When launching any program (iceweasel, ssh, dropbox) that requires internet connection as a normal user it does not connect.

Ubuntu Security :: Windows Users Using The Same Connection?

Jan 6, 2011

Thought about posting in the Networking board, but I believe this is a much more security-oriented thread. So let's say I bring my computer to a public place, say a library with one open, public, shared wireless network. I connect to that network. Let's assume that everyone else who's connected is using Windows. Can they see my computer (through Network Manager or other software) and attack it (SYN flood or something)? Or does it depend on the network settings?

Fedora :: Network-manager Looses Connection When 'Allow All Users' Is On

Sep 17, 2010

I have an issue with network-manager. When I edit my wireless settings and enable 'Allow all users' (I have a german locale so I don't know the exact words but I guess it's close enough) the connection drops and doesn't reconnect. If I click on the wlan access point manually (in the nm-applet) it asks for my WPA pass. This is odd since it was already in the wlan settings.

Then when I reset the 'Allow ...' to off, I'm asked for my su passwd and the connection is re-established. Ideally the nm would connect automatically at boot if the AP is available so I'm not happy with the current state...

Ubuntu :: Gmail Users Please Post Connection Information

Aug 30, 2010

I have an issue in Gmail that has just started recently. When I'm logged into Gmail I sometimes have as many as 22-28 outbound connections and my NIC never stops sending and receiving data. When I log into Gmail this starts and doesn't stop even if I log out and close the tab. I have to quit the browser to lose the connections.

I had a thread URL... that initially was about this issue but I didn't know it seemed to be totally Gmail related so I thought I might ask this way. It could be Google just changed something on their end but I don't want to run my mail until I know it's ok.

Software :: Bash-script : Start A User A's Process From Other Users?

Aug 26, 2010

A Tomcat server is installed under user A. Now I am going to write a script which will start this Tomcat server. And this script can be executed from other users (from there account). And if other user run this script, the process ID should be of user A, so that user A can start or stop this process any time. This means, at the beginning of the script I have set the process ID as user A. How to do this?

Slackware :: Enabling Compiz In Another Users On Same PC ?

Jun 20, 2010

I have installed compiz in slakcware 13.1 32 bit. i enable compiz in KDE + emerald (until this step, i didn't encounter a problem). But after i want to enable compiz in same PC and same OS but different username, the window decoration show same problem, it's missing !

That problem occur when i use KDE (it's same window manager that i use to install compiz in the first user). but if the second user use XFCE and i enable compiz + emerald, it's weird...it didn't show any problem...it's perfect.

But the problem is, if the second user want to use KDE desktop and enable compiz...that problem occur again...

This is my xorg-vesa.conf

I'm using VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Slackware :: Getting Crontabs For Users To Work?

Sep 3, 2010

My crontabs under root are working fine, but I can't seem to get my user crontabs to work.

When I do a crontab -l -u <user>, I get a listing of the crontab file, but it never is executed.

I've been reading about cron.allow and cron.deny, but I can't find those in the slackware distro. Is there something special that I need to do to allow user crontabs in Slackware? (version 13.1 if that helps)

Slackware :: How To Allow Regular Users To Shutdown?

Mar 10, 2010

My home computer is (of course) a multi-user system with my wife and I each having separate non-root accounts. Usually at the end of the day I exit X, drop down to the terminal, su to root and type

Code:
shutdown -h now
to turn the computer off for the night.

However, my wife doesn't know (or care to know) the root password, but she would like to be able to shutdown the computer.I tried making a /etc/shutdown.allow file, and typing

Code:
/sbin/shutdown -a -h now from her account, but it didn't work. I got an error that one has to be root to do that.

So, how do I allow regular users to shutdown?

Slackware :: How Did Users Install New Packages And Their Libraries

May 28, 2011

I'm reading the 3rd official handbook in beta version and I learn that the automated tool "slackpkg" exists only since Slackware 12.1.Before that, how did users install new packages and their libraries ? Did they search each package with their web browsers and then install manually? For me, it seems tedious because I usually work with distributions like Fedora, Debian which use an online package management. Is there another way to download it from console and without web browser?

Security :: Kerberos And LDAP - Users Will Be Able To Login In To A Server On The Edge Of The LAN And Establish A SSH Connection

Feb 19, 2010

I am trying to deploy Kerberos and LDAP so users will be able to login in to a server on the edge of the LAN, and afterwards be able to establish a SSH connection to all the computers in that LAN without the need to type any passwords, and without the need for me to manage SSH keys [beside the SSH keys on the login server] and local user accounts.

1. When i create the users in OpenLDAP i use a template that i created by reading documentation from the Internet. In the template one piece of information that is neede is the UID. Is there any clever way the keep track of the numbers so i do not assign the same UID to two users, besides using a pen and paper?

2. For the users to be able to establish SSH connections between the computers, the host is going to be added to the keytab like this: ktadd host/client.example.com Is is possible to replace client with something genric so i do not need to mange these keytab files between the hosts?

3. Users will be logging on the the server on the edge of LAN by using SSH keys. How can i configure the setup so the users will recieve a ticket automatically when the logon without executing kinit and without entering a password, just by having a valid SSH key?

4. krb5kdc is running on all the network interfaces in the server i want it to only run on eth1, how can this be done?

General :: Start Up A Net Connection With Pure Terminal?

Mar 26, 2010

I type in ifconfig eth0 up, it says Device not found.

Sys: Fedora12, ethnet, laptop.

When I can get in X, I can manage my network with network-management, or with gnome-terminal. In X, I can start a net with "ifconfig eth0 up", when I type in "ip link", It shows like

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP qlen 1000
link/ether 00:26:22:de:c0:94 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: wlan0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:26:c6:4f:79:2a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

BUT right now, I get problems with X and can't get in it. I want to start a net connection in pure terminal and work with it. However, it replys "Device not found" to "ifconfig eth0 up". Answer to "ip link" was lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00 and no more. Where is my eth0 then? Ubuntu Networking :: Start Network Connection Before Login ?

Feb 18, 2010

I've got a Kubuntu Karmic install that I ssh into on a frequent basis. It stays running 24/7, but sometimes the power goes out, etc. and it reboots.

The thing is, when it reboots, before I log in to KDE, there is no network connection. It is only after I log into KDE that nm-applet (I use the GNOME one because it works better than KNetworkManager) makes the connection and gets an IP address. And it does so completely automatically...no customizations by me. If I try to connect manually (sudo ifup eth0) before log in, I don't get an IP address.

How can I get it to connect to the network and get an IP address at boot, before I touch it?
