General :: Slackware 13.37 - How To Get My Wireless Connection To Work
Jul 22, 2011
After deciding to get into Linux and start learning the secrets of it, I decided to install it on my laptop. Now I have a small problem. How can I get my wireless connection to work on it? I have read few guides and tips on the internet regarding the iwconfig and the rc.wireless_conf files, but it didn't get me anywhere. I have Slackware 13.37

I am fairly new to linux and I just bought a new computer. I have a dell inspiron N4010 and I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it. I then was unable to connect with a wired connection or wireless. I am sure this is a driver issue I just don't know how to get the proper drivers. If I put my mouse over the wireless icon it says networking disabled. But the switch to enable networking is on the keyboard

how to get my wireless connection to work on the network. I don't see anywhere to go to see if the wireless adapter is even setup in Fedora. My other question is when I boot up and get the options to select the OS the first one is Fedora but the other one says it is other.
I think that is is booting up the recovery partion of Windows. I don't know how to change it so that it is looking at the correct portition. I know it has something to do with the menu.lst file but when I try to open it says that I do not have premission. I am not sure where to go to edit it.

I have a fresh install of Slackware 13.1 on my Samsung N150 plus. I've been fiddling around with it for a couple of days trying to get the wireless to work. Below are the network controllers of my laptop.
05:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
I included wireless and wired, not sure it would help or not. After many Google searches on the subject I installed and setup Wicd. I am able to get a wired connection but not a wireless. I can see other networks, I am unable to connect to them though. Also when I installed Slackware I didn't setup the network. The Readme for Wicd said that having a network configured can mess it up. But is having no network set up worse. I know there is easier way to setup wireless networks, I just cant figure it out.

Code:
ra0 2 key sizes: 40, 104bits
4 keys available

[2]: off
[3]: off
[4]: off

I installed Wicd from the Slackware DVD and was successfully connecting to the internet for the past few weeks.I do not know if the following caused my problem or if it is something else that I did:All of a sudden (probably something that I did) the wpa_gui screen started to appear on my desktop. I just closed it.Today, in a moment of stupidity, I said "Who needs this wpa-gui thingy?! I know, I'll just use pkgtool to uninstall it. Then, if I need it, I'll just use pkgtool to reinstall it!" So, I did. After my next reboot, you guessed it, no wireless.
Wicd seems to do everything it used to do, except connect. I get the error msg "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address." I see my 'connection' listed and it is still set to "Automatically connect to this network" but it doesn't.So, is it the wpa-gui app that I 'uninstalled' or is it something else that I might have done?

I am trying to connect to the net wirelessly using Slax off my USB stick. I did the best I could using the wireless configure tool but Firefox will not surf - no connection. The configure tool shows that I am 'partly' connected in that it shows signal strength in green but I noticed that there is no entry for IP address. Am I suppose to know this and enter it? In LMDE, I see the IP as 192.168.2.10 and other addresses. Do I need to enter this stuff?

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Extensia lap top. Thinking about re-installing for two reasons:
1. I can't get the wireless connection to work. It did on the earlier version -- 9.
2. it kept all my previous installs even though I only asked them to save one other OS that I need. The second problem I could live with, though I wouldn't mind having the space that is used on these systems I don't want.
So, should I go back to an earlier version of Ubuntu? If I do re-install can I use the "specify partitions manually" option and get rid of the extra OSs? I'm not exactly a beginner, but neither am I an "expert." Don't want to get into highly technical fixes.
PS I think it may be a compatibility issue with Acer, as I use 10.04 on a dell and don't have the wireless problem. Do I need a driver?

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted. Now I can not connect to my home wireless internet, so I can't re-enable third party software sources. I am currently using a different computer, so I know that our internet works. I checked the wireless switch on my laptop, and it says that wireless is enabled. I've rebooted, and it still doesn't work. I tried our wired internet, and that didn't work either (although I'm not sure if our wired internet works; we haven't used it in a few years)

I just installed Ubuntu on my windows pc with no problems....except for wireless that is. I have a USB Linksys WUSB54G adapter to access my 2WIRE, WEP network. The thing is, it shows up in the top right hand corner. It even gives me the signal strength. But when it comes to using Mozilla, it is never able to access a page. If I try to Ping something, it's unable to. So I thought maybe I need to use ndiswrapper with my .inf and .sys files from the driver for my windows. I installed it, and added the driver to it...everything went O.K. I check it and it says it's installed and working. Again, I can see the wireless networks, and "connect" but when I try to use the connection there is nothing. I have also tried my neighbours non-WEP connection, but it still doesn't work. So I'm sort of at a loss with what I should do now. I see the networks, can "connect" but can't browse. I installed the drivers from my windows, and it still doesn't work. I used a LIVE CD of Knoppix and I can connect to the Network within 30 seconds and start browsing the net.

I am not able to connect to a wireless network with the HP mini 110 series. When going to the wireless network menu, no networks shows up. if the solution could be described in a very easy "how-to" or just be made into a patch (if there is pathes on ubuntu) it would be nice.
System specifications from HP:

I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. I have mastered how to get info from the terminal but how the heck to you edit a file? How do you get to that stage?

So I recently installed Slackware 13.1 and now want to get my D-Link DWA-140 to work with it. However I'm quite an amateur at Linux and can't seem to figure out how to. After following many different how-tos and tutorials this is where I am: I got 2010_0709_RT2870_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.1 (supposedly USB driver)package and rt2870.bin (supposedly firmware) in my root catalog. What I have already done with them:
make & make install in 2010_0709~
blacklisting modules 2x00usb, 2x00lib, 2800usb
modprobe rt2870sta
copying rt2870.bin to /lib/firmware
Regardless of everything, my adapter still is not active.. and how can I make the OS load the module at startup?

My area does not have broadband, but I am able to get 3G on my cell phone. So, I've been tethering it to my laptop when needed, but what I'd like to do is set up my Slackware 13.0 box (which is configured to run as firewall/router/dhcp server so that I can just turn on my phone's wireless router program, and then share it out over the whole network in my house. I'm using a Gigabyte b/g wireless card, which has the RT61 chipset in it. I have NO problems at all getting the wireless card to work with just setting up rc.inet1.conf. The only problem here is when I need to take my cell phone with me, I will not be able to simply turn it back into a WAP, and have my Slackware box auto reconnect to it.
This is why I started looking into using WICD. I do NOT run X, so that's why WICD fits the bill, since it has a cli version. First I tried installing the version that came on the CD. No dice there. I removed that package, and tried the 1.7 package that's on the mirrors under current. I used slackpkg to install it. WICD will run, see wlan0, sees my WAP and a few others, but it fails to connect. It attempts to up the interface, and use dhcp to get an ip, but it fails everytime. My phone's WAP program only does WEP, but I can't get WICD to get an IP with our without WEP enabled. I made sure that my rc.inet1.conf file does not reference any interfaces.

Each time I start up debian -lenny, the network-manager does not automatically connect me to my wireless network. The connection list shows a lot of networks available, but mine is always absent from the list. This means I each time have to go to "Connect to other Wireless Network" in and write in my network name (SSID) and password (PWA2 Personal). Then is connects nicely and everything works fine until next time I boot

I have a Slackware 13.1 install on a Desktop PC with wireless keyboard and mouse. When I log in it takes a very long time(5 minutes or so) before the keyboard starts working, and f.ex. it's possible to do Alt-F2. The mouse also works slowly in this period, but it is working.
I'm running KDE 4.5.2 on Slackware current, but did have the same problems with the fresh install and KDE4.5.1. When the lag period is over everything is working as normal. I have turned of strigi indexing and could not find anything special when running "ps ax" or "top".
