Ubuntu :: Rebooted And Lost A 850gb Truecrypt File?
Feb 9, 2011
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 with all updates, and I have a 1tb external hhd I had a 850gb true-crypt file on the external hhd, I had to reboot the computer. whenever I reboot the computer I always dismount the true-crypt drive, and when I logged back into my computer the true-crypt file on my external hhd is gone and it shows the extra free space as well,
I have not done any writing to the external hhd so I am hoping the file "should" be recoverable. I don't know any really easy and good data recovery tools for Ubutnu, It would be easier for me if their is a gui program, I can manage using the terminal.

When there is a power failure at my university for about 30 minute, my computer stays up because of a UPS, but the switch it is connected to via ethernet is reset. After this, my machine loses network connectivity until I manually select the network using nm-applet.
In System -> Preferences -> Network Connections, the network has the "Connect automatically" box checked.
However, in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, there is a line that says:
Code:
no-auto-default=00:30:48:b0:11:07,
and that is the MAC address of the ethernet card.
I'm running Ubuntu jaunty.

I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I used TrueCrypt to encrypt my drive, but in doing so I lost my Ubuntu boot option (as TrueCrypt boot takes up the MBR). So now I'm trying again, using TrueCrypt's option of multiple OS installed on same drive. At the moment, it won't let me do that since the Grub boot is on the same partition as the Win7 bootI. In a nutshell, I need to move Grub to another partition so that I can load from that boot option once I <esc> from the TrueCrypt boot. created a new partition for Grub, but don't know how to move it. My partitions as they stand now are:
[code]...
Does anyone know how I can move Grub to sda4? Or if I'm totally on the wrong track here?

I have been using truecrypt to mount a partition on my computer for a few months now. Yesterday I tried to access it and it failed, with the following error:" mount: you must specify the filesystem type "
When creating the partition, the filesystem type was set to ext2. Apart from yesterday, I have not accessed this partition for a number of days now, and have done nothing to the operating in system in the ways of changing settings and such for a good week.

Installed Truecrypt onto openSUSE 11.3 (KDE) and noticed that Truecrypt needed to be started as root.Modified visudo using YAST asusername ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecryptHowever, when copying files from my backup drive into the Truecrypt partition, there is an access problem (couldn't remember actual error message)In Konsole , updated visudo to username ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/truecrypt Copying is allowed and working fine.Question:1. What is the difference between the above two visudo setting?2. How to updated visudo to the second setting in YAST?3. How to change the editor for visudo in konsole using nano instead of vi?

A regular (non admin) user can create a Truecrypt 7.0a file, but it can't be mounted. The admin password is refused. If you try the regular user password, the error is that you are not on the sudo list.

This one being Ubuntu 9.10 (yes, I know I really should upgrade). I keep a number of confidential files in a TrueCrypt container which is a standalone file in my Documents folder. I'd like to delete some of these, but I want to do it as securely as I can, but I believe if I simply hit 'Delete' with the file selected it'll move the file to the Deleted Items folder. This, I assume, means that the file is taken out of the encrypted volume and stored unencrypted in the Deleted folder.
I've been reading a little about the Shred command, and there seems to be some question about whether it works effectively with a journalled file system; and since I have no idea whether I'm using a journalled file system, or how to find out, I'm treating Shred and other over-writing secure deletion tools as ineffective for now.
With this in mind, can anyone advise me how I can protect the file stored in the TrueCrypt volume, and delete it in place, without taking it out of the encrypted area? And, further to that, can anyone tell me whether in fact the file is actually secured while it's in the encrypted volume? For all I know, just opening the volume may result in copies being made somewhere (apart from RAM).

I'm lost in the menu.lst file. I've edited it before, but now I can't get a handle on it. I've been trying different OS's over the year, lately Lubuntu. Now it's first in line (top of the order). I'd like (until 11.04 comes out next week) Ubuntu 10.10 to be first, with a 3 second delay.
Here's what I've got:
Code:
## should update-grub lock old automagic boot options
## e.g. lockold=false
## lockold=true
# lockold=false

My daughter rebooted my computer while it was upgrading from Karmic to Lucid.
Now, of course, it won't reboot
"[ 0.683646]Kernel panic - not syncing: - VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)"
I do have a very current backup of /home
I don't have a backup of any configuration files (/etc/conf and so on?)
I think that I will have to overwrite the whole installation and then restore my /home directory, which will mean tweaking all my software installations again?
Is this my best plan of action?

I recently had to rebuild my computer with a new HDD and decided to load the new Ubuntu 10.04 which seems to work great. I was in the middle of downloading packages from the Ubuntu Software Center when the computer decided to reboot in the middle of downloading 6 packages. I went to the Synaptic Package Manager and it said to run "sudo dpkg --configure -a Here is what I got when I did that. What do I do next to fix and continue downloading the corrupted packages?

Let me reassume what I just did, because it will be easier for you to understand my problem. Today I played a bit with my Ubuntu (10.04, latest kernel) because I wanted to try xmms. I tried to install it manually, but since i couldn't make some libraries work I went for
[Code]....
I don't know where something went wrong, but when i rebooted my GUI disappeared. I'm stuck in login screen with nothing in there. I tried to do this [URL].... , but it doesn't work (if i'm not wrong those folders are inside /home, so after login I have to do [cd ..] and then using the rm command) I tried also pkill gnome-panel before coming back to desktop, but it doesn't work either. I tried to
Code: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop but it says I've got the latest one already installed.

I have a Natty installation that I just did yesterday on my personal PC. I am not home currently, but I can access my router (uses DD-WRT), and my Media Center Machine (Ubuntu 10.10) via SSH. For some reason, when I rebooted my router via SSH my personal PC (with Natty) did not renew an IP.Is there a way I can use magic packets or any other method from my other Ubuntu machine that I have remote access to, to force that other machine to renew it's IP?

Following is the specification of my user environment.
Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
Acer Aspire 5542
AMD Turion 2 X2 M500 (2.2 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache)
ATI Radeon HD 4200
4GB DDR2 Memory
500 GB HDD 5400 RPM
Sometimes, both on Gnome MPlayer and Movie Player, videos clips won't play. I use mainly MKV file format and quite often, AVI. I have also installed Ubuntu-Restricted-Extras.
The players will literally not play. When I scroll, it goes through the video clip as if I'm fast forwarding when paused, and then it would still be frozen.
I only use Gnome MPlayer and it's been working fine until like two weeks ago, and when it happens it's also the same for the Movie Player. The problem stays there until I reboot my laptop.
It's random but quite often and it's now doing my head in. It would be nice if any of you gents could give me a good solution without getting involved another player, because I really like Gnome MPlayer.

I have been running Meerkat in its various forms for the last few weeks. Wireless connection has not been a problem at all. I rebooted about 15 mins ago and on restarting the wireless connection will not connect. I checked to see what the problem was and clicked on Edit Connections and on the wireless tab.
My wireless is set to auto and its name is SKY 24550. I now have 2 entries in the same name and the one that is trying to connect is asking for wep 128 bit security details to be entered. My connection used WPA&WPA2 personal.
Ok, I thought I'll delete the new one (with the different security setting) and try again.
No good, it still asks for the same security details.
So I go back into edit connections and the new one is back again! I can't get rid of it, and while it's there the one that should connect isn't getting the chance.
Fortunately ethernet is working ok and I also have a Natty install which also connects ok through the old wireless connection, but not in Maverick.

On one of my linux machines (Ubuntu 10.04, 64bit) misbehaves. Whether I restart the "networking" service or go through ifdown/ifup sequence the link disappears. I can see the router light goes off as if the cable is disconnected. The network card light goes dark as well. Everything looks like the device gets powered off and I can't get it back on.
Reboot fixes the problem though it doesn't quite makes sense that one needs to reboot in order to simply update IP configuration (e.g. change /etc/network/interfaces config from DHCP to static IP).

I updated my kernel and rebooted my system. After a few minutes, my computer said that no hard drive operations were going on and the command line hadn't said anything else so I decided to reboot (i'm VERY impatient) and now when fedora boots,t hangs at a black command line like screen. I left it an hour to see if it would do anything - but nothing! Then i put in a few commands and it didn't respond to any of them

I have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. I have desktop effects disabled for power consumption purposes on my laptop. When I shutdown or reboot the system the air theme for the the taskbar is mostly black with some grey. If I enable desktop effects, apply, and then disable the effects the correct look of the theme is shown and the appearance is retained with effects disabled. Pictures below of theme after reboot and then theme after enabling and disabling desktop effects.

I'd been writing on a document for 2 hours (notes during a lecture) and then my computer told me it had 10min left I saved and it went into hibernation.
Then when I turned it on OO wanted to recover the file and I hit no as I had just saved it. And then I just got a blank file on 0bytes back. What happened?
The computer turned of after a while, before I could check /tmp, so that isn't a possibility.
So is the file lost forever or is it something I can do to get it back? It's really important...
