD and I had to install lenny with the 6DVDs instead. My internet connection only works after I edit the interfaces and resolv.conf files manually. So my question is: can I do that from the netinst CD before it actually needs the connection to install everything? (otherwise I'll just need to use the DVDs.
I have done a fresh install of the OS and I am having wifi trouble. I am failing in connecting to an access point that Windows works fine with on the same machine. As far as I can tell it is connecting but not getting an IP address via DHCP. when running ifup it says its backgrounding getting an ip address.
I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 .I want to mount my home dir on another machine and log in to the remote machine with the same username and home dir. The problem is that the files on the mounted dir belong to userid 99 (nobody). For example:
I have an external Samba network storage drive that I mount using 'mount -t cifs -o username=aaa,password=aaa //myserver /mnt/mountlocation', but I'm finding it to be a pain to enter that whole command every time I turn on that drive and connect it to my computer via the network. I could put that command in a script and run a simple script like 'mntdrive' that would run that command for me, but is there a way to have the drive 'pre-mounted' so that if it's available on the network it's mounted?
If I put the mount command in one of the startup scripts or in fstab, would it be available at the mount location when the drive is connected if it wasn't connected when the computer was first turned on? Or is mounting the drive manually, even if by running a script that does it for me, something I'll have to do every time I turn on that drive? Any creative ways around this? Would make things easier if it is possible.
I'm setting up a server, and someone asked me (after I was done installing and formatting) whether the external hard disk attached to this server (with the /var partition) could also be mounted as a network drive for easy file transfer (i.e. drag-drop file transfer without ssh/scp or sftp). If someone has any ideas on how a pre-formatted (ext4) partition can be simultaneously made available as a network drive readable by a Windows machine.

It seems whenever i create a folder it creates the folder as untitled folder, but i can't change the folder name it just says "you don't have permission to rename item" but yet i created the folder and it is there. One thing i have noticed is that once i enter a folder it won't even let me move the folder.
I have ubuntu-8.04.1-server installed on virtual machine. It works perfect. Now, I made copy of this virtual machine. I started that copied machine and it works fine, except one thing: network does not work! I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).
I've got a semi-retired hdd (with a few bad sectors my disk utility tells me) formatted in ext4 that can be mounted onto the Desktop after boot provided root password is offered first. I thought it would be straight forward to mount it at boot with something in etc/fstab like :

So if I boot without a DVD or CD in my optical drive, then I attempt to put one it, it doesn't mount. I try mounting with the terminal and that fails as well. If I boot with the media in the optical drive, it works fine. (this problem occurs both on my desktop and laptop and I know the DVD and CD's work in both 9.10 and in windows, This error also occurs with Linux Mint and Sabayon leading me to believe this is a kernel issue).

Running 10.10 64bit Kernel 2.6.35-23 I am noticing what I think is a big hiccup in my boot process my drive is mounting at around the 4sec mark then my system pauses for roughly 13 seconds, you can even it see it on the screen a blinking cursor comes up the entire time. Then during the rest of the boot my drive will re-mount at least 4 more times. Then during use of my system there will be random re-mounts throughout the use. Here is the mounting message

I just noticed the pausing recently after an update but have been seeing this re-mounting since install. Are these normal? They dont seem like it to me, and if they are normal why such a long time on the initial mount and every re-mount takes 4-5 seconds. Let me know if I can provide any further info as well.
I just installed a second hard drive in my desktop. It shows in the BIOS.

It mounts automatically without problem once I am in Ubuntu and I can read/write to it.
My issue is that it won't mount at boot. I get past GRUB and a few seconds later receive an error message giving me an option 'S' to skip, or 'M' to manually mount.
What I noticed is that the logical name for the drive (used sudo lshw -C disk to display) seems to change at each boot.
It goes from /dev/sdb to /dev/sdf and vice versa.
So, I'm thinking this is the problem since I can only add it to /etc/fstab according to what I last saw.
I've run into a weird problem. Two of my linux machines (A and B, both running CentOS 5.5) are connected to the same wall ethernet socket via a hub. Bothf them are configured for static IPs. The trouble is that when machine B goes offline or hits a kernel panic, machine 1 goes offline too. I'm trying to join a wireles lab that I've setup with WEP encryption, but I'm unable to join. (I've tried on two different distros: ubuntu, and backtrack) same result.
This is a thread I've moved over from the install forum and is hopefully more focused. Sorry if I have violated some protocol. Problem I have a new machine build configured to dual-boot Windows 7 and OPENSUSE 11.4. Network performance in Windows is very good but network performance in OPENSUSE is very poor.
Does anyone havea good tutorial on Fedora's network scripts, how to edit them, in what order they are called, etc. What I want to do seems simple, but something in the bootup keeps changing it. Right now, I have an image of Fedora Core 7 created in a server with 2 Ethernet cards. I need to specify static IP addresses for each card. Thats simple, and I did that. Now, heres the tricky part, I need to be able to clone this image and place it onto other exact duplicates of the hardware, and have all of the settings stay the same.
What happens here, is that eth0 and eth1 are stored somewhere as devices, and upon boot on a different machine, the Fedora will mount new network cards(different MAC addresses) as eth1 and eth2. It then mvoes my ifcfg-eth0/1 to a backup, and creates two brand new network setting's files, which initialize to DHCP. This creates an issue, becuase these machines do not have monitors nor keyboards attached, nor is their a DHCP server, so its a pain when I swap the machine out, to have to go in with a keyboard/mouse/monitor and reconfigure the network settings before I can connect to it over the LAN.
So does anyone have any advice on how to do this? No matter what i tried, booting the image in a new PC caused Fedora to create two new devices and create brand new network settigns for them, both initialized to DHCP. Hell, I wouldn't care if it created brand new devices, if it would initialize them to static IP addresses that I am expecting.
I left the Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid installation cd I burned in the drive and rebooted the remote machine. Now I cant get it on VNC or ping it by name. But the IP it had before still replies to pings. When I check the DHCP database in Windows Server 2003, that IP's machine name is now "ubuntu", not the same as before. Does this sound like what a machine would do when that cd is left in the drive on a reboot?
I have used ubuntu in the past but had a lot of hardware issues with it and unfortunately moved back to windows (( BUT i have tried Ubuntu again and all seems to work great except wifi My wifi connection is sort of working because when i run SUDO IWLIST SCAN it does pull up all available networks. But in the network manager icon on the panel i left click but i see no networks and can't connect to anything. I WOULD LOVE TO keep Ubuntu and use it permanently but I must get wifi working or else this won't be possible.
