Now I see something like:

Code:

Slackware :: How To Remove Dhcpcd At Startup

Sep 28, 2010

For some reasons, dhcdpd wouldn't connect eth0 at startup and it takes 10 to 15 seconds of timeout. Since I don't really care because I use wifi, I would like to remove auto dhcpcd at startup but I can't fint it anywhere in /etc/rc.*.

Slackware :: Change Dhcpcd To Dhclient In Startup Scripts?

Jan 13, 2011

I recently upgraded to a Intel i3 cpu and Intel H55 motherboard. This was from an old P4 machine that was running Slackware 13.0. The machine is a single connection to the internet through a cable modem. I moved the hard drives over, and found that dhcpcd would not work with this board in either Slackware 13.0 or 13.1 (after updating). I tried both the Gigabit onboard Lan, an old PCI ethernet card and installing the most recent version of dhcpcd. No luck. Dhcpcd would negotiate the lease with my cable modem, assign an IP address. But after that the process stalled. The internet was unreachable, and no nameservers were printed in /etc/resolv.conf. Manually killing dhcpcd and entering: "dhclient -4 eth0" got me on the internet without a problem. As this appears to be a lingering problem with dhcpcd, I am going to try to use dhclient permanently. Has anyone else moved over to using dhclient? If you have modified your startup scripts in /etc/rc.d to use dhclient.

Networking :: Wireless On Slack 12.2 Used To Work Now DHCPCD Times Out

Jul 14, 2011

I know questions of the form "wireless not working on <blank>" abound, but here is another! I can't cut and paste since I don't have a connection on the computer I am having trouble with but I will paraphrase the best I can.

lspci output:
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel ... PRO/wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)
lsmod output (relavent line):
cfg80211 33680 3 iwlagn, iwlcore, mac80211

iwconfig shows wlan0 up and running, and iwlist scanning shows the router. I used to be able to just run dhcpcd wlan0 and connect, but now I get a

"timed out waiting for a valid DHCP server response"

Same deal running /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf (which might be the new way Slack connects to things).

Not sure if it's important, but I have a little indicator light on my laptop that tells me if wireless is running. Before I try dhcpcd, the light is on. After it times out, the light goes out and I have to redo everything (ifconfig wlan0 up etc....) in order to get the light back on.

Networking :: Resetting Internet Connection

Dec 23, 2010

I was away for about a week, and on being back home I got on my notebook MAC but to find my MAC could not get to the internet! The Modem and the router were already switched on. Usually, this gave no problem. However, this time after repeated tries I was very sure something must be wrong. To cut the story short I managed to find a friend who knows another guy who is a qualified computer techy. He actually helped reset the whatever settings and upon getting it all done I asked what was the root of the problem. His explanation was "things like this does happen and we need to reset the system".

Just to make sure I will not need to bother my friend and his friend should thing like this crop up again, I really appreciate to get a guide on what you actually do to reset whatever that needs to be reset.

Slackware :: KDE Cursor Keeps Resetting To Classic

Jun 28, 2010

Yesterday, my mouse cursor in KDE/Qt apps suddenly changed. I always had the 'classic' theme set in systemsettings, and that resulted in a standard pointy arrow cursor. Yesterday, however, as soon as i logged on I had a weird 'triangle with a circle cut out' cursor. In systemsettings, it says this is "KDE Classic Cursor", 'the default cursor for KDE2 and KDE3'. I personally find it rather horrid, so I changed it. However, When I exit X and log back in, the 'classic' cursor is back. No matter which alternative cursor I choose, it only lasts for that session, although the cursor I actually selected is shown highlichted in systemsettings... I have tried deleting my .kde to no avail.

The only change I made before this started happening was adding a line to my .xinitrc to enable a menu called 'yeahlauch' which is part of yeahwm (Although I use xmonad as a WM and no desktop environment, so these cursor troubles happen only in KDE/Qt apps). EDIT: I have tried commenting out the new line and the problem persists.

Slackware :: Can't Figure Out How To Get Wireless Running

Apr 28, 2011

so I know this is probably one of the most asked questions from Slackware noobs, but i can't seem to find an acceptable answer to this question. How to get wireless networking, working under Slackware linux.I know the tools i should be using(ifconfig, iwconfig) but I have no idea how to use them. I know the init script that I need to edit but I'm not to sure where to get the information it requires, such as the ESSID.I am running 13.1 64bit. I know that the wireless network I want to connect to uses WPA encryption. As well I have never used Slackware before, I've had the most experience with CrunchBang, the problem being wireless worked out of the box for that.

Slackware :: Get A Wired Connection But Not A Wireless

Dec 27, 2010

I have a fresh install of Slackware 13.1 on my Samsung N150 plus. I've been fiddling around with it for a couple of days trying to get the wireless to work. Below are the network controllers of my laptop.

05:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01) 09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller

I included wireless and wired, not sure it would help or not. After many Google searches on the subject I installed and setup Wicd. I am able to get a wired connection but not a wireless. I can see other networks, I am unable to connect to them though. Also when I installed Slackware I didn't setup the network. The Readme for Wicd said that having a network configured can mess it up. But is having no network set up worse. I know there is easier way to setup wireless networks, I just cant figure it out.

Slackware :: Broke Wireless Connection... Unable To Get IP Address?

Feb 15, 2011

I installed Wicd from the Slackware DVD and was successfully connecting to the internet for the past few weeks.I do not know if the following caused my problem or if it is something else that I did:All of a sudden (probably something that I did) the wpa_gui screen started to appear on my desktop. I just closed it.Today, in a moment of stupidity, I said "Who needs this wpa-gui thingy?! I know, I'll just use pkgtool to uninstall it. Then, if I need it, I'll just use pkgtool to reinstall it!" So, I did. After my next reboot, you guessed it, no wireless.

Wicd seems to do everything it used to do, except connect. I get the error msg "Connection Failed: Unable to get IP address." I see my 'connection' listed and it is still set to "Automatically connect to this network" but it doesn't.So, is it the wpa-gui app that I 'uninstalled' or is it something else that I might have done?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Lost It - 'wmaster0 No Wireless Extensions', But Then Refers To Wlan0 As The Wireless Connection

Mar 28, 2010

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.

Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:

1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.

2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).

3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.

Networking :: Use The Laptop With The Wireless Connection To Share The Internet Connection?

I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

OpenSUSE Network :: Dhcpcd Not Sending DHCPDISCOVER/-REQUEST At Boot, Timing Out?

Aug 2, 2010

we have a problem with dhcpcd at boot time on any openSUSE version from 11.0 to 11.3. It seems that a number of workstations never send out DHCPDISCOVER or DHCPREQUEST at boot time, we have verified this with packet dumps. The dhcp client progress bar is displayed on the console but eventually times out, goes into background and the system continues booting. This is a problem because the timeout takes a long time and users have to wait. Sometimes the display manager is even started but users cannot using LDAP authentication. Eventually these systems just continue to use their old lease and networking works.Curiously, when we do a network restart after boot, the clients send DHCPDISCOVER/-REQUEST normally, we only have this problem at boot time.

On the server side we're using ISC dhcpcd-1.3.22pl4-223.13 on SLES 10 SP2. I have read about others who had the same problem, they switched from dhcpcd to dhclient. I have also tried this, but for us dhclient is not an option for a number of other reasons. Another thing I have tried is setting DHCLIENT_SLEEP ("Some interfaces need time to initialize. Add the latency time in seconds")o two minutes to give the interface time to initialize.nfortunately this didn't change anything.
