Debian Multimedia :: Audio Crackling On High Volumes With ALSA On Intel ICH7
Aug 23, 2015I'm having some issues with audio crackling/buzzing when turning up the volume, or on songs that have overclipped / overdriven parts, which doesn't happen on Windows (on it those sections are just "dampened"). Is there some certain settings in ALSA that are used to deal with this? Or is it something specific to the driver for the hardware? Speaking of which I'm using some integrated audio which goes by the name of Intel ICH7, and the chip itself is Analog Devices AD1981B.
I'm only using ALSA, without PulseAudio, and I've made sure the volumes both in the media players and under alsamixer aren't turned too high (PCM is at 47% and "Headphones" -- what is "Master" on Windows and on other soundcards under Linux -- is on 22%), so it isn't an issue with the software mixer being turned up too high. Also I'm using a pair of quality headphones (Sony MDRV55) so it's not an issue with the analog audio output either. I've also tried multiple other headphones and the result is the same.

Slackware :: Audio HDA Intel 13.1 MacBook External Speakers Only?
Dec 4, 2010I thought it was a driver issue, but after messing around with the ALSA mixer a lot, it turned out that when I enabled headphones(or disabled, honestly not sure) that my headphones worked, and when I took them out the speakers worked. Then when I rebooted for whatever reason, only the speakers(built-in) worked. Really, I'm not sure why this is.
When I got them to work there was a switch for the headphones in the graphical mixer(which is what I used, not the ncurses[?] ALSA thing), but I can't seem to find that anymore. It's not a major issue, it just puts me off watching videos and listening to music because my laptop speakers are really low quality. I'd go out to buy a pair of external speakers, but obviously with the audio jack not working, this could be problematic.
I guess I could buy USB external speakers but then the probability of Slackware having pre-installed audio drivers for a cheap generic brand of speakers is so low it doesn't justify the effort of going and buying some, nor the money that would be spent. Willing to enter any commands/w.e. I'll be on Slackware all the time 'cause I need a Linux system right now.

Nov 8, 2010I am unable to get any audio to play. I configured alsa and checked to make sure nothing was muted. I think the problem might be KDE related but I'm not sure. Also when I restart the computer I get this error. "the audio playback device HDA intel (ALC887 Analog) does not work".

Aug 7, 2009I have behringer UCA202 usb card, after plug to usb, it just works , I have only small problem with alsamixer, which still shows by default my integrated HDA Intel, I could switch it by F6 or by alsamixer -c 1no problem, but I expect that default card is now plugged "USB audio", so why alsamixer recognize default audio device as HDA intel and not a USB Audio ?anyone who has two or more sound cards with the same issue ?

Apr 18, 2011I've install Slackware 13.1 and i cannot shutdown my PC. The shut down process stop while trying to run PCMCIA module.
This is the first time that happens.
From Hardware point of view , i didn't do anything at all (if that helps).

Jul 2, 2011I installed a slack 13.7 on an old laptop. KDE was set as default desktop. then I login and run startx and I saw KDE first screen display. after that I saw blank screen with a mouse on it. Then it stayed there and it seems try read some in my harddisk since the persistent harddisk light.

May 2, 2011When I try to put slackware to sleep or have it hibernate the system simply sits with a black screen. Normally it would do this for a short period of time immediately before the actual sleep state (screen powered off, croissant light on) is entered, but currently it does it indefinitely. My sleep USED to work just fine, it broke after some unclean shutdown or another, basically I just want to know what I can try resetting to try to get it back to normal.
Slackware64 13.1, running on thinkpad X61.
EDIT: Of course the second I make the post I think of trying to sleep/hibernate from the command line instead of through X/GDM (Gnome SlackBuild). That works.

By default the plug boots first from the external usb, so I would only need to set up / on the first partition. any way i can transfer files back and forth to this would be great since it does not work in vista either. and I am pretty sure 99.9% that I have all the libmtp, libnjb, and whatever other libs are needed installed but in gnomad it says no devices found on USB hub. Basically, I want my laptop or any other machines to boot from my network. I followed the instructions from AlienBob to do so. I setup my laptop to boot from the NIC, it automatically gets an IP from the DHCP server (pfSense);
I setup my gateway/DHCP server (pfSense) as is: -The IP address from the network boot server: 192.168.0.101 (the server where my slackware mirror and all tftp boot files are) -The filename used for network booting: /mnt/it-maintenance/tftpboot/slackware-13.1/pxelinux.0 (the absolute address of pxelinux.0 in my server)

Dec 24, 2009I am having problems getting Seamonkey 2 and 2.0.0.1 to run on Slackware 12.2. I have tried the packages for 12.2 in patches/packages/ and the package from the seamonkey website, both with identical results. Seamonkey appears to start, and does appear in the process list, however no windows appear and it uses little memory and no CPU cycles. No messages appear in the console if I start it from there. I have to kill the processes (seamonkey , run-mozilla and seamonkey-bin). I have tried removing my Seamonkey profile, with the same results.
