i am able to set up samba server with adc it is working properly. also i set the GID and stikki bit permission in sharing so i can set only crater can delete the files. But i want some users have ability to delete permission for all files and folders in that sharing

I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba?
I've been trying for what seems like forever to share a single directory with only two authorized users and I just can't get the permissions right.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop as home file/print server.
Two users: chris and gretchen
Directory to share: Music
Music resides in chris' home folder.
I'd like to have full access for these two users and no access for anyone else. The challenge is that the best I can get for gretchen is read-only. What i've done so far:
Created user accounts for each
Created Samba accounts with passwords for each
Created a group called "family" and added chris and gretchen to it
Assigned the family group to the Music folder.
Shared the folder giving read and write access to family group.
chris seems to work ok but when gretchen access it from her snow leopard laptop she can't create a new folder. It should be noted that chris is also the admin account.

View 2 Replies View RelatedQuite often I need someone to transfer a file to my laptop, and it's often different OS to different OS, and setting file-sharing, sshd/ssh, ftpd/ftp, and whatever else not is often not worth it. A USB key is also not always handy or big enough.
But, it's easy to be on the same network, just hard to get service working on top of it in less than 3 minutes if you've never dealt with that person's computer before.
What I was thinking would be the simplest thing would be if I could run apache, and have a very simple web script that simply allows file uploads. Something that would serve a web page that has a "choose file" button which brings up the file dialog, pretty standard I guess. I wouldn't say no to a few more functions on top of that.
Given that, does anyone know of a simple apache modules, or a web server script (language doesn't matter) that would allow for this?
my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

How to configure File Sharing server which will be in the same network along with Windows DNS servers and others.Googling showed me that "Samba server" will do the job of file sharing . Okay samba server is configured on Ubuntu Linux machine but how to add this to the existing domain where windows machines are ? Backround I am attempting to setup a server in my house mostly(for the first time) for backups and file sharing. It is important to me that file permissions are preserved. So its my understanding that I must use idmapd in order for this to work. As of now I'm only working with the linux distros while osx will be dealt with once these two work together. portmapper is up and running, along with lockd on both machines. Firewalls are also down on both machines for now. The server side was all setup using the GUI interface with no extra options selected. Problem When attempting to "mount -t nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" I get an error operation not permitted with no error printing in /var/log/message. If I use "mount -t -o nolock nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" it mounts just fine. Ive checked both machines multiple times to make sure that lockd is up and running. In the idmapd.conf file I the domain as "localdomain" for both machines but I doubt that is right; like I stated above this is my first attempt at a server. I'm assuming the problem is a whole missing step that involves some kind of id mapping server I need to setup.
Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?
