I am using ubuntu 8.04.When I install software from internet then files are downloaded to /var/cache/apt/archives so i keep those debian files in safe place so that I can install that software on another stand-alone computer.
MY question: When we run 'apt-get update' for first time after fresh install it downloads some files. Can i store those files & point to them for a networkless computer which has no internet ? If this is possible it will allow me to 'apt-get check' on stand-alone computer to see if any package is not proper.
I've been trying to download some software stuff off of the Ubuntu Software Center, but every time I try it tells me "Waiting for other software managers to quit", and just sits there at 0%. I've been waiting for 45 minutes for it to start the download of Pidgin.I looked in the Processes of System Monitor, and I dunno what other Software manager would be running. The only processes that are running are System Monitor... and then the process"software-center" under the Waiting Channel tab goes from 0 to "do_wait" to "poll_schedule_timeout", and its status goes from Running to Sleeping.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had the "set-cap" exception problem, so when the fix was released, I updated. Since then, the ubuntuone-preferences dialog will not start or work. I tried the me bar, the system menu, and the CLI.Now, I bought some music the first day the store opened and it downloaded fine. Then yesterday I bought another album and the store hangs on "downloading the files." Six hours later, it still won't move.
It gets weirder. The music store says its trying to download a couple of tracks from the first album (even though they are already downloaded), the second album shows up as downloaded under the Web UI, but doesn't show up at all on my desktop .ubuntuone folder.I've tried the IRC a couple of times, with no response. (In fairness, it may have been bad timing, I'm in New York) I don't mind trying to sort this out myself, but I'd just like some more hints. I've looked at the syncd log and found the exception, but I don't know how else to restart the syncd. At the same time, my files *are* synching, and *one* of my address books is synching (my gmail account contacts aren't). I know this is alot at once, but I'm afraid of dividing the problem and missing something.
I tried to set up an automatic program restart on Debian Lenny for fail2ban and asterisk. Google helped me to find some HowTos. However, all what I tried so far doesn't work. The latest version: According some instructions the following commands have been written in a file called auto_start_stop:
Code: #! /bin/sh
-> saved in the folder /etc/init.d and
-> its properties changed with a right-click to 075.
-> The links have been created with update-rc.d auto_start_stop defaults
Why this doesn't work and how I could correct it?
I install lirc and want to prgram irxevent start automatic when the system start
Code:
System->Preferences->Startup Applications
Add an item, but that not works every time, means sometimes cannot work.
What should I have to do if I want to back again to the previous conf of automatic Conversion to Daylight saving. Also I noted that the o/p of the zdump -v /usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo | grep 2011 was
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo Thu Apr 28 21:59:59 2011 UTC = Thu Apr 28 23:59:59 2011 EET isdst=0 gmtoff=7200
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo Thu Apr 28 22:00:00 2011 UTC = Fri Apr 29 01:00:00 2011 EEST isdst=1 gmtoff=10800
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo Sat Aug 20 20:59:59 2011 UTC = Sat Aug 20 23:59:59 2011 EEST isdst=1 gmtoff=10800
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo Sat Aug 20 21:00:00 2011 UTC = Sat Aug 20 23:00:00 2011 EET isdst=0 gmtoff=7200
and changed to be
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo -9223372036854689408 = NULL
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo 9223372036854689407 = NULL
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo 9223372036854775807 = NULL
After adding the new rule
Note : these are the I made to disable auto conversion to daylight saving. I created a text file named nodst at usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa
Then type the following:
#Rule NAME FROM TO TYPE IN ON AT SAVE LETTER/S
Rule egypt 2011 2013 - Apr 29 00:00 0 s
# Zone NAME GMTOFF RULES/SAVE FORMAT [UNTIL]
Zone Africa/Cairo +2:00 egypt BRE%s
Then issue the following command
zic nodst
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Africa/Cairo /etc/localtime
you can refer to this ubuntu thread for context, but i'll sum up what i'm trying to do here to spare the reading. basically i want to be able to schedule a filesystem check with automatic repairs at the next boot time. but i'm not sure if this will try to automatically fix errors which is what i want to do. the reason i want to do this is because i experienced a power outage (the machine was not plugged into an UPS) and i want to make sure everything is ok.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt is known and well described in C++ standard ('C++ Standard - ANSI ISO IEC 14882 2003.pdf') that under certain circumstances types are promoted - for example, 'int' is promoted to 'double'.My design goal is to create wrappers around standard scalar types (like 'double', 'float', 'long', etc.) that would prevent such conversions/promotions, i.e. I want to create a really strictly typed C++ environment (like, say, OCaml).
However, the promotion is caught at runtime. Is there a way in C++ to catch/block such promotions/conversion at compile time ?
Can anyone tell me how to have Apache automatically start when I boot the system (and log in)?
It is a simple home-PC running Fedora and I put Apache on for internal/local use only (so I can get to it from my Windows box).
Right now, I have to su (to root) and run the Apache startup command.
I'd like to have it simply come up when I log-in.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.
How can I change the automatic fsck execution at boot time to be above 30 boots? I reboot the system sometimes 3 to 4 times a day. Intel 3 GHz, tower, i386 lenny vmlinuz-2.6.31-686

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find how to schedule a process to start at a specific time (not on start up). How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.
So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.
If I understand correctly Ubuntu does not allow a wifi connection until a user loges in. That makes it so that prey (see preyproject.com) cannot send notices until someone has logged onto Ubuntu.what I would like to do (but I have no clue how) is to set up a user account that automatically, in the background, logs on at start up. Then this little user login would establish any Internet connection that is possible (wifi or lan) and start the program 'prey'. This should all be totally transparent to the user that would just see the regular log in screen.

What is the current state of NFS failover (i.e. setting up two server with shared storage, with automatic failover if one fails?) I've seen a cookbook, but no details that would let me assess how well it works. There are lots of complex issues with data consistency, but the detailed information on that is years old. Our needs are fairly simple: 2 servers, a shared array, and I'm reasonably sure that we don't use locking. However we'd like failover to work reliably without loss of data.

I live in India and my computer's time is always a minute ahead. I have selected the option to keep it synchronized with internet time servers but as there does not appear to be a time server for ubuntu in India I am not sure what to do.
