Ubuntu :: Samba Stalls - Link Desktop "Karmic" Up To An XP Laptop "homegroup" For File Sharing

Jan 30, 2010

I am trying to link my desktop "Karmic" up to an XP laptop "homegroup" for file sharing. Both computers are on my wifi served by a router. The following plugins were installed via Synaptics:

[Code]...

Initially clicking on "samba" brings this up: "warning: some lines couldn't be understood while reading the configuration file /etc/samba/smb.conf. these may be unknown configuration directives samba plugins but could also be configuration errors." You ignore the warning and continue on. The results are a static "samba server menu" accepting what you type ...but doing nothing with it upon pressing OK.

Fedora Networking :: Unknown Samba Password - Use Samba For File Sharing Like On A Windows Home Network

Jul 17, 2010

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.

My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop With Win7 Connecting Through Desktop (karmic)?

Mar 26, 2010

I have a laptop with win7 and I would like to connect to the internet through my desktop pc's connection. I have Karmic on the desktop and use a cable modem and I'm thinking about buying a router to solve this problem but I wouldn't know how to set it up in Ubuntu nor which router would be the best or easiest to set up. I saw this site [URL] and I'm torn between the TP-Link TL-WR741ND Wireless Lite N Router and the D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615, because these are the cheapest ones and I can't afford much more than that.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing Files Between Desktop And Laptop (Windows 7)

Sep 11, 2010

I followed these steps to try and connect my Desktop(Ubuntu) and Laptop(Win 7) together so they could share files.

Code:

sudo apt-get install samba
sudo su
cp /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.comf_default
gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

[code]....

sudo su was not originally in the steps but it wouldn't give me permission to edit the samba file unless I did.Also at the end it said command not found or something like that when I tried to restart samba, so I just logged out and then back in.So now I can identify Ubuntu and Win 7 from on each other, but I can not access either of them. Ubuntu goes into windows network, then workgroup, shows the computers on the network but when I try to access one this comes up:When windows tries to access Ubuntu it request for username and password. I type it in but it does not recognize it.

P.S. I allowed the Documents folder on Ubunto to share across the Network, and while it shows up in along with myshare on Win 7, it still requests for username and password.

-> am I right that Ubuntu PC cannot access (read or write) USB harddisk nor USB thumbdrive as formatted by WinXP? how about SD card through USB card reader? does UNR v9.10 contain Samba or do I need to install it separately after UNR installation? where can I find the instruction for installation and configuration of the samba server?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba File-sharing Not Working?

Jun 6, 2010

I am at a total loss. For all intents and purposes - sharing files over a lan without a password between this ubuntu 10.04 machine and my wifes laptop (windows 7) should be trouble free. I've installed samba, and created an smb.conf file in /etc/samba

Code:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = Samba Server
netbios name = oak
security = share

[Code]....

I want to note that I was using Arch Linux and this exact setup worked flawlessly. Why on earth would it not work the same in Ubuntu? Is it not the same Samba?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing The Samba File / Directory?

Aug 1, 2010

I've been trying for what seems like forever to share a single directory with only two authorized users and I just can't get the permissions right.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop as home file/print server.
Two users: chris and gretchen
Directory to share: Music
Music resides in chris' home folder.

I'd like to have full access for these two users and no access for anyone else. The challenge is that the best I can get for gretchen is read-only. What i've done so far:

Created user accounts for each
Created Samba accounts with passwords for each
Created a group called "family" and added chris and gretchen to it
Assigned the family group to the Music folder.
Shared the folder giving read and write access to family group.

chris seems to work ok but when gretchen access it from her snow leopard laptop she can't create a new folder. It should be noted that chris is also the admin account.

I have been able to get it to a max of 25% of installation before stalling, but more often than not it stalls when I'm trying to choose the keyboard type, or when I'm trying to setup my username / PC hostname.

I've carried out an md5sum on the iso and it shows no errors. I've downloaded the iso a second time and carried out the same check, and similarly no errors.

Ubuntu Servers :: D-Link DFE-530TX In Karmic 9.10?

Feb 2, 2010

(Disclosure: I posted this in the other forums yesterday and realized this is the better place for it. I'll get rid of the other one.) I'm trying to add a second NIC to my Karmic 9.10 (Server Edition) as eth1. The new NIC is a D-Link DFE-530TX+ [URL]... It seems like everything should be working fine because it showed up in ifconfig with no configuration after I put it in my machine and it's even is able to get an IP address from the DHCP server in the router.

The problem is that it's not transmitting anything. I can't SSH into it from my other computers on the LAN, and when I ran a sniffer on the interface it was directly connected to there were no packets.

Here's lspci:
