I have a word file that i transfered to my ubuntu laptop, when i copied it here it was changed to a rtf file
When i try to open this file Openoffice opens up but then immediately freezes and when I click on quit it tells me openOffice is not responding. I just did an update and its still doing the same .
I wanted to compose a letter and include photos that are on my other (secondary) hd. When I navigate to the folder that the photo is in, OpenOffice suddenly crashes without warning. Then I have to recover my file. If I insert a photo from my main hd (the one with SuSE 11.2 on it) then there's no problem. Why does it crash when I try to go into my other hard drive? (It gets automatically mounted as /local when I boot into the system). I'm running Open SuSE 11.2 and OpenOffice 3.1.1.4 (from an .rpm)

I am obliged o go online and use some of those "Type Spanish accents" online site to do my Spanish work. But I can't, it is too much because the accents, etc.
Also, I found some packages to download but it says that they are "Authenticated"

View 2 Replies View RelatedAm using openofficeorg. 3.0 on my linux server and everytime i insert jpeg pictures or scan pictures and insert them in my word, i cant view the pictures directly in word unless i preview. when i insert the picture in word it only show me the frame and its written on graphics 1 but when i page preview i can see the picture and even the printer can print the picture.

It sometimes makes it annoying when reading files saved in MS Word .doc format that other people send me. Does anyone know if there is an extension to fix this? Or settings that can be changed? Also, was this addressed in version 3.3.0 of OpenOffice? Has anyone tried it on LibreOffice? I don't want to install VirtualBox, Windows, and Office to read Word files properly. I dislike MS.

If I try to open one of these files in openOffice for Lucid, it causes OpenOffice to freeze every time. If I save the files in OpenOffice format and share them between Maverick and Lucid - everything works fine. Anyone know what might be causing OpenOffice in Lucid to freeze when loading word 97/2000 files?
View 5 Replies View RelatedIn my graduate professional writing program, I have had to make several documents that integrate graphics. In order to manage the graphics, I taught myself how to use frames. But I discovered that the Openoffice.org word processor has a problem saving the frames correctly. I save my document and close it. When I reopen it later, the graphics in some of the frames (not all) are distorted; they appear cut in half. Examining the frames, I determined that the anchors of the affected frames had changed since I saved and closed. Changing the anchors back to whatever they were restored the graphics to normal. Every time I saved and closed, this happened again. The first solution I came up with was to save with the frames set properly, and export the document as a PDF file; the frame anchor settings will not mess up for that.
Then, because I save my school documents as Word files (the university--that program, anyway--doesn't use Linux), I tried saving the document as an OpenOffice text document (.odt). That also avoided the frame anchor settings problem, meaning the problem occurs only when saving as a Word document. But since my professors probably don't use OpenOffice, I am submitting PDF documents in this situation.
I am a graduate student writing a dissertation in modern history. More than half of my computer work takes place on a word processor.I take notes, make outlines, and then write drafts of papers, chapters, presentations, etc. I regularly have to share these files with others who use operating systems other than Linux.I have just switched from OS X (after 5 years and half of using Mac) and I am still figuring out how to write my next dissertation chapter in Ubuntu.
There seems to be no consensus on what is or what are the best word processing softwares -- especially for academic writers -- in Ubuntu or Linux for that matter.I have read a number of posts on various forums and I find them either dated by several years or not dealing with the problems I am facing :
namely writing a serious, book-length academic work in the humanities and desiring to work with a user-friendly and fast word processor that would also be powerful enough to accomplish most or all academic tasks such as footnotes, style change, bibliography, accessibility, etc. There are people who suggest using LaTeX (LyX, Kile, etc.) but it seems to me that they're mostly based in the exact sciences and benefit from the math and science features that exist in LyX or another LaTeX editor. LaTeX is moreover not very accessible to those who do not know the LaTeX language or do not have an editor and work primarily with a word processor: meaning that when I share a LaTex document with my colleagues they have difficulty editing my work. My own personal experience with OpenOffice.org has not been very positive. It's pretty slow and has problems with multiple language input. Switching from Nisus Writer Pro and Mellel (both OS X softwares), OpenOffice.org Word Processor seems also not very user-friendly. It seems to follow the design of MS Word (or what MS Word used to be) and feels above all *cluttered.* I am however trying to like it as I understand there's probably no other word processor better than OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu. Am I correct to assume this? I also downloaded Kword which in terms of interface and egronomic design seems quite nice. It is also a bit faster -- although I don't know how powerful Kword is at the moment and whether it can accomplish all that my academic work requires from a word processor. I have also read somewhere that AbiWord is really not all that powerful. It is meant to be a fast but "lean" word processor which would do basic things quickly.
How can I change the default word processor (to openoffice) on Slackware 13.1, with KDE? When I click on a file using dolphin, .doc files open with kwrite. I would like them to open with open office.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using a ZaReason Terra HD netbook. I have not changed any of the default hardware, nor messed with any of the X or openoffice settings. For almost as long as I've had the computer, I've been getting random X crashes. The screen goes to black, dumps some text, and I'm given a series of options of what to do (low-graphics mode, diagnostics, exit to terminal). From what I've gathered, this only happens when openoffice is running (it can be in the background, it does not have to be the active application).
I really have no idea what to do or what is causing this. I've attached a log, and I will gladly attach whatever else might be useful. I've looked on the internet for help, and while I do see a lot of X and openoffice issues, they seem to be related to higher end hardware than I have. I'm running Ubuntu 10.4, openoffice.org 3.2, and using an Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated Graphics Controller .
Note: the attached log is a text file, but I made it a .doc because it barely exceeded the file size limit for .txt .
Since installing ubuntu 10.10 in january, my Openoffice (it seems mainly calc) regularly crashes. It always manage to keep file recovery active (even it's not always the latest). There is no really identified pattern except basically editing cells

I just try to reset my preferences (move $HOME/.openoffice.org to .old) and I will see if it changes something.
I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed OpenSUSE 11.2 with KDE as my default DA I have installed KDE4 style "Polyester" from Yast > Install Software.
Now the problem is when I activate "Polyester" theme than all OpenOffice app will be broken. All OpenOffice application will start but closed immediately with crash. Also it will work perfectly with other KDE4 theme. Is this a bug or I need to setup something? I like the "Polyester" theme and I want to use it.
Since when I upgraded OpenSuse from 10.2 to 11.3 (big jump, I know!), I can no longer use OpenOffice. When Java is Active, the OO applications crash after a few operations. Most of times they don't even start.
When run in a terminal, OO answers with errors like this:

I have OO.o 3.1.1.4 installed on my SuSE 11.2 system. (It came with it.)I've tried connecting to my older OO.o address book database and it seems to have connected (I get no error messages) but when I try to open the database source from within Writer, or any other OO.o tool (either by pressing F4 or going to View > Data Sources) OpenOffice crashes. I can open my database as an .ods or a .dbf or .odb.When I open it as an .odb, I end up with some sort of form wizard designer. All looks ok, the table is there (and it looks good!) but then what? If I close that wizard, the table then closes with it.
I've also used File > Templates > Address Book Source. After using that, if I hit F4, OOo crashes.My main problem is that OO.o crashes when I try to view the database source from within a document.P.S. I do have Java (Sun's version of Java 1.6.0) installed and OO.o seems to know it's there and is registered.
using 32 & 64 bit, lucid's openoffice 3.2 autorecovery doesn't activate after crash. 1 upgrade was from hardy to lucid and the other from karmic, regardless neither works. in hardy, after a power out, machine freeze, etc., i would reboot and log in, then ALL OO files that were open would be recovered from the wizard. Now that's gone. Yes, the AutoRecovery save option is set, it just doesn't appear after a crash like it used to.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files.When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have to write lab reports with charts and graphs on a regular basis. i did the first one in open office recently but the charts did not appear on my teachers screen! it was a broken failed half rendered blank chart area!
The data tables copied fine but the graphs did not. i made both in spreadsheet and copy pasted them over to a writer document.
Are there any programs out there that can be downloaded like word processor or open office so i can use it for school and print from it. I have figured out my internet and sound problem here just throwing out another easy problem that most likely will be solved.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 and Open Office 3.2.1. I guess that this problem may affect Libre Office too, but I will be happy to be proved wrong about that. I am editing a document that was originally produced in Microsoft Word (the standard .doc format). It is a form produced by a national organisation and it has to be sent back to them, and when submitted it has to be no longer than two A4 pages. It contains a series of headings and (expanding) text boxes for content.
In order to be sure about the length, I did most of the editing with Microsoft Word on my wife's laptop. On that machine, and on a PC that has a different version of Word, the document fits exactly within the two-page limit. But on my laptop, using Open Office, it appears considerably longer, taking up two-and-a-half pages. Why is this, and can anything be done to correct it? Open Office appears to be using the same fonts as Microsoft Word - the font names are the same, anyway - and the font sizes are the same, yet the text appears to take up more of the page display.
I am trying to open up a ppt presentation and with openoffice 3.2 I keep getting and error message saying that the versions are incompatible. Is there any software that is compatible with what I would assume is MS office 2010?
