Slackware :: New Alsa-lib Required - Sound Stopped Working
Oct 22, 2010
After updating my system today, sound stopped working. VLC said I should update alsa-lib. Slackbuilds had none to offer, so I got the sources from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page. It compiled and installed without problems, but the error from VLC states the same. Is my system the only one affected by the update, and how do I fix it?

When I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.

basically, sound will cut in and out. if i'm on videos, whenever sound cuts out, the video will continue for exactly two seconds and stop. sometimes i can reload the videos video, and it'll either play for two seconds without sound, or go normal, but usually for only a little time, not even a minute. similar problems for amarok, spotify and other applications using the sound card. this is the output when trying to restart the alsa demon
code:
root@muspellsheim:/etc/rc.d# /etc/rc.d/rc.alsa restart
loading alsa mixer settings: /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
unknown hardware: "ich4" "realtek alc650f" "ac97a:414c4723" "0x1462" "0x5770"
hardware is initialized using a guess method
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1255: failed to obtain info for control #11 (no such file or directory)
/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1255: failed to obtain info for control #12 (no such file or directory)
output of /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
code:
root@muspellsheim:/etc/rc.d# cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
some of the utput of lspci -v
i've tried reconfiguring alsa by using the alsaconf application, which didn't help. the output from restarting the alsa demon, may indicate that the correct driver isn't loaded.

when i plug in my headphones i was getting sound output both from the laptop speakers and the headphones, then i tried changing the sound.conf file and still no success and then i tried reinstalling the alsa - i downloaded the latest alsa-driver and alsa-lib and installed them, but when i rebooted there was no more sound from the headphones when i plug them in. I don't know what to do, i tried reinstalling alsa multiple times but still no success. Is there any way to bring back my previous configuration when i installed slackware ? Or some way to roll back using the installation dvd ?

The sound stopped working on my Macbook Pro 1,1. It was working fine before, and I can't think of any changes I made that would make it stop working. I know it's not a hardware problem because the Apple sound plays when I turn on the computer. Everything is unmuted in ALSA Mixer. None of the hardware options in Sound Preferences produce sound. Plugging in headphones or speakers does not solve the problem. I'm using 10.10.One curiosity: Whenever I do something that would normally cause sound to play, the optical audio red light in the headphone jack turns on, but no sound plays.

Slackware 13.1_64, everything works like a charm,BUTevery time my slackware boots up,the sound system changes from one device to another. So if I boot now, sound address is hw:1.0.
then if I reboot, the sound address becomes hw:0.0It's really annoying, because every time I have to re-run xmms and mplayer setup to get any sound! Also, if any program is playing audio (like xmms), other programs cannot play audio at the same time.ie: if I'm listening music with xmms then I try opening some video with mplayer or firefox/flash, I get no audio on this video....What's the deal with kde phonon? I thought it was supposed to be the new global sound system for kde4, like arts was for kde3

At least, I think it was the update that broke it. Anyway, my sound was working fine yesterday. I have gone through this thread to try and fix my sound, and it appears that my sound card has been uninstalled.
Step 1. aplay -l
Code:
aplay: device_list:235: no soundcards found...
Step 2. lspci -v
Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE/PE DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 01)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device 5770
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0
Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=64M]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: agpgart-intel
Kernel modules: intel-agp .....
Code:
sudo modprobe snd-intel8x0
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, it will be ignored in a future release.
FATAL: Error inserting snd_intel8x0 (/lib/modules/2.6.31-22-generic/kernel/sound/pci/snd-intel8x0.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Last time my sound wasn't working, I was directed to this thread. The script from this thread might work again, but if it will just be erased after every update, I'd like something a bit more permanent.

Sound was working just fine in my opensuse 11.2 install until recently. Now it looks like applications can't find the sound server. Under "Control Center" -> Sound it says "Waiting for sound system to respond" forever and doesn't go anywhere. In audacious it has error "alsa error No suitable mixer element found". Now my VirtualBox also gives an error about sound issue. All of these were working just fine early Yesterday.I installed bunch of updates given by YAST yesterday. Could something have messed this up? It is very annoying when sound system was working just fine before and now it suddenly doesn't! Sound like some from windows!

Last night I was trying to get my printer working, and when I rebooted, I lost networking and sound.I am currently booting on a live CD, and sound and networking are fine-- so it can't be a hardware issue (obviously). I must have inadvertently broken something, but I can't figure it out.I have tried restarting networking, but it doesn't respond-- it says stop/waiting or something like that.I can't access the sound preferences-- it says waiting for sound to respond (or something like that).
When I reboot, sometimes I see a terminal window with the same line scrolling very, very quickly-- something about waiting for USB. Additionally, the system is very slow to respond-- clicking a menu item can take a long time for it to appear, etc. What could have occurred, and how might I troubleshoot it?

in 10.10 my internal audio and my external usb 5.1 soundcard worked fine, and everything was still ok after i upgraded to 11.04. i then tried to install an equaliser called "alsaequal" which required the alsa-driver-1.0.24 package, which i compiled ok. now i've lost all sound and can only see dummy output listed in sound preferences, and no hardware is detected.
sudo aplay -l doesn't detect anything either! i've folled all the steps on the sticky thread in multimedia, i tried purging and reinstalling all the alsa packages which didnt work, and then tried compilling alsa source packages, which wound up with errors. i was following this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1725874 which suggested running the alsa-info.sh script. i ran this and uploaded the output here:961380d1e9d23fi dont really understand any of this, but it seems to have detected my internal pci card but not my usb card.any help would be really appreciated after the hours spend fruitlessly trawling through these forums

aplay -l shows no sound cards.
I have a Realtek ALC892 8-Channel HD Audio sound card.

Yesterday I used slackupdate.sh [0.7.3] from darklinux.net to update Slackware 13.1, 32 bit version. I got Firefox 3.6.6, installed it, moved the libflashplayer.so to the new plugins directory. Now I can't play utube videos. about: plugins says that flashplayer is installed and working. Grabbed flash from Adobe website, overwrote the existing one, still no joy. Asked in the Firefox user forum. Answer 'same thing happen to me -- Windows Vista' ...I'm not an advanced user. So, is this a Slackware problem, an Adobe problem, or a Firefox problem? I'm asking here because y'all are more likely to point me to a solution. I've always been able to grab the Linux version of Flash from Adobe website and install it

I'm on Firefox 3.6.11 with Flash 10.2 d161 on Slackware 13.1 32-bit. Hulu stopped working sometime this past week. (Actually when it stopped working I was still on the previous versions of Firefox and Flash - I upgraded 3.6.10 to 3.6.11 to see if it would help.) Worked fine before that. I've tried Firefox safe-mode, disabling add-ons and using default theme and none of this matters. Flash works fine and Hulu worked fine before a week ago.

I just upgraded from 8.10 to 9.10 and now my sound doesn't work (note: I don't know if sound was working on 9.4, since I only ran that long enough to upgrade again) Sound was working just fine under 8.10, and I just tried booting up with a livecd I had handy, which is 8.04.1 and sound worked right off the bat, no problems.I've checked the volumes on everything, including the master volume which WAS initially set to 0.Sadly, turning that up did nothing. The Pulseaudio Volume Control app seems to think nothing's wrong- it's picking up the sound from various applications just fine, the volumes are all on, etc. (aplay lists my soundcard fine:

I have two sound (or audio) hardware on my desktop computer. One is part of my computer motherboard and the other one is a sound card (CA0106 Soundblaster) I bought to replace the other one. When I first installed Ubuntu, my sound card was working properly after I made the necessary changes (system>preferences>sound), but after a few days it just stopped working and the sound from the motherboard is only working.
I reinstalled Ubuntu to my computer a few days ago, and my sound card was working again, but once again, it stopped working after a few days. How can I fix this?

I'm using Ubuntu and my sound was working fine and then suddenly it just stopped working.
It does however, have odd spells where its working (for like 2 minutes) but those spells are few and far between. So basically the sound is not working.
When it isn't working my speaker seem to be making these hissing/screeching noises.
I've tried looking up on Google on how to fix it, i.e. running terminals, etc. but still haven't come round to fixing it. Could someone explain to me how to fix the sound please?
And no, the speakers aren't on mute. I checked volume control and everything is full.
Summary:
Laptop: Acer
OS: Ubuntu 9.something
Sound card: hda-intel
Problem: Sound not working
