Slackware :: Select Correct Module Directory At Boot?

Jun 2, 2010

To clarify: I have two kernels, (a) one that "works" and (b) another that I am experimenting with. Each has it's own modules directory tree (in /lib/modules) and they are mutually incompatible ie kernel (a) will only work with module tree (a) and similarly for (b). I have two boot entries in lilo.conf which can be selected from the boot menu.

Now the problem is, what if something goes wrong when I boot to (b)? I'd like to be able to return to the safe option (a), but the current module tree is (b) and it won't work with kernel (a). I could use the Slack installationCD and rename the module directory (I presume this would work)but is there a simpler way, whereby I can select the correct module tree at boot time (or set it in lilo.conf)?

General :: Setting Up A Dual Boot With Win XP And Slackware 13.1?

Nov 13, 2010

I am having some trouble setting up a dual boot with Win XP and Slackware 13.1. Lilo lists both Linux and Windows, but when I select Windows, all I get is a black screen. I have two hard drives, sda1 and sdb1. I first installed Windows on sdb1 (it is a smaller, older drive). I then installed Slackware on sda1 and selected to install Lilo on the MBR. I'm guessing that by doing this, I wrote over the Windows information that was already there. Could this be my problem? I feel like this should be an easy fix, but I just don't know where to start in order to fix it. If it helps, here is the end of my lilo.conf file.

# Windows bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/sdb1
label = Windows
table = /dev/sdb
# Windows bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz

Ubuntu :: Unable To Select OS After Setting Colors In Grub 2?

Apr 25, 2010

I'm using Karmic with Grub 2 (1.97b4) I have this strange problem going on and believe it might be a bug so if no resolution will file it on Launchpad. Whats happening is this:when I installed Karmic fresh a couple of months ago I never did anything with customising the Grub splash screen. I just stuck with the boring black/white and if I wanted to got to Memtest or my little used Win XP partition would just hit the down arrow when the Grub Splash appeared and go there.A couple of days ago I decided to add some custom colors to the splash screen as outlined in the Grub 2 documentation. I did this to both my desktop (Acer Aspire L100) and my laptop (Compaq) Everything looks fine except for one thing. On the desktop if I hit the down arrow (or any other key) it immediately boots the first option which of course is Karmic. It should have paused the timer and allowed me to scroll down. What this means is I can only boot Karmic at this time. This is only happening on the desktop!

CentOS 5 :: At Boot Time - See The Message "Setting Up LVM" And After A While "LVM Not Found

Sep 21, 2010

I speeded up boot time significantly. This was accomplished by using chkconfig off to stop unneeded services from starting at boot time and by reinstalling without LVMs

There are now just two remaining things that are slowing down boot time:

1- At boot time, I see the message "Setting up LVM" and after a while "LVM not found" Is there a way to keep Centos from trying to set up LVM? (I am not using LVM, that is why it is not found)

2- I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad and there is a delay at boot time as Centos setting up the built in mouse: "TPPS/2 IBM TRACKPOINT as class /input/input6"

I do not need the trackpoint (I use an USB mouse), Is there a way to disable the built in trackpoint (mouse) so that Centos doesn't spend unnecessary time install it at boot time?

General :: Stop From Re-setting The Display Brightness?

Mar 16, 2010

After manually setting the display brightness on my laptop, the system re-sets the value. If the laptop is plugged in, the value is set to full brightness; if it is not plugged in, it is set to dimmer. How do I stop that behavior?

Note that I am not talking about what it does in response to the event of plugging in or unplugging my system. It changes on it's own - usually several minutes after I change the brightness value. I have observed this behavior on different systems, different distributions, and different desktop environments.

Ubuntu :: Reboot And Select Proper Boot Device Or Insert Boot Media In Selected Boot Device And Press A Key

Apr 16, 2011

Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I got this error after: Reducing my Windows 7 partition by about 100gb. Creating a new partition (100gb) and copying my Ubuntu partition (10gb) to the new partition. After it was copied, and pasted, the original partition was deleted. I now had two partitions a new 100gb Ubuntu partition and a 600gb (or so) Windows 7 partition.

All of this was done using a bootable USB with Ubuntu 10.10 and GParted partition editor. Now when I boot I get the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." error.

Ubuntu :: Setting Evolution Message Filter For New Email?

May 21, 2010

I have had a search for this problem, but have not found a match: undoubtedly it is so straightforward that no-one has needed to ask it before: I have two accounts in Evolution, work and gmail. I would like my work email (which I check via IMAP) to be copied locally as it comes in so that I can file it properly, but also kept on the server so that I can access through my laptop.

I have set a message filter which does the following:
Code:
IF
status is not read
THEN
set status read
copy to folder Inbox
Stop processing
The filter works (if I apply manually then it goes) AND I have set the preferences to apply filters automatically, but no joy when a new email arrives.

Ubuntu :: Stop Mouse Clicks Being Repeated - Minimum Delay For Double Click / Debounce Setting?

Jul 7, 2010

When I click once with my bluetooth mouse (Logitech M550b), about one time in three ubuntu receives two clicks.I'm not sure if this is a problem with the mouse or a bug in the OS, but even if it is a problem with the mouse these two clicks arrive at the same time, way too quickly to be a genuine double click.I have searched everywhere (including all the options in gconf-editor) and cannot find where the debounce delay is set for mice. Debounce should ensure that two clicks occurring in rapid succession are interpreted as a single click and thereby solve my problem.

The mouse settings window and gconf-editor both have a setting for 'maximum double click delay', but nothing for 'minimum double click delay' (AKA debounce delay). Does anyone know how I can change the setting so that two simultaneous clicks from the same mouse will be interpreted as a single click?Alternatively, does anyone know of an ubuntu bug which might be causing a single click to be interpreted as two simultaneous clicks? I suspect that the mouse is not the source of problem but have not had a chance to test it on another machine to confirm.I've searched the forum history and found lots of other people having the same problem of phantom double clicks, but nobody has found a solution in any of the previous threads.
