I'm running slackware 13.37 and when looking through the x.org log I see that two directories are missing:

Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.
If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.
A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.
Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.
Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.
Not sure what precipitated this but Administration and Preferences are missing from the System menu. how to get them back? I have to go through the Gnome menu to get to System, not sure how it got removed from the panel.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA client has sent me a docx. Actually it's not the first he's sent and it always causes me some kind of problems. When I open the document (a normal boring 3 page text document) with Open Office some of the characters are replaced with little empty boxes. From context I suspect they are things like slashes and commas - but I don't know for sure.
I copy and pasted some into gedit and there they appeared as boxes with letters and numbers inside like FF04. Is there some way to find out what these symbols are? I don't need to see them or print them, I just need to know if it is a plus sign, back slash, u with umlauts, or whatever.
My gnome-font-viewer is missing. When i type it in the terminal i get the error :

Unfortunately far for all unicode characters can be displayed in Fedora by default, (much less than in M$ Wnd). There is a tool that aim to find and install missing fonts when an non-displayable character appears, but it starts mainly when I accidentally open non-text file in terminal and never when a web-page I open in Mozilla Firefox (or Konqueror) contains such kind of characters. So, I see a rectangle with hexadecimal number of character in it (or simply empty rectangle in case of Konqueror) and don't know if there is a easy way to see it by installing missing font automatically (or manually at last) for range of this character or a way to install complete font collection to display all unicode characters from all ranges.

i have upgraded my desktop from 13.0 to 13.1 and the font rendering suffered big time (did the same procedure on the laptop but no problems there). anyway, the fonts on kdm are really bad as well as konsole and firefox. other qt apps don't seem too bad but should be much better. xterm and xmobar don't seem to be affected at all. the machine is running the 13.1 sbo of nvidia drivers.
i have tried a few things: playing with the anti-aliasing settings in kde control center (all the settings offered differnet level of 'badness' and no 'goodness') and trying to use the settings in the nvidia control panel but that didn't seem to have any effect.
I installed slack 13 from disk 1, and then went ahead and installed the missing sets using slapt-get (t,tcl,x,xap and y). I skipped the kde and kdei sets. When I start xfce, the fonts are all messed up as shown in the attachment.

I've been reading the manual pages and somewhere or other I'm missing some thing about adding font paths (or replacing the default font paths). I have the complete Adobe Type Library plus TTF's installed in /usr/local/share/fonts (and they work just fine with OpenOffice.org) but I can't seem to figure out how to get them or the Slackware-provided fonts available to XPDF.

But now i wish to change the font to Courier New. From what i have read this is a Microsoft font, so is there a way that i could get it into Slackware 13?
I found out that an installation of Redhat already has that font and when i do set gfn=Courier New 13 in my .gvimrc in Redhat, the fonts are available(which is not so in Slackware 13)
I've installed some custom programming fonts, namely Speedy.pcf. Its a .pcf, so I just coped it into /usr/share/fonts/misc, and ran mkfontscale, mkfontdir. I can use the font fine in 'xfontsel' and 'urxvt', but when GTK2 tries to render this font. its not even the same font, its just using some default font.

It reminds me of the bad old days of having to recompile freetype with the then-patent-encumbered option to make the fonts look decent. When I print, everything looks normal. On screen it doesn't look right. I don't really know how to describe it other than it how things used to change after a freetype recompile. Is there anything major that changed between 13.1 and 13.37 WRT fonts in KDE, X, or freetype for that matter? FWIW, I did a clean install with a new .kde instead of using the old one.

I was using UBUNTU and still do, but I dual boot UBUNTU/Slackware now and my Linux knowledge has increased so much. This forum has been right there with me for the last couple weeks and I was reticent to post a question until a knew I had exhausted the available sources. So here goes.....Can I change the font size of the system shell that begins at startup (with the boot info and stuff). I really like using this shell as user. The thing that would make me nuts for it is if I can make the text a bit smaller. I have a 1920x1200 display and could really take advantage of all of that "real estate." The other posts related to this seem to focus an a broken configuration from the beginning, but my install is SWEET. Can I change this or is it baked into the system?
View 11 Replies View RelatedNFS server is on Slackware-current64 and client is on 13.1. The directory being exported is vfat formatted on a firewire drive. I've been accessing this share on the client with Amarok and Juk without incident for a couple of months. Yesterday I decided to try out moc on the client with this setup. After many revisions to fstab options on both the server and client I still get the same result: after a couple of hours running moc post remounting and re-exporting, the directories on the nfs share on the client start disappearing or corrupting.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUpdated from KDE 4.3.5, saw memory consumption dropped a little bit, speed increased by a few percent. But when I added a widget to the panel, I could not see the widget. And when I double-clicked the same widget in the widget list (intending to remove it -- if it is a T' flip-flop), the widget was still on the panel, alive, and hidden.
Then I gave up, and wanted to change the font for the digital clock, and KDE was frozen. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace worked, fortunately. I think for my workshop presentation next week, I'd better use xfce.
How do I increase the font size on a tty. I have googled it and still don't have a Slackware way of doing it. What /etc file needs to be edited?

'call to lnusertemp failed (temporary directories full?)'
When I ctl-alt-backspace there are numerous messages including these two;
'/usr/bin/kde4-config: symbol lookup error:/user/lib/libkdecore.so.5:
undefined symbol: _zn9qlistdatadetach3ev.
and
startkde: error: could not locate lnusertemp in /usr/bin/startkde: line
302::command not found.
Linux 13.0 worked OK right out of the "box" so I don't understand why this version has this problem. Was something changed from 13.0 to 13.1?
I've got following problem: need to burn files which are spread through several directories, have names longer that 32 chars, and the chars like " " (space) nad other strange are allowed in the names of files. The file sizes are about 300 MB up to 1.5 GB (perhaps more). I want to burn .iso images (not on fly). I'm not using any graphical interface, so programs like k3b are not allowed.

I checked in about:config, and the general. useragent.extra.linux string is still set to Slackware Linux.Is there something different to do for FF-4x? View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter installing libre3.3.2 using the Slackbuild scripts, I found that it displayed fonts correctly, but doesn't print the same font on the printer. The output of the printer should be Arial, but is instead some elongated, overlapping mess.
The same Slackware package installed on SW13.1 prints normally. (Same computer, different partition)
Spadmin used to control the printer fonts, but apparently not anymore.

I had a fresh install of Slackware 13.1 up and running. I was looking to use an app which could only run on a gnome distro. So I installed gnomeslackbuild.
