The new 2.6.35.7 kernel fails to boot on my Lenovo laptop. I had previously compiled a 2.6.35 kernel with a couple of different .config files and never had it boot properly. The failure occurs very quickly and I am including the final screenshot in case that helps.

I have been trying to install centos5.3 with an remote hdd (via ISCSI with Intel Nic and remote iscsi boot). If I install the centos with default partitioning (LVM, just /, swap,and /boot partitions), everything installs fine. However, if I install with custom partitions, particularly putting /var and /usr in their own partitions, I get all sorts of error during reboots. It tells me that the system cannot touch a couple files (in /var and /usr) because they do no exist. I recently did a fresh install of current and once I had it up and running I compiled a fresh 2.6.33 kernel using my old config file, but now I get this warning durning boot, specifically during module loading WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release. This doesn't seem to be causing any problems but I am curious to know what the message meams? I checked /etc/modprobe but everything looks normal.

I started with the Slackware Generic-SMP 32bit kernel config (this is a 32bit kernel config). All credit for (in my opinion) the best starting place for any kernel config goes to Patrick Vokerding. (Please tell me if I am or am not doing this properly in terms of respecting the work of others, GPL, GNU, etc.)

View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to put Avast on my 11.04 machine, it didn't work, what's worse is that now only one kernel will work properly. any time i try any kernel other than 2.6.38-9-generic(it came with the install CD)the boot process stops at different points but it's during the time that it is starting and stopping processes. oh yeah, i've tried install different linux systems and they all work with what comes with the install cd but when i try to change the kernel same problem.

By the system the card is marked as eth1. If you have a look at rc.inet1(.conf) you see that by default an eth1 has no wireless extensions. how to set up my network.

The laptop runs win 7 64 bit so I'm trying to go with Fedora 64 but it will not boot. I first installed Fedora 12 64 bit from the DVD install and it would go to grub fine but when I boot the fedora os It just stops in the middle of the boot script. When it stops, the last 4 lines are:

I hadn't messed with it for a few weeks and yesterday I saw that 13 was out, so I downloaded and burnt the Fedora 13 64 bit CD. I popped it in, booted the computer and it did the same crap. It didn't stop at the same line but it was around a line with:

So I guess the kernel isn't loading properly or something. Do ya'll think I would be better off using the 32 bit?

After a kernel update, the system always updates the GRUB menu, and the newer kernel is the default boot option.However, after an update on my F13 X64 system, the GRUB menu was updated, the config file still sets the default to "1" but if i left the automatic boot it will boot the previous kernel... am I crazy or missing something here?Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf file:

I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:
And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.
I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...
My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.
I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.
This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.
I found in one thread a note about some kernel config parameters which should be used by servers.

I updated my kernel in slackware current but can't install lilo, when i was with my old kernel it gave an error about not finding the sda drives (they were named hda before the upgrade).I booted into the slackware 13.0 dvd and modified fstab and lilo.conf replacing hda with sda but lilo still gives an error of not finding sda drives.How can i install lilo so i can boot into my sistem??

I've tried to optimize the kernel as much as I can and know it (removing options, not needed drivers and so on) and compiled the modules into the kernel (no loadable modules anymore). I've started with Slackware 13.0 and the default config for 2.6.29.6-huge. Still I am not sure what to remove/optimize further now.
My question: Is there a way to boot with a kernel with loadable modules, check which modules are really needed for this hardware, (do something like lsmod) and save the running configuration modules for a next kernel compile to be the default .config instead of writing them down by hand and search for the appropriate names in .config or during menuconfig? (Note: zcat /proc/config.gz > .config is NOT the way I want, as it gives me just the current kernel config)

I am using Grub2. When I rebooted the new kernel was in the grub list all right. But booting from that kernel fails with no errors or warning. The screen just goes blank. The disk usage indicator LED also doesn't glow which I guess means that the kernel isn't being read from the disk. I rebooted using my older kernel and it booted properly. Then, when I listed my /boot directory, I noticed that there was no initrd.img for 2.6.39. kernel in there, which I think is the problem.
I am attempting to compile the linux-2.6.35.13 kernel from kernel.org to use with an installation of Fedora 14 (2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64). Would the devs mind sharing why the change hasn't been made? I'm guessing there must be a lot of Slackware users with 15-20 year old computers that want to run the latest software.

But again i am getting same error. I think i have to add "-lexpat" in LDFLAG. But i dont know how to do that.
