Debian Configuration :: Automatic Commands On Boot

Jan 15, 2016

When I try to run programs from root terminal I get the error

Code: Select allQDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave.
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0

I found a solution: I do
Code: Select allxhost SI:localuser:root

but I have to do it after each reboot. I tried to put this command in rc.local but it did'nt work. How to do this auto?

Debian Configuration :: Automatic .config Generator For Kernel 2.6.33.4?

May 16, 2010

I'm recompiling my kernel on a dell latitude c600 running lenny as I type, and it's taking forever, so far upward of 4 hours.I think I'm getting drivers for ever piece of computing hardware since the univac So I googled "a kernel conf creator" and got [URL]... Its a nice, clean method for finding what hardware your using... you just run lspci cpuinfo make xconfig and put in all the info yourself. So I was thinking: this is exactly the kind of dull, repetitive behavior that computers were made for. Is there a program that can find my hardware info, and make the.config itself, with very little user input?Or should I reinstall debian on another partition and steal the .config from it? Or should I man it up and do it myself?

Debian Installation :: No Automatic Boot UEFI Dell Latitude E6410

Nov 20, 2015

I just installed Debian jessie on my Dell Latitude E6410 using the UEFI install. No everything went well during the install, but after the install the first boot i ran into an issue that the laptop will not boot.

When I go in to the boot menu of the Dell Latitude E6410, I see that debian has created a uefi name (Debian)

When I select this, it boots without any issues. After again a reboot again, no luck still a black screen during the boot.

Seems that the only option to get my laptop booting is by pressing F12 and select Debian in the UEFI boot of the laptop.

Is there any way i can get my laptop to boot Debian directly from UEFI, without having to press F12?? (Also disabled all legacy devices to start up but no luck)...

- Debian Jessie X64 (Using 32/64 network install, via USB)
- Dell Latitude E6410 i5 (1280x800 intel graphics) latest bios A16
- SSD drive (Samsung 470 series)
- Debian is the only OS installed

Debian Installation :: Wheezy 7.8 UEFI Boot Commands

Feb 6, 2015

I have a server in which I'm trying to install Debian into. There's no BIOS, only EFI boot. The vendor locked it down so there's no way to see it or get into it.

The Wheezy 7.8 netinst CD has EFI boot parameters and works on everything I throw it in, except this one server. Booting it up, the code doesn't see the EFI and boots into normal mode, negating every chance to install it (dozens upon dozens of failed installs).

During boot, I press the [TAB] at the Debian Linux installer menu and get the load parameters (/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 etc). What parameter can I add to this line to get it to run in UEFI mode so we can install it?

Debian Installation :: Creating Boot Script For Custom Commands In Jessie

May 11, 2015

I didn't change anything; it just stopped working on boot. I've changed permissions according to messages from log files. No good.I now get messages saying "unable to open display ' '." If I set the display (I've done this several ways, the messages say "unable to open display ':0'."

Systemd is taking control of everything basic, with almost no documentation and no configuration tools at all: rationalization by lunatics. You can make a script to run commands on boot using systemd on Jessie by creating two files: the script, in any location a file in /etc/systemd/system that runs that script..My script is called james-boot.service, placed in my /home/james/.bin directory.

#! /bin/sh
# this is run by /etc/systemd/system/james-boot.service
# Enable with sudo systemctl enable james-boot.service
# Check with sudo systemctl status james-boot.service
# If it says the service is loaded, it's OK -- inactive only means it's done running.

[code]....

This file must have ownership root.root, with (apparently) permissions 664 (rw-rw-r--).After creating, enable with sudo systemctl enable james-boot. service.Check with sudo systemctl status james-boot.service. If it says the service is loaded, it's OK -- "inactive" only means it's done running.

Debian Configuration :: Modify Boot Scripts To Boot Usb Device?

Mar 3, 2010

Without going into a lot of the reasons, I have a bootable program on a USB stick that i would like to 'boot' when debian is starting up (or after it completes, or whenever it makes sense to do it). My MB does not support a USB boot, I've removed the floppy and CD so I can add additional HDs (its a small box but well ventilated).

Another option I have is to use my bios 'network boot' option, but I have no clue how to use it and the only description in the mb manual says "Allows system to be booted over a network" In network boots, *usually* one is given an option of specifying a device address, and the network boot executes a boot protocol (e.g. bootp), and the boot image file is downloaded to the target, stored and run out of RAM. No evidence of this behavior is exhibited when the network boot option is selected in the bios...

Networking :: Automatic Internet Configuration Lost After Update?

Sep 10, 2010

After running a large update and rebooting a few weeks ago, I found that my internet connection had stopped working. My internal network still worked fine though, so it I know it's not the card itself or its configuration. After a bit of trial and error I discovered that simply running dhclient brings the connection up again, so it appears that something is interfering with the initial dhcp update to my ISP (or something like that; I'm no expert in this area. ) My usual policy in cases like this is to wait through two or three updates in the hopes that it's just a temporary problem, but it's been a while now and subsequent updates haven't fixed it.

I've tried looking around, but I can't come up with search criteria specific enough to narrow it down to my specific situation. I'm not even sure where to begin looking to diagnose the problem, nor do I know which package update(s) could've affected it. I'm not sure what might be useful, but here's the relevant entry in /etc/network/interfaces. I have it configured with a static internal address, with my router as the gateway.

Code:

# The primary network interface
mapping eth0
script grep
map eth0

Debian Configuration :: How To Boot Off CD After Installed?

Aug 11, 2010

I installed Debian, apparently without KDE or gnome capabilities. At least that's what it tells me when I try to follow instructions for installing same. So, I figured I created an image of an installation disk without those, or OpenOffice, or Xwindows capabilities - (debian-505-i386-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso). So I created another image on CD of debian-505-i386-CD-1.iso, which I planned to install over the original install. However, I cannot get the computer to boot off the CD anymore; it always reverts to the Boot Menu (I have Windows and Debian partitions). The disk whirs around for a while, and then the multiple OS boot menu comes up. This is all being driven by the fact that I don't seem to have a working copy of OpenOffice.Org installed. Although I have managed to play around with mounting and unmounting the CDROM, and using the file commands, I don't seem to be able to actually get an application working. I downloaded the complete OpenOffice.org installation from their website, and extracted all *.deb files to CD. I attempted to unpack and install the OpenOffice.org files directly, and it seemed to do that, but the program does not seem to be available to me. I figure my best option is to reinstall with the right image.

Debian Configuration :: Two Different Boot Symptoms?

Feb 16, 2011

Warning: NooB typing this. Two days ago I replaced an old version of Kubuntu with Squeeze. (This is not the computer/system I've written about in two recent threads.) Installation went smoothly, but one very early boot (I think the very first after installation) halted very early on, with:Waiting for /dev to be fully populated... [    4.051267]ACPI: I/O resource 0000:00:1f.3 [0x1c00:0x1c1f] conflicts with ACPI region SMBI [0x1c00-0x1c0f]I stared at that for a very long time, used another computer to google for clues on what to do about it, couldn't find any text that I could understand -- I don't have a degree in anything computer-related, I'm just Joe Blow who wants to get things done on a computer without malware scares -- and eventually gave up and rebooted.

The reboot went well and I hoped there'd just been some kind of fluke. Just now, however, booting -- for perhaps the second or third time since the frozen mis-boot -- brought an elegant message telling me of a kernel failure and asking me if I wanted to inform whoever of it. (Yes, I responded.) The computer seems to be working fine: I haven't rebooted it since that error message, yet here I am browsing and posting away.Unlike this person, for example, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. (Well, I do know that he's using SuSE, I'm using Debian Squeeze, and they're not the same.)The computer's a circa-two-year-old laptop; I doubt that it's flaky because I there were no (visible) boot problems with Kubuntu just last week. I haven't installed anything other than from debian.org's squeeze repository. The mouse that's plugged in now isn't the same as the trackball plugged in yesterday, but that's the extent of any "hardware changes".If this computer fails to boot one time in four and at other times gives scary error messages that I can safely ignore -- well, I can live with that. But my guess is that it's more like an oil pressure warning light in a car: that I ignore this stuff at my peril.
