Ubuntu :: Unable To Select OS After Setting Colors In Grub 2?
Apr 25, 2010
I'm using Karmic with Grub 2 (1.97b4) I have this strange problem going on and believe it might be a bug so if no resolution will file it on Launchpad. Whats happening is this:when I installed Karmic fresh a couple of months ago I never did anything with customising the Grub splash screen. I just stuck with the boring black/white and if I wanted to got to Memtest or my little used Win XP partition would just hit the down arrow when the Grub Splash appeared and go there.A couple of days ago I decided to add some custom colors to the splash screen as outlined in the Grub 2 documentation. I did this to both my desktop (Acer Aspire L100) and my laptop (Compaq) Everything looks fine except for one thing. On the desktop if I hit the down arrow (or any other key) it immediately boots the first option which of course is Karmic. It should have paused the timer and allowed me to scroll down. What this means is I can only boot Karmic at this time. This is only happening on the desktop!
I'm having difficulty setting custom ls colors in xterm. If I understand it right one can edit the system-wide file located in /etc/DIR_COLORS to modify every terminal or customize xterm; I chose xterm mostly because the other terminals I never use. Here is my .bash_profile and .bashrc respectively: if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then source ~/.bashrc fi
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then source /etc/bashrc fi
alias ls='ls --color -F' PS1='[e[1;32m][u@h:w]$[e[0m] '
When I use the login shell, the colors are different than xterm in that they are not as bright; furthermore, I marked out bold fonts in .Xresources: !xterm colors xterm*foreground: #d3d3d3 xterm*background: #000000 xterm*boldColors: false xterm*cursorBlink: true xterm*cursorColor: white xterm*loginShell: false xterm*faceName: Liberation Mono xterm*faceSize: 10
So, there must be a file around somewhere that is changing the colors between the interactive and login shells. Also, man xterm: color6 (class Color6) color7 (class Color7)
These specify the colors for the ISO-6429 extension. The defaults are, respectively, black, red3, green3, yellow3, a customizable dark blue, magenta3, cyan3 and gray90. The default shades of color are chosen to allow the colors 8-15 to be used as brighter versions. How does that get anyone anywhere with setting the color? It doesn't say what color (class) is assigned to which file specifically, thus adhering to the distribution-wide color codes. Perhaps I am making this more difficult than it should be.
How do I stop the message asking me to select a vga setting on every boot or press enter or space to see the various settings available? running slackware 13.1 on an aspire one netbook
In Fedora 14, the colors of the grub boot menu were changed. why, previous versions of the grub boot menu were always the same, that black bar on white letters.
Now suddenly in F14, it was changed to a white bar, on white letters, which is hard to see and looks stupid besides. How do I change those colors back to the old way? the black bar on white lettering?
I have been googling for this topic and I don't see anything in the docs listed for it so decided to ask here.

ok I tried it, it didn't work, I tried that exact command it gave in the article, and the colors of the grub menu did NOT change!
I just installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my iMac and it works perfectly...except for one thing. It is stuck in 8 or 16 bit color and I can't find a way to make it millions of colors. I've tried using the xorg.config...
Searched around but have not found this problem listed. I have upgraded my 9.04 installation by doing a new install of 10.04 and keeping my /home partition. I have a dual boot system with Win XP and an older version of ubuntu on another partition. The problem is that when I get the grub menu I cannot select anything other than the top option. Arrowing down it just keeps popping back up to the top option. I can hold the arrow key and it will go down through all the selections but just pops back up to the top if I let go.
If I press "e" to try and edit in order to manually select a drive to boot to the editor comes up and I can select up and down the lines but if I try to move the cursor to the right it just snaps back to the beginning of the line.So I can't select windows XP or my old Ubuntu install, I can only boot to the new 10.04.$ grub-install -vgrub-install (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu6)
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. Under 9.10 I dual booted to Ubuntu or Vista in the grub menu. Now that I have upgraded I cannot boot to Vista. When I select the Vista option in the Grub bootloader it restarts the computer and comes back to the grub menu screen again. I have run the boot_info_script. The results are:ot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for /boot/grub. => Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive in
I used StartUp Manager in Linux to change to "0" the time GRUB shows the "Select OS screen" now I'cant choose which OS I want to boot. Since WinXP is selected as the default OS, I can only log into Windows.
I've already tried to press the UP ARROW several times when the machine starts up but has no effect and the GRUB selection screen won't show up (This used to work on a desktop PC with GRUB and dual OS's). I'm on a laptop, is there any way to get to the GRUB select OS screen again?
I'm a long time reader, first time writer. I have a question. I've been trying to do a dual boot with XP Pro SP2 and Ubuntu 9.10. When I setup everything and try to pick which OS I want to load, the GRUB freezes and won't boot/let me select anything else. I have to turn it off and then back on to only select Ubuntu or let the time run out to automatically select Ubuntu. I've got a Compaq Presario 2105 w/80gb HDD, 433.2MiB, and an AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Processor.
I just installed 10.04 and for some reason once the grub screen loads and I can pick what I want to launch (regular kernel, or rescue mode), it attempts to load and then I just get a blinking cursor. I've found that I can't load the live CD either unless I use the nomodeset flag. I read in another post that this problem should be fixed by editing the /etc/default/grub file to add the nomodeset flag, which I did via nano. However, the file also says you must run update-grub after you edit the file. I tried this and it said something like it can't find / (is /dev mounted?) The hard drive itself is mounted, so I don't know why /dev wouldn't be mounted. How can I get this problem solved so I can boot to 10.04 successfully from the hard drive? (I'm typing this from the live CD right now).
I have installed KDE as my desktop, I have managed to get XMBC working from KDE. At times it would be nice just have XMBC load automatically from boot up. I know that its possible to have XBMC load as the Desktop Enviroment.
Is it possible to have something like this setup for Grub?
1 - openSUSE - KDE (Default) 2 - openSUSE - KDE (SafeMode) 3 - openSUSE - XMBC 4 - Windows XP
If so is it also possible to get more fancy and have KDE goto a login screen and XMBC auto login?
I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot system with Windows XP very carefully. Unfortunately, though given the option to boot Windows at the grub menu, when I select it, I get an error. Booting Ubuntu on my other partition works just fine, no issues.
I also attempted to access files from the first partition in Ubuntu using gparted, but once I mounted it, all of my files were not present. I only saw manufacturer files, and many files and folders I didn't recognize.
Also, as an aside, my laptop monitor is suffering from occasional black-outs during use. Ubuntu gave me a little toolbar flag, telling me to go to a website and use the patches given to fix it, but I'm not quite so sure where to input the given patch text. Do I really need to go through the trouble of finding the source code, etc., or is it more simple?
I know that there is a nice little launcher that will run the script for Grub to select a menu option upon shutdown for a reboot [URL]
I however would like to use this from Windows XP and have grub select menu item 2 during a reboot. Does anyone know if there is any way to set Grub commands from within Windows?
I have a dual boot system (Linux and Windows) that I normally run headless and which boots by default into Linux (which is what I use mainly). This all works fine, except that on occasions when I want to boot Windows I have to plug in a keyboard and monitor just to select Windows in the initial grub boot screen. I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this ? I don't mind if I have to boot Linux first, I just want to be able to reboot into Windows occasionally without having to plug in any peripherals.
I have an arbiter which determines and manages a lab. I am wondering if it's possible to remotely control the grub boot selection. Right now I have to wait for the nodes to boot, check the hostname and then rsync the new grub configuration and reboot the node, it's VERY timely so I am wondering if there is an alternative to this method?
On my system (Ubuntu 9.x -> 10.x) I have always had the problem of not being able to select the edges of a window in order to change the window size. It seems that the 'hot' zone, which defines the window border selection area, is only 1 pixel wide. I find it very difficult to position the mouse pointer over this zone. Even if I am successful (which usually takes more than 20 tries), as soon as I begin to depress the mouse button, the merest movement causes the pointer to move off the 'hot' zone - and selection fails. The only work-around I have found is to select a corner point of a window -which seems much less sensitive - and then drag the window border in either a vertical or horizontal direction, rather than diagonally. But this is counter-intuitive and unsatisfactory.
I have installed Windows 7 and Debian in my Laptop. The problem is that when I get to the Grub Menu, If I select Windows 7,and then I turn off my pc, Grub dissapears and I can't no longer enter any OS. Every time this happens I have to re-install the Grub through a live CD. (This doesn't happen if I use Debian, but sometimes I must enter Windows to play games or anything like that hehe)
If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.
I have just tryed to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto a USB to install on a netbook. I used the software recomended to prep the USB and booted to it.
In the opening menu where you can select to install on a partition I am unable to press enter, it seems to just reset the menu. The keyboard seems to be working fine because I can use the arrow keys.
I have been unable to find a solution to this problem online, all I have found is this simular issue, with no resolution.

The netbook I am using is the Samsung n220 which apparently works well with ubuntu.
I am attempting to put a SystemRecoveryCD ISO onto a USB drive by using a shell script that is bundled with the ISO file (usb_inst.sh). When I run this script, I am presenting with a dialog box with a blue background (see attachment) with two options: <OK> and <Cancel>. I am able to switch between the options by using the arrow keys and Tab, but if I try to select an option by pressing Enter, O, or C, a new terminal line appears (as in the attachment), preventing me from selecting anything in the dialog. I feel like I'm not doing something extremely obvious;
I'm currently trying to use preseed to build an ubuntu server box over the network. I'm using the netboot.tar.gz from the karmic main mirror. By default it installs the standard kernel (linux-2.6.31-16-generic), and I want to use the server kernel (the metapackage linux-server which should install linux-image-2.6.31-16-server). I'm using a minimal build:
Code: tasksel tasksel/first multiselect minimal As far as I can see all the other preseed settings are close to defaults. I've tried setting both of the following lines (separately and together) with no effect: Code: d-i base-installer/kernel/image string linux-server d-i base-installer/kernel/override-image string linux-server Once the machine is built, if I run:
I had downloaded Debian 8.2 (Jessie) below files all are checksum passed. During installation after the 'Select and install software' stage the process halts and unable to proceed further.
I get the following error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation step failed An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again from the menu,or skip it and choose something else. The failing step is: Install the system. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just updated my system, not sure which package may have caused this, here are the outputs:

just installed Fedora 15 on my system alongside Ubuntu 10.10 on My 500 GB hard disk. However on starting the computer the Fedora 15 partition gets loaded automatically. How do I access my Ubuntu 10.10 partiion? I want to have a choice at start-up which OS to use. On my previous computer when I used to have Windows and Ubuntu,a menu used to appear asking which operating system to load.
I appear to be unable to select individual updates for installation anymore from the Yast Online update screen. I use this to install updates manually on 11.1. But everytime I think I've chosen an update to install, all the updates listed get installed, and not just the one I've chosen. For example I just chose a "Fuse security update" to install and clicked the "Install" button. Nothing further happens until I click "Apply". Then all patches listed under the "All available" listing get applied. How do I just apply the patches that I want to ?
I have done a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 on my oem intel machine. After the installation, the screen resolution is stuck at 800x600.I am unable to select a higher screen resolution.
Am carrying out installation of CentOS-5.5 on a Sun fire X2270 server using PXE. The installation starts well but on getting to the keyboard type the installation halts. I have plugged in a USB keyboard unfortunately, am unable to select the keyboard type even on reboot as the keyboard is non-responsive.
I switched our main fileserver to new hardware running RHEL 4 Update 8 yesterday. Post the switch my users are finding that the text in the boxes on taskbars at the bottom of their desktop screens no longer truncates but spills over onto that of other boxes, making them extremely hard to decipher.
All our desktops are RHEL 4.8 too. Also, I'm only able to select PNGs as desktop wallpaper - JPEG backgrounds just appear as plain white when selected(!) Has anyone seen this before and knows of a fix?
I have recently zypper dupped to opensuse 11.4 from 11.3. My only problem is I am unable to access my address book when I click <select> when sending a new message; only recent addresses show in the window that pops up. Even if I select <all> in the list of choices, only <recent addresses> show up. In the useful tips that appear upon opening K-mail it states that if I click on < folders> then < Mailing list management> I will be able to select and manage all of my address books. But when I click on <folders> the <mailing list management> is faded telling me that it is not enabled. My question is what must I do to enable the mailing list management to be enabled? I have enabled mailman with no help.
