Slackware :: Failed To Initialize NVIDIA Graphics Device On Startx With Slackware 13.1

Aug 24, 2010

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.

Slackware - 13.1 "VLC Failed To Initialize Sound Output Device" If Opened After Firefox

Aug 7, 2010

I've been having a recurring problem on Slackware64 13.1. If I open VLC (or any other media player available for Slackware) before I open Firefox, then my sound works 100% and there's never any problem, however, if I open Firefox first, and there happens to be a flash video loading, then any other media player (mplayer-plugin, Amarok or VLC) will fail to play sound. VLC tells me:

Quote: Potential ALSA version problem: VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any). update alsa-lib to version 1.0.24 or higher to try to fix this issue. Now, I'm happy to do that if it will actually fix the problem, though I'll have to figure out how seeing as I'm something of a n00b. The thing is that I've not really done anything to alsa except run alsaconf on my first boot, so I'm not sure if that's really the problem I've been using Slackware64 for a few months now, I'm on my first ever install and for the most part I'm loving it. Been working through the little things that have been annoying me, and for the most part I've managed to find solutions either by reading the Slackbook, by browsing LQ or by doing a quick Google search. However, I can't seem to find any reference to this specific problem anywhere and I'm not sure what I should do.

Slackware :: 64 Multi-lib And Nvidia Graphics?

Aug 13, 2010

I'm just about to install Alien Bob's multi-lib packages for Slackware64. Everything looks easy, but I've got a question about this part of the instructions:

Quote:

After installing the -compat32 packages, you may have to re-install your binary Nvidia or Ati video X.Org drivers. These driver packages contain both 64bit and 32bit libraries to be maximally useful on a 64bit multilib OS. If you installed the driver files for both architectures, the mesa-compat32 package will overwrite some of the 32bit library files.

On the other hand, if you originally only installed the 64bit driver libraries for your Nvidia/Ati card, it is recommended after installation of the multilib packages, to re-install the binary driver package. This time, choose to install the 32bit driver files as well.

The graphical 32bit applications that you are going to run on your multilib installation will require these 32bit driver libraries. Crashes are likely to occur if you fail to install the correct files.

Right now, I'm on pure 64-bit Slackware64-13.1, and I'm using the Nvidia driver from Slackbuilds.org (along with the nvidia-kernel and libvdpau packages from there too).

So:Do I have both 32- and 64- bit bindary drivers installed as part of the package from Slackbuilds.org?
Could I avoid all this hassle by simply not installing the mesa-compat32 package?
If I do need to reinstall the Nvidia binary driver, do I just upgradepkg --reinstall nvidia-driver-195.36.15-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz?

Slackware :: Nvidia Graphics In Slack - Curent?

Apr 15, 2010

I am using nvidia fx 5500 graphic card and still have unresolved problems with graphic. At this moment I cannot set X window system to work properly. My first attempt after installing slack -current was to install nvidia's 'blob' driver. As it is know 'blob' conflicts with 'noveau' open source driver for nvidia cards. 'Blob' cannot install with noveau running. Thus I blacklisted 'noveau' and installed the 'blob'. After I restarted the computer it seemed it is Ok, but 1) it is really very hard to set the proper value of gamma correction, contrast and brightnest, 2) after logout the X server didn't restart and computer was 'dumb'.

I have some prerequisites to suspect the 'nv' X.org native driver for bugs, but I tested and driver is ok, however it is impossible to work wit this driver, it can only accomplish 60 Hz V. refresh,

Additionally: in fact I have to graphic devices - nvidia on AGP and VIA graphic onboard card (VT1344). BIOS points to AGP as primary graphic device.

Slackware :: 3D Acceleration With NVidia 8500GT PCI-E Graphics Card - Error: Couldn't Find RGB GLX Visual Or Fbconfig

Oct 20, 2010

I have a Slackware 13.1/64-current system running the 2.6.35.6 kernel that I have installed the most recent nvidia drivers for (as of yesterday or day before) 260.19.12. If I boot up into run level 4 after running nvidia-xconfig in a console and run glxinfo as root I get:

Quote:

bash-4.1# glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

If I edit /etc/profile or /home/username/.bash_profile and add the following:

Quote:

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=X

I have set both X=0 and X=1 as reported by [URL] I get the screen of information except it says

Quote:

direct rendering: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT set)

my lspci -v for the graphics card looks like this:

05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8500 GT] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: XFX Pine Group Inc. Device 2353

I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Keep Getting 'Failed To Initialize NVIDIA Kernel Module'

Oct 3, 2010

Every time I start up my Ubuntu 10.04 install, instead of the graphical login screen, I get an error dialog stating the following:

Code:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
Also in the dialog are several lines of text:

Code:
(EE) <date and time> Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module. Please see the system's kernel log for additional error messages and consult the NVIDIA README for details. ***Aborting*** Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.I'm not sure what it means by "kernel log," or where any error logs might be saved. Any tips? Perhaps if I can find such error logs, posting them will help diagnose the problem.

If it matters, I have 2 monitors, an NEC AccuSync 120 CRT and a Samsung BX2440X LCD. I use them in Xinerama mode with the Nvidia drivers under my Ubuntu 9.10 install and have no problems there. To get normal graphics under 10.04, I have to start up in low-graphics mode, kill X server, reinstall the Nvidia proprietary drivers, and restart the X server. Then I have to do it all over again after the next restart, every time I want to run 10.04.It's very annoying. Also possibly relevant: I use the latest 32-bit Nvidia drivers for 10.04, version 256.53.I've found a few other threads where people had problems similar to this, but nothing exactly like my situation nor any real resolution so far. I hope it can be fixed, because there are other things about 10.04 that I really like.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 9.10 AMD Crashes: NVIDIA Failed To Initialize The GLX Module?

I'm running ubuntu 9.10 64 bit (2.6.31-20-generic) on a Z600 HP. My graphics card is Nvidia quadro NVS450. I am using the Ubuntu Nvidia driver 185.18.36. After installing the crash dump packages I am now getting a crash dump file and it's clear the problem relates to my graphics card.

I have had this error for way too long. This post will be done in parts. I've had it for months now and I'd like to solve it. After I finish loading in low graphics mode I have to run "sudo nvidia-xconfig". Then, the next reboot the graphics card driver is loaded properly. Debian Hardware :: Video Card - Failed To Initialize NVidia Kernel Module

Aug 9, 2011

I am trying to get my Debian system running. I have an older Dell Precision 490 with two dual core CPUs. It has 16G Ram, an 150G Intel solid state drive, a 230G data drive, and a 600G backup drive. I have two Samsung monitors attached to the NVIDIA Geforce FX 5xx card. I have been using this machine for several years with Etch, then Lenny, running KDE 3.5. I recently needed to upgrade to Squeeze and KDE4 and have had nothing but problems since. I keep having issues with the video drivers, every time I touch anything the drivers seem to upgrade from the legacy 173 to the current 195.

There have been other library compatibility issues as well (gclib) and the machine has not been stable. This morning the system was running very slowly with X running at 100% (from top) and then the entire system froze. After a hard reboot, X did restart. The Xorg.0.log has the following message:
"Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly..."

Still the damn thing installed 2.6.32.x. anyway, ran lilo to take notice of the change, and rebooted. booted allright, only when i Init 4, it failed to startx. new kernel, new mods needed to be loaded, i picked my DVD with drivers, and tried to run the Nvidia proprietary installer...

It uninstalled the previous driver and started compiling a new kernel module..I had the previous DVD installer of Slackware64 Current, as well as my private repo of packages, either built by me with src2pkg or makepkg, or from slackbuilds, I had my /home partition mounted apart, so i regenerated my system in about one hour...
