Slackware :: Warning Message During Kernel Boot - All Configuration Files Need
Mar 12, 2010
I recently did a fresh install of current and once I had it up and running I compiled a fresh 2.6.33 kernel using my old config file, but now I get this warning durning boot, specifically during module loading WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/sound, it will be ignored in a future release. This doesn't seem to be causing any problems but I am curious to know what the message meams? I checked /etc/modprobe but everything looks normal.

I am an old Debian user, ho just reinstalled it again to see how it evolved since my las version (3.2). I am sharing it with Arch Linux, And decided to let bot of them. I am using GDM compiled and configured in Arch, and removed GDM2 from Debian (i just like the easy menu.list from the old GDM). The problem is that when i update the kernel, it didn't fing GDM and drops an error message. I tried removing the distro-preconfigured Kernels, as i compiled my own 3.0.0-rc2 Kerenel, but i cant delete the previous ones. Now everytime i do an install or uptgrade, apt-get drops wastes some time, and drops an error message:
[code]...
What can i do? i googled some similar errors, but where just messed up mirror.lists, or similar, i know it isnt the cause of fail.

The new 2.6.35.7 kernel fails to boot on my Lenovo laptop. I had previously compiled a 2.6.35 kernel with a couple of different .config files and never had it boot properly. The failure occurs very quickly and I am including the final screenshot in case that helps.

I do not know if this is really something I should worry about. I am running Debian testing on my laptop (HP Pavillon dv6). Today, the aptitude update---aptitude upgrade gave me a new kernel (2.6.39). However, if I boot with that kernel, I get a warning (do not know if that is the way I should call this) telling me that the machine failed to get the i915 symbols so turbo graphics will be disabled.I have not done any serious test, but at first sight I do not notice any difference performance-wise with respect to the previous kernel. what am I supposed to do to fix this?

I used mkinitrd to build an initrd from the slackware 2.6.37.6 sources. Lilo throws the following: "Warning: The initial RAM disk is too big to fit between the kernel a the 15M-16M memory hole. It will be loaded in the highest memory as though the configuration file specified "large-memory" and it will be assumed that the BIOS supports memory moves above 16M."
Also, I am running swap, / and home on an encrypted volume group. When the initrd boots (but prior to mounting the encrypted vg) I get a message saying that no modules are found-sounds like a daft question but is this expected? I expect that this is because initrd is looking for modules, but can't find them because the relevant partition isn't mounted.

I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:
And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.
I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...
My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.
I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.
This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.

I have gone through all the kernel config options repeatedly, but everytime I get the same error after running my configured kernel.
To begin with, after unpacking the kernel I get Undefined video mode numer: 305 and then a selection of video modes appears.
Why are the standard settings in my lilo 1024x768x256 (vga 773) not accepted?
VFS: Cannot open root device "808" or unknown block(8,8) Please append a correct "root"=" boot option; here are the available partitions: Kernel panic- not syncing :VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block(8,8)
My partitions are ext2, and this format (as well as other formats) are compiled in the kernel.

I'm building an i7 based machine and I've been looking at kernel optimizations for it. One kernel option that I'm sketchy on and haven't been able to find a good resource for is for MAXIMUM NUMA NODES. The default is 6, but I'm not sure if this is best for my particular hardware or not and I'm not exactly sure what this is all about.

Is there any way to set up my system so that, just before I run out of RAM, and SWAP is utilized, I can get a warning message so that I can kill the memory hog before my computer slows to a crawl?I'm a programmer, and it's happened a few times that my programs have memory leaks and run over into SWAP and effectively freeze my system.

Sometimes when I try to open some chat application i get a strange warning message asking for password. The message is that /usr/libexec/mission-control is trying to gain access of the system, please provide the password. On top of the message box it shows "Unlock Keyring".
This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.
what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?
I am using Empathy as my chat application

Why is it when I run gedit, there are always tonnes of error or warning messages? (Even though my gedit ran successfully)
To name a few:
1. GConf error: failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you ned to enable TCP/IP networking for 0 RBit, or you have stale NFS lockes due to a system crash.
2. Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply among others.
Just to mention again my gedit is running fine though. Is there any configuration that I missed out? or I can disable to avoid these nuisance?

The function sys_msgsnd failedgiving the obvious error -EFAULT.However, I was able to send the message from kernel to user space when I had made the same driver part of kernel (and not inserting it).How is that possible?I am using linux.2.6.19.x (arch=ppc)I now use Netlink socket to communicate from kernel to user, but the aboveproblem seemed strange to me.

I installed Slackware 13.37 today, fresh install. I added the generic 2.6.37.6 kernel to lilo, rebooted, and ran with it. I transferred some stuff to my hard drive and installed a few things, reboot again and now I can't boot up with my kernel of choice (but I can with the huge kernel). It stops during the boot process and says
Code:
[1.785238] No filesystem could mount root, tried: romfs
[1.785342] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,1)
[1.785417] Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.37.6 #2
After that is a line that says Call Trace and several lines after that with stuff that makes no sense to me and that I don't feel like typing out, but will if it is relevant.
