Slackware :: DSL Connection In Slackware 13.37
May 2, 2011
Today,I installed slackware 13.37 on my system and frankly speaking,it feels great to have slack machine. And indeed, I was waiting for this release as 13.1 doesn't support my Atheros ar8151 NIC.But 13.37 has a module for my NIC(atl1c) and i verified by "lsmod | grep atl1c".But i won't be able to connect to the internet even after running "pppoe-setup" and "netconfig" too."/etc/rc.d/rc.modules" file doesn't have "/sbin/modprobe atl1c" entry.Running "pppoe-start" after "pppoe-setup" shows interface connected but in browser no access, not for the ping.

I've got a problem which drives me crazy. There is a website I am unable to connect (and a server). This problem appears only when I am workin at home, using my wifi network with my wifi router. Why am I becoming mad? I have four other systems: W2000, WXP, OpenBSD, Debian, they all use the same wifi router for a connection and there is no problem at all. It is not related to that particular computer cause eg. OpenBSD is installed on the same computer, it uses the same wifi card (so no some kind of a MAC filtration on the side of the router) and working on OpenBSD I can connect. For me it seems that accidentally I set some kind of a wall in the Slackware. But where and how? Where should I look for some filters or settings which may cause such strange behaveour?
Let me be clear: it is only about that particular site, I have an internet connection, I can google, I can do all thing, but I'm unable to connect to exactly this one site. Yeah, you know I always said that all companies should employee me as a super alfa tester. I'm able to broke everything. No system is secure when I'm working on it.

I have downloaded and copied slackware 13.1 on to a disk, and rebooted the computer, but i am not getting what all the tutorials have shown. I have been looking for tutorials that specifically instruct me as to how to install slackware 13.1 on to a windows xp. I am not trying to dual run I just simply want to run slackware and slackware only.

I have a fresh install of Slackware 13.1 on my Samsung N150 plus. I've been fiddling around with it for a couple of days trying to get the wireless to work. Below are the network controllers of my laptop.
05:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
I included wireless and wired, not sure it would help or not. After many Google searches on the subject I installed and setup Wicd. I am able to get a wired connection but not a wireless. I can see other networks, I am unable to connect to them though. Also when I installed Slackware I didn't setup the network. The Readme for Wicd said that having a network configured can mess it up. But is having no network set up worse. I know there is easier way to setup wireless networks, I just cant figure it out.

My wife takes her laptop on her travels but recently has been getting a connection refused when attempting to connect to our home server. The only reason I believe this is occurring is because of iptables blocking certain IP addresses which I don't want to delete for SPAM prevention.
What configuration what be both secure and relatively straight forward. Initially configured mac filtering but then realised this would not be appropriate under these circumstances..
Also there is no specific logging in either postfix or dovecot about connection refused.

I installed Wicd from the Slackware DVD and was successfully connecting to the internet for the past few weeks.I do not know if the following caused my problem or if it is something else that I did:All of a sudden (probably something that I did) the wpa_gui screen started to appear on my desktop. I just closed it.Today, in a moment of stupidity, I said "Who needs this wpa-gui thingy?! I know, I'll just use pkgtool to uninstall it. Then, if I need it, I'll just use pkgtool to reinstall it!" So, I did. After my next reboot, you guessed it, no wireless.
Wicd seems to do everything it used to do, except connect. I get the error msg "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address." I see my 'connection' listed and it is still set to "Automatically connect to this network" but it doesn't.So, is it the wpa-gui app that I 'uninstalled' or is it something else that I might have done?

I am trying to connect to the net wirelessly using Slax off my USB stick. I did the best I could using the wireless configure tool but Firefox will not surf - no connection. The configure tool shows that I am 'partly' connected in that it shows signal strength in green but I noticed that there is no entry for IP address. Am I suppose to know this and enter it? In LMDE, I see the IP as 192.168.2.10 and other addresses. Do I need to enter this stuff?

Is it possible to upgrade a Slackware installation from a freshly d-loaded DVD? How would one go about this? Would the procedures in the Upgrade.txt work? I would assume they would need to be modified a bit, though, since I'm only upgrading the same version of Slackware. I'm not going from say 13.1 to 13.37. I just want to update a 13.37 current that I installed about three weeks ago to the now final release 13.37. If I could get my silly Trendnet TEW 423IP wireless PCI card to work in Slack, I could upgrade the normal way with Slackpkg.

in the LQ Forums i am experiencing a few connection issues under Slackware 13.1 and came here after lots of searching, and unsuccessful fixes so here it is.
- Problem: I can't join multiplayer matches in various games (Running natively in Linux) some of these are: Open Arena, Urban Terror, Cube 2: Sauerbraten, Quake Live and Planeshift.
- What i did: I tried joining multiplayer matches in these (and a few other) games without success, i get the server list, it says it is connecting and in most of these i get the message: Awaiting Gamestate (except for Planeshift which just fails and Cube 2 that doesn't show anything). Didn't find a fix in the internet and tried some possible ones without success. I even tried forwarding ports on my router/modem, turning on and off UPnP, setting up a firewall and nothing.
- Exceptions: I tried one of these games in my Windows XP 32-bit boot and the same game (Urban Terror) worked, same version number (but the native Windows version) and i could play without lag and any other issue. Cube 2: Sauerbraten manages to connect and lets me play (under Slack) but only on some servers maybe a port or authentication problem i guess. As said the only message is Awaiting Gamestate in every game except for Cube 2 that doesn't show anything and just doesn't connects and Planeshift that says it wasn't able to reach the server. This Slackware install is pretty fresh i installed it day 1 of January 2011 with the additional packages during the installation and the only firewall which i set up today was a IPTABLES one generated here but the issues are present since the day i installed Slack (but only in it) the problem persists with and without the firewall.
As far as i remember i didn't have these issues when i installed Ubuntu so i guess it's a configuration that's lacking. I am connected to the internet through a router (with wireless enabled for my notebook) with a cable (eth0), DHCP, Dynamic IP. - Notes: I installed the PCMCIA thing during the installation and i CAN use the internet (browsing, pidgin, e-mail, .....) normally. Sorry if i wrote too much i tried to give as much information as possible and sorry for any grammar errors, English is not my first language.

it's possible to compile the 2.6.37 kernel patched with the autogroup patch on a Slackware 13.1 system running 2.6.33.4-smp with 2.6.33.4 headers? I just compiled and installed the 2.6.37-autogroup kernel from AUR on my ARCH setup and I like it especially when using firefox with lots of tabs open and other background apps also running. I did notice a speed and smothness difference in my ARCH testing setup with this kernel patch and I can get same results in 13.1??

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

I'm happy to announce Linvo 2009.1 rc6. It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It can open all types of file formats. It's a LiveCD, which means that you can test it without installing and after this optionally install it - it has a nice easy graphical installer.
It's the first Slackware-based LiveCD distribution with GNOME by default. It includes NetworkManager and initng in place of sysvinit. It also features accessibility tools. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. However, after this, the speed of the application is limited by the speed of your connection, of course. Check out the "Applications" section on the website.
Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. It also contains src2pkg and sbopkg in case you want to compile something from source or existing SlackBuild Depfinder is included to find dependencies of packages. Click here for a guide on how to use those. I also managed to put development tools in there, like GCC, G++, svn, cvs, so on... This is a release candidate, and despite that it's OK for using. It has a bit more things to do until the release (like language selection on the boot menu), but I decided that it's important to put it here for testing.

We are pleased to present one of our new creations: pkgbuild, a tool written in standard C++, using libCURL, ZLib, BZip2 and libLZMA (part of XZ). It is a modern Slackware packages builder, network-transparent, multi-architecture, designed to greatly simplify the creation of a package, automatically executing the required post processing.
What does it do? Recognize and build packages for the following architectures: i386, i486, i586, i686, x86_64, IA64, IA32e, s390, s390x, sparc and sparc64.

I noticed that the official Slackware packages don't contain static libraries. The SlackBuild scripts from slackbuilds.org or from Slackware DVD usually contain --disable-static option to prevent building the .a file. And if configure script doesn't allow such option, the .a file is deleted before the package is created.I am wondering what is the reason for that? Is it just the matter of conserving disk space? Are there also other reasons?
