I've had Ubuntu 11.04 installed on my desktop since it's release. Up until an hour ago, it was working fine. I clicked on an update from the update manager, now booting into a graphical mode is completely broken, (the start-up load hangs at 'Check Battery State ... [0k]'). I restarted my computer, and booted into safe mode, and launched the terminal. This all works fine. I then typed :

The last line was printed about 8 times, with slightly different times, before it gave up and failed. Some information which might help, I have Gnome 2, Unity and KDE (not sure which version), installed. My graphics card is the GTX 275, and I have driver the Nvidia driver 275.21. So yeah, I think the update has gone and moved custom.conf somewhere, but I have no idea on how to fix it. I have a graphics programming assignment due on Friday and I would be eternally grateful if I could get this fixed well before then.
is there a way to produce a .deb file out of a regular firefox precompiled downloadable binary, the ones we can download of their ftp? I don't want to start an iceweasel/firefox flame war.
I am trying to find the ip address on my Red Hat Linux box, but there is no ipconfig file in my /sbin/ directory. I did a 'locate ipconfig' in the terminal and the only files I got were plipconfig, sipconfig.py/c/o, plipconfig.8.gz, ipconfig.h. I dont know what happened to my ipconfig file. Where I can get a new copy of it?
I can access my NAS box with telnet but the file I am looking for is not in the expected directory. Of course I could go through all the directories using ls -a but that would take days. Is there a command I can run to look for the file for me using the telnet console?

I have been spending several days getting wxwidgets to work in code::blocks ide on several different platforms. Now I am down to one instance that I can't figure out. I have wxwidgets working in Fedora 13 x64, but cannot get it to work in a Fedora 13 x32 version. Actually, wxwidgets seem to be installed OK, but I run into compiler errors when I try to compile the default wxhello project. I get quite a few messages, in different header files, of this type:

I did a yum info command on both systems for every relevant package I could think of, including gcc(v4.4.4), gcc-c++(4.4.4), libgcc(4.4.4), libstdc++(4.4.4), boost(1.41.0), wxGTK(2.8.11), wxBase(2.8.11). Both systems are fully updated and have the same versions, with the only difference being 32 vs 64 bit. The same headers compile with no errors on the x64 system, but not x32. I have been able to find no other reason for this error than older versions of the preprocessor, yet that is apparently not the case here).
I'm trying to upgrade a headless terminal server like box from Etch to Lenny. Users log in to this box using a GoGlobal client and use applications such as OpenOffice and Iceweasel. Because of the ended support for Etch we want to upgrade this machine to Debian Lenny as soon as possible and in order to save time we decided to dist-upgrade instead of installing a new machine. I've done this upgrade in a test environment and everything is working as expected except for OpenOffice, which seems broken after the upgrade:
The problem seems to be caused by the anti aliasing features of OpenOffice and disabling these features in the options panel (Extra -> Options -> OpenOffice.org View -> Screen font anti aliasing) fixes the UI somewhat:
However, as can be seen in the last screenshot, disabling anti aliasing makes the whole thing look terrible. I've searches the net for solutions such as this one but so far I've not been able to fix this. Is there anyone who can point me towards what has changed in the way fonts are rendered since Lenny and what might cause this breakage for OpenOffice? Other applications such as Iceweasel work perfectly and look better then before.
When running the beta of blender 2.5, I get the following error. blender: error while loading shared libraries: libpython2.5.so.1.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory In previous versions of ubuntu you could 'apt-get install python2.5' to resolve the issue, but it doesn't appear in any/all of the repositories. where I can get python2.5 for lucid-lynx?

Spotify released a native linux client about a year ago. It would be awesome if I could use it on my linux desktop at work. Unfortunately, these computers are managed by a central server and so I can't install anything without system admin rights. I was wondering if there was a binary available that I could run from my home directory? The operating system we use is openSUSE 11.3 64-bit.
I had been running the official build from the OOo Web site. I've deleted that and now want to install the version from the Fedora repos. yum install openoffice.org* yum's response: No package openoffice.org* available. Error: Nothing to do Then I tried to be more explicit:
In Windows and Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org (2.4 and 3), there is an auto replace tab available at Tools > AutoCorrect. That is what automatically fixes spelling mistakes like teh, and lets me set my own codes for replacements I need to use. In Fedora, this tab is missing. Anyone know how I can get it back?
I'm using openSUSE 11.2 x86_64 and I've installed OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 from Index of /repositories/OpenOffice.org:/STABLE/openSUSE_11.2 . However, the menu option Tools->Macros->Record Macro is missing (it is present in the official build of OpenOffice.org for windows and the one distributed in archlinux). Is this a bug? I've searched the Novell bugzilla for resolved and open bugs for this, but I've found nothing.
Good day, having a spot of bother with Openoffice, for some unknown reason im finding majority of the menu & button names have been replaced with "O" characters instead. Its doesn't effect all, but for example in the Writer, the only drop down menu at the top being render correctly is "Table". code... All the buttons/sub buttons still work if you can guess where their pointing!
The only way I can seem to solve it is to remove "openoffice.org-gnome" & "openoffice.org-gtk" package.
Ive tried a complete reinstall already. Its usable without the above gnome and gtk extras but obviously not as nice to look at.
Im sure it was working fine the last time I used it?
I'm trying to print a spreadsheet from Openoffice 3.0.1 (Xubuntu 9.04), I'd like to use the A3 pagesize but the Print dialog shows only A4 and Letter.. Other applications work fine.
In Slackware 13.1, my OpenOffice menu buttons did not appear after installing the Slackbuild from slackbuild.org. I think this is a common issue. After reading around, I putCode:export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kdeinto my /etc/profile. OpenOffice now opens fine and all the menu button icons are present and correct but this only happens if I start OO from the CLI. In a project I'm working on with a few other people, I got the task of writing an assembler. The last thing I do is convert the commands into a binary representation, and jam it into a file. Now one of my teammates said he'd like to be able to "reference" the code within another program. He said he'd be able to do this if the file I output is a Linux object file. I'm thinking it'd also work as an executable. Anyway, he said he'd like to be able to grab the file and reference the binary by address. I'm still fuzzy on this, and if you're confused with what I said here, please tell me so I can ask him for better details.Anyway, I'm aware that gcc can compile files to ".o", but that's only for C/C++, and my file is just binary. I'm also aware of "ld", but I haven't seen any use of it to help me. I'm happy to hear suggestions as to what I can do. If anything, I think I'll implement a few functions to grab the bits and hand them to him in an array or something.
