Software :: OpenOffice File Lost After Hibernation?
Oct 13, 2010
I'd been writing on a document for 2 hours (notes during a lecture) and then my computer told me it had 10min left I saved and it went into hibernation.
Then when I turned it on OO wanted to recover the file and I hit no as I had just saved it. And then I just got a blank file on 0bytes back. What happened?
The computer turned of after a while, before I could check /tmp, so that isn't a possibility.
So is the file lost forever or is it something I can do to get it back? It's really important...

I have recently installed OpenOffice.org and I can't find any executable file that actually starts up OpenOffice.
What is the equivalent to the old "soffice" executable which previously would start up OpenOffice?
I installed by executing the "setup" program after extracting the archive, I selected pretty much all of the items to be installed (at least the essential ones) and then let it install -- I didn't get to choose the path to install to, but I saw it stated that this would be installed under /opt.
I see two directories:
Neither of which contains any readily identifiable file that is the main program. What file should I execute?

I am wondering if anyone has figured out how to turn off the file locking in openoffice 3.2. I have been searching the net for solutions, trying out the fixes, and as of right now I have not been able to find a way to stop the creation of lock files.
I have tried editing both /usr/bin/soffice and /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice as described in the links (below), but this has not helped.
Here are the relevant links I have found
[URL]
According to this thread, the method I tried (setting SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0) was based on earlier versions of openoffice.org It no longer works because as of openoffice.org 3 the file locking is built into the program.

I am having problems installing the OOO_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz install package from openoffice.org. When I unpack the tar.gz file, I get another folder labeled OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502, which as a folder named DEBS that has number of .deb files. How do I install the mentioned file or files? I would like to use the download for installation, so I can get the updated version of OpenOffice, and not use the Ubuntu repository.

I wanted to compose a letter and include photos that are on my other (secondary) hd. When I navigate to the folder that the photo is in, OpenOffice suddenly crashes without warning. Then I have to recover my file. If I insert a photo from my main hd (the one with SuSE 11.2 on it) then there's no problem. Why does it crash when I try to go into my other hard drive? (It gets automatically mounted as /local when I boot into the system). I'm running Open SuSE 11.2 and OpenOffice 3.1.1.4 (from an .rpm)

Whenever, I successfully save a new document, the document's icon does not display in the KDE File Dialog until OpenOffice restarts. The document exists, because trying to do a "Save As" on it produces a dialog that states if one wants to overwrite the document. Also, trying to export a PDF twice has the same outcome.

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, presto, refresh-packagekit, remove-with-leaves
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

I need to know the header file used at 'c' to support openoffice writter at REDHAT4. I plan to write a c++ program for something like spellbee game. so instead of giving a txtfile which has a list of words as a source for the game I decided to use some header file. My assumptions are: Since the redhat4 is written through the "C" language and as well as the openoffice writter which is a supporting package at this os too might have the linker right. At openoffice writter we have the spellcheck feature which might had a source from where it checks the words whenever we type something at openoffice writer. So is it possible to use those header file or linkage source at my c++ spellbee game program instead off creating the list about few bunch of words.

I have an nfs share that mounts automatically when kde starts.
Code:
wendy@DellNB:~$ cat .kde/Autostart/mountNAS.sh
#!/bin/bash
mount ~/TestShare
#echo "NAS Mounted"
[code]...
Gimp works fine editing and saving photos from/to the nfs share. kWrite can do its thing and read/create files on the NAS. Files I create with vim are visible and editable under windows. OpenOffice however, when I try an open a file I get "file is locked by unknown user." I open as copy and try saving to the share with a different name... No Dice, error saving to share the file is created on the share but it is empty. I did some reading and found a post that said to comment a line from a file called soffice, which I cannot find.

I'm lost in the menu.lst file. I've edited it before, but now I can't get a handle on it. I've been trying different OS's over the year, lately Lubuntu. Now it's first in line (top of the order). I'd like (until 11.04 comes out next week) Ubuntu 10.10 to be first, with a 3 second delay.
Here's what I've got:
Code:
## should update-grub lock old automagic boot options
## e.g. lockold=false
## lockold=true
# lockold=false
[Code].....

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 with all updates, and I have a 1tb external hhd I had a 850gb true-crypt file on the external hhd, I had to reboot the computer. whenever I reboot the computer I always dismount the true-crypt drive, and when I logged back into my computer the true-crypt file on my external hhd is gone and it shows the extra free space as well,
I have not done any writing to the external hhd so I am hoping the file "should" be recoverable. I don't know any really easy and good data recovery tools for Ubutnu, It would be easier for me if their is a gui program, I can manage using the terminal.

At first I wanna say that I'm (quite) new to Linux and Fedora.Currently I have to use Fedora at school, but I'm running into some problems. To make things faster at school, I'm now trying to do the same thing at home using WMWare virtualbox. Our task is to setup 2 file-based disks using 4 image files and loop-devices. I can create and mount and use and do whatever with them, but after restart they are gone. Also all physical volumes and volume groups I created are gone. I used /etc/fstab to automount them at startup, but it doesnt seem to work.

I was working on a text file in open office writer last night, and this morning i tried to open it and a little thing popped up saying "ASCII Filter Options," prompting me for which character set, language and default fonts I wanted to use. (only after it asked if i wanted to recover the document, which i just did since it was asking me...) Now the document, which was very important, is a scrambled bunch of random characters! I cannot find the correct character set. Why is it prompting me for which character encoding I am using in the first place?

I was working on a report, when my computer crashed, flashing caps lock, completely frozen. Had to power it off. I had saved my work, shortly before it froze.
When I restarted, I tried opening the file, and it asked if I wanted to recover, I though why not and it recoved the file as purely #'s, except the very end which read.
Quote:
I regularly saved the file. Is there are way I could get a previous version of the file. Is there any way I can get the last saved version of the file, before openoffice tried to recover it.
I did a bit of work on it with koffice, any chance that that has a backup of it?
Any change any of the text can be recovered from the file.
I will upload the corrupt file with this post.
If anyway can restore it I would be soo greatful. I have tried googling but I can't find any methods which work.

I'm running Karmic 64-bit and Kate 3.3.90.I have been splitting up a very large (16,000 lines) text file by copy/pasting bits of it into smaller files. I had about 40 of these smaller files loaded into a session along with the large file. About 20 were from a previous day of editing and about 20 had been added (and saved) today.
I tried to save the file I currently had open and Kate crashed. I didn't think it was that big a deal until I reopened Kate and all of the files I had added today were gone!!I've looked in the folder and even the backup files that should have been there for files I'd saved more than once are not there.

I ran 11.1 for about a year and had only a few issues; but for some (stupid?) reason, decided to go to 11.2.
Now my hibernate does not work (it worked almost flawlessly on 11.1. Both from shutdown options and when closing the lid.
It seems to disconnect the ethernet, but then just reconnects and resumes normal operation.
This is a IBM T42 laptop. It also does not hibernate when I close the lid, which also worked fine on 11.1.
I can't leave this thing running all the time and I don't want to do a full shutdown every time I stop using it.
I've installed all the updates and upgrades.
