Ubuntu :: Open Office Writer - Lost File To Text Encoding?
Mar 3, 2011
I was working on a text file in open office writer last night, and this morning i tried to open it and a little thing popped up saying "ASCII Filter Options," prompting me for which character set, language and default fonts I wanted to use. (only after it asked if i wanted to recover the document, which i just did since it was asking me...) Now the document, which was very important, is a scrambled bunch of random characters! I cannot find the correct character set. Why is it prompting me for which character encoding I am using in the first place?

In Open Office Writer 3.2, is there any way that I can change the default "save as" "to" location from Documents folder to some other location (e.g., Desktop) in Lucid? I have looked thru everything I can find under tools>options, but I don't see anything that appears relevant.
Any command line deal I could do from terminal that might accomplish this?

I am using OO 3.1 on Karmic 9.10. When working with Open Office Writer and either graphics or charts, a couple of things happen. First of all, the page position moves around. For example, if I click on a graphic I have inserted or on a chart, the page on my screen may shift up or down by a half inch or so. If I click back out in a text area, the page moves back to where it was. This is very annoying. Has anyone else had a problem like this? I have tried turning off compiz completely but it doesn't fix it

1. Does Fedora 12 support ICU 4.4 Development Milestone 3 (ICU 4.3.3) with Unicode 5.2 full integration.(M3) ?
Microsoft's Uniscribe (usp10.dll) actually does not, neither in Windows XP nor in Windows 7. Will say is it possible to display complex scriptures like Devanagari, Avestan, Arabic etc. in Open Office Writer 3.1.1 via Fedora 12?
2. Is there any feature in Fedora 12 to build one's own Keyboard Layouts (like Microsoft's, Keyboard Layout Creator which isn't able to create Keyboard Layouts using Unicode Ranges bigger than U+ffff)?

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I've been running Ubuntu or a variant for about a year now and suddenly every now and then one or two of my documents (open office or pdfs) have no information and they won't open.

It has worked in the last week or so. Not sure when I ran it last. Now only root can run Open Office. The menu and a quick start Icon both give no response but su can call from the command line. I,user, can't. Seems there was a big OO update in the last several days, this might be the cause. I spoke too soon. Now su will not get it either. I tried su -l and su with no success. Also an Icon for OO quick start has gone away.

There are many plain text files which were encoded in variant charsets.
I want to convert them all to UTF-8, but before running iconv, I need to know its original encoding. Most browsers have an Auto Detect option in encodings, however, I can't check those text files one by one because there are too many.
Only having known the original encoding, I then can convert the texts by iconv -f DETECTED_CHARSET -t utf-8.
Is there any utility to detect the encoding of plain text files? It DOES NOT have to be 100% perfect, I don't mind if there're 100 files misconverted in 1,000,000 files.

I had an open office document text and accidentally over-wrote it with a completely different file! i am not sure how it happened but it seems like I "saved link as" from a browser and accidentally double clicked on the existing file - and it now contains the text I was downloading.
does ubuntu save old versions of documents? does open office have a revert function? i really need the document that was lost and it seems like this problem is way too easy to make for there not to be safeguard,

I am working on a presentation in OpenOffice's Impress. When I try to put animation in either the text or pics, it suddenly quits. I then click into it again and it does a recovery. Has anyone had this problem? What have you done about it? I am on a Dell optiplex 745 dual core with 2 gig memory operating in 10.04.

I want to convert many text files(copied from windows workstation) into utf-8 encoding file. Yes, iconv is available for it. However, I have to give source file encoding at the command line parameters! The problem is, at most case, I am not sure the source encoding of it. And, I also want to use a script to convert many files recursively.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 and Open Office 3.2.1. I guess that this problem may affect Libre Office too, but I will be happy to be proved wrong about that. I am editing a document that was originally produced in Microsoft Word (the standard .doc format). It is a form produced by a national organisation and it has to be sent back to them, and when submitted it has to be no longer than two A4 pages. It contains a series of headings and (expanding) text boxes for content.
In order to be sure about the length, I did most of the editing with Microsoft Word on my wife's laptop. On that machine, and on a PC that has a different version of Word, the document fits exactly within the two-page limit. But on my laptop, using Open Office, it appears considerably longer, taking up two-and-a-half pages. Why is this, and can anything be done to correct it? Open Office appears to be using the same fonts as Microsoft Word - the font names are the same, anyway - and the font sizes are the same, yet the text appears to take up more of the page display.

How do you convert Open Office (ODT) documents to Text files?
I have made a report using libre office. Now I wish to continue editing the document using lyx (latex front end). So the ODT file needs to be saved as some .tex file.
I don't see an option to do this in File menu (export/save as). So is there any other plugin to do this?

Any open office file (all dot odt format)that I attempt to open opens in the document recovery mode;click recover goes to successfully recovered, click finish & the file closes. Attempt to re-open and this circularity begins. Open other dot odt files and ea joins the list of documents to recover and the list just adds each successive file to be recovered in other words all open office files are in a circular path.

Okay so I have a file that I always save and close properly and get in my Ubuntu One folder for backup that will not open. Its called "Income.ods" and is quite important and I cannot seem to recover it. When I double click it, it shows the Libre Office Calc splash screen shows up then goes away and the nothing, no error messages, no nothing. I tried to open it on my Windows Vista machine and it said it was corrupted and could not open in Office Word. I tried a few recovery tools but to no avail.

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

I have a few ogg files that I want to put on my phone. My phone doesn't play oggs, so I need to convert. It's just an audiobook so I really don't care about quality. Oddly, nothing I try seems to be up to the task. Here's what I tried so far:
sox my.ogg my.mp3: "sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `x.mp3': SoX was compiled without MP3 encoding support" mencoder: wants video too?? Wha?? vlc (from GUI): "p, li { white-space: pre-wrapStreaming / Transcoding failed: It seems your FFMPEG (libavcodec) installation lacks the following encoder: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3. If you don't know how to fix this, ask for support from your distribution.
This is not an error inside VLC media player. Do not contact the VideoLAN project about this issue." lame my.ogg my.mp3: "sorry, vorbis support in LAME is deprecated." audicity (via GUI): success..but I'm now going to have to somehow script it. This is very annoying. It makes me want to rip directly into mp3 from now on. Is there an easy way to convert an ogg file to an mp3 from the command-line?

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.
