Slackware :: : Automatic START Of 3 Daemons At Boot?
May 17, 2010
I'm loging my slackware as a simple user After each reboot I need to start cupsd for my printer nfsd and mountd to export my shared directories I use init 4 for my desktop I would like these services to start always without the konsol and the command lines.
I've installed Slackware 12.2 on a 12 year old desktop. It is the only OS on the machine. When I press the Power button it stops at Slackware's splash screen asking me to choose an OS, even tho' there is only one to choose from. I installed LILO to the MBR and that is also listed there as a possibility.
Is there a way to set Linux so it will simply load automatically?
Just installed FC10. I edited the /etc/inittab to start FC at the command prompt. However, how can I change the boot so that I can see the daemons loading not just that graphical bar at the bottom of the screen.
My system was working fine. I followed a thread online to try to get samba to share better, installed "winbind" and now I can't get passed "Checking System Files" on boot up.
Upon boot, "Checking System Files": Starting Firestarter firewall .... fails. Starting samba daemons _ .... Just hangs there forever
Is there a way to get back into my system so that I can uninstall winbind, firestarter, or samba if need be?
I have installed Koha on Debian Lenny. It does work well, but I have to manually start the koha-zebra-ctl.sh by entering /usr/share/koha/bin/koha-zebra-ctl.sh start The is, however, that this starts at boot from /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon. Like /etc/init.d/koha-zebra-daemon start (does not work now) In the koha-zebra-daemon file I have:
#!/bin/sh # Quick start-stop-daemon example, derived from Debian /etc/init.d/ssh set -e # Must be a valid filename
I have a little problem here. I tried to copy include directory from g++ to a place where it suppose to be and when i couldn't because of the rights i wrote something like this in the bash:
Code:
Code:
cause i hate when I can't do what I want without tiping command
After few minutes all daemons crashed and now I can't boot normally
in console i've tried
Code:
And that stopped on /prc/756 directory
Well now i can boot normally but most of programs are not working, i can't get to the internet? and it looks like there is no way to become a root cause there is no sudo/
Can i reinstall ubuntu and keep all packages and files on its places?
I installed Slackware 13.1 a little bit ago, played around with it, performed an upgrade with Slackpkg, messed around with some settings, and chose a new theme. I had set the runlevel to 4 and when I rebooted after choosing a new login theme the screen just went black at the point where the login prompt should have appeared. I couldn't even get into the CLI. Using a LiveCD, I set the run level to 3 again and was able to log in, but when I try to start X the screen goes black and freezes again, so I believe my new login theme is the culprit. Is there a way to change to the default login theme from the CLI?
2nd and 3rd might be linux kernel problems but may help someone else so I included here.1st -- run level 4, /etc/rc.d/rc.4 and xdm -nodaemonJust installed 13.1 on an odd system, including building a new kernel. One thing I do is have the system boot to a command prompt and then run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to start XBut I found that the rc.4 uses xdm -nodaemon flag and it was causing problems so I removed and all is pretty good. I still see some odd behavior with the virtual ttys sometimes.2nd -- when building a new kernel, I found I need the device-mapper butcouldn't tell if that was a linux kernel issue or something to do with lilo, I didn't want and don't need multiple disk devices like for LVM or MD so I didn't plan to have this enabled.3rd -- CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23 When that kernel config option was selected and I have only an EXT4 filesystem, the filesystem was mounted as an EXT2, even though the kernel had no EXT2 feature. /etc/fstab specified EXT4 but the mount command showed EXT2. A silent problem that could leave an unpleasant surprise since EXT2 hos no journaling.4th -- I had to run lilo -C by hand in a virtual tty before finishing the install. This was what I had to do when installing 13.0 on different hardware. It seems that the lilo part of the install needs some sorting out.
Where do I change the option to have samba start during the boot process? I've googled and I've found old posts that say it's a line in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet2 but in my semi-current box, I don't see the part about starting stopping the samba server.
I got my problem with KDE Desktop. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.4, when I make updates to my YaST repositories. I am a full file system usage in. / then I delete the file / var / tmp, because large files up to 4 GB. KDE Desktop then I could not run ranymore.
I was googling and found KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE when I try to execute this command:
kbuildsycoca4 kquitapp plasma-desktop> / dev / null 2> & 1 kstart plasma-desktop &> / dev / null 2> & 1
KDE Desktop can run normally but does not like the first time before the crash. And my KDE Desktop not automatic start.
Where an i found log from KDE DEsktop. I had searched on /var/log/messages, /var/log/kdm.
And how the best solution if I want to restore OPensuse.?
I switched today to slackware-current on one of my desktops to play with it and ran directly into a problem.
Since ages my lilo.conf has two entries for slackware. One for runlevel 3 and one for runlevel 4.
Code:
Since the upgrade this is no more possible because I get a kernel panic as soon as udevadm trigger is called. The stack says something about an unknown boot option. Because that i removed the append lines from my lilo.conf and i was able to boot the system. The crash happens when udev is called from within the ramdisk and afterwards. I tried both.
My question is now. Is this a bug in udev or expected? I have this setup since at least 5 years and had never problems with that. What do I have to do to be able to select the runlevel at boot time?
i finished installing oracle 11g r2 with EM but i cant find any good script that will close the database completely before rebooting they all start it correctly but for the shutdown they don't wait and the database restart in recovery mode
I need a download manager that automatic start download at 2 a.m and stop in 8 a.m . I test many app such as fatrat d4x .... but can not find app like idm in linux.
I have started to write a SlackBuilds installer, similar in spirit to slackpkg. So far it is only about 100 lines of code and it can search for a package and install it automatically from slackbuilds.org. I doubt it will ever be as polished as slackpkg but it may be useful for some people. Maybe something like this already exists? If it does then I would like to check it out. If however this doesn't exist then I will most likely continue to develop my program. So far it is quite crude but it does install and search for packages.
i do software (learn keyboard) for blind people. I selected ubuntu and festival and TTS. Please i NEED (mandatory for disabled people) live cd what can be inserted into cdrom and everything is done - automatic boot, settings done, software is on start-up... created own distribution, programed software, done settings, but what kills me is : How i can run AUTOMATIC (without asking, no enter) boot from CD-ROOM. Now CD asking :
- 1) What language want you (here is only czech) - need ENTER (killer for disabled people) - 2) Boot from CD or hdd - need ENTER (killer no. 2 for disabeld people) - after 2) I m ok, i can handle it myself, works.
I edited file in isolinux menu.lst etc - I can edit text but i do not know how run defalut choice automaticly. timout 0 does not work I spent a lot of hours reading tutorials grub/isolinux and have nothing ...
What I'd like to have is alsa mixer enable microphone on plug-in and mute it on plug-out.
It's because when enabled it produces unwanted noise in the speakers, so I have to manually turn it off once I'm done with using skype and turn on again when I get a call. I'd like to automate that process.
If I understand correctly Ubuntu does not allow a wifi connection until a user loges in. That makes it so that prey (see preyproject.com) cannot send notices until someone has logged onto Ubuntu.what I would like to do (but I have no clue how) is to set up a user account that automatically, in the background, logs on at start up. Then this little user login would establish any Internet connection that is possible (wifi or lan) and start the program 'prey'. This should all be totally transparent to the user that would just see the regular log in screen.
to avoid automatic start of this mail server (I use qmail). After several months, I did a reboot and exim is started! Looking at the history, I found this command:
Quote: dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
Maybe this command has restored the init script of exim?
After a kernel update, the system always updates the GRUB menu, and the newer kernel is the default boot option. However, after an update on my F13 X64 system, the GRUB menu was updated, the config file still sets the default to "1" but if i left the automatic boot it will boot the previous kernel... am I crazy or missing something here? Here is my /boot/grub/grub.conf file:
When I try to run programs from root terminal I get the error
Code: Select allQDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave. No protocol specified kate: cannot connect to X server :0
I found a solution: I do Code: Select allxhost SI:localuser:root
but I have to do it after each reboot. I tried to put this command in rc.local but it did'nt work. How to do this auto?
I used LILI to create a live USB key - I believe I used the 686MB version. Everything worked fine. I wanted to try the full DVD install, so I did the same with that image.
Now, it doesn't matter if I load it in virtualbox or if I boot up my comp with the USB stick, I get to the Linux boot menu, choose "Persistent Mode", and then below it shows "Automatic boot in 10 Seconds..."
Once it counts down to 0 it just resets to 10, and keeps on counting!
Ubuntu 10.04 performed an automatic update today which required a reboot afterwards. The reboot took me into a shell "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu6", rather than the usual grub boot menu.
I have just installed Centos 5, and created two user account in it. how can i set it up that it will automaticaly boot to one of the user acount upon bootup?
