Server :: World Facing File Sharing Protocol?

Sep 7, 2010

I'm trying to decide on how to host and serve files to multiple operating systems (Linux, Mac OS X, Windows XP and Windows 7) over the internet. I'd like this to be secure (obviously), but don't want to use SSH tunnelling.Ideally, this would be something which could be persistently mounted on the client machine (a network drive in Windows, likewise in Mac OS X and Linux) and wouldn't require the installation of extra software on the clients. I thought about samba, but I'm not sure if it's secure enough to be internet-facing. Would FTP fit?resumably it's possible to have encrypted connections only and limit connections to a specified number of client IPs.

Ubuntu Networking :: Which File Sharing Protocol?

Nov 30, 2010

I have a small home/office network, which currently consists of a very old mac running osx10.4, a windoze 7 laptop and an ubuntu 10.04/windoze vista laptop, along with a homebrew setup on a wii which understands smb. I'm in the process of setting up an additional ubuntu PC which will, among other things act as a file and web server, mainly for web development and for sharing files, music and videos.

Up until now I've just run everything on SMB, and I will have to set samba up on the new server, but I would prefer to use a different protocol for the ubuntu and mac systems, as SMB doesn't recognise/create file permissions properly and it takes a while sometimes to notice new files in folders it's recently looked in.

Ubuntu Security :: How To Setup Web-facing Ssh Server Securely

Oct 18, 2010

I have a small network at my office (3 workstations, 1 ubuntu desktop that I'm using as a file server). I'm using a WRT54G2 router for networking and internet connectivity. Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: I want to be able to access my little file server from home, across town. I think ssh might be the best way to go now. What I don't know: How do I set up the ssh server on my machine/network without compromising my network security and the security of my server? Do I just set up port/ip forwarding on my router, install openssh, and that's it?

Networking :: Using A Public-Facing SSH Server To Broker A Connection Between Two Clients?

Feb 22, 2010

I'm sure this is possible... I'm just not sure how. Yet! I have three machines. One is at home behind my firewall and has a dynamic IP. That's fine as I don't really want to open any ports on my home firewall. The second is at work sitting behind the firewall there- and I'm not even going to ask for approval to NAT an IP to my PC at work :-).

The third is in a data center far away. I only have a shell account on this server but other than that shell account not being root, I can do most anything I like with that account. What I would like to do is SSH to this server simultaneously from my home and work PCs and, via this third machine, make them talk.

This is pure geekery so it doesn't matter what they say to each other; I just want to make them talk. Maybe one uploads a file and the other just pulls down that file. Maybe one opens a FIFO on the remote server and starts writing to it while the other starts snarfing that data. In fact, I like this latter idea best, I think. How would you do it? What scripts (fired by cron if need be since I'm ostensibly away from at least one of the PCs at any given time) would you use?

Server :: Easy File Sharing On Windows... Without SMB?

Jun 16, 2010

Question for the sys admin types:So, say you want to do file sharing in an environment with a lot of Windows clients, but you want the shared data on a Linux server. You can use SAMBA, and that will make all the Windows clients happy (provided, of course, that you can get SAMBA working correctly). But is this your only option?I mean, obviously you can use ssh/sftp. But the Windows sftp clients I have tried don't make the file sharing process as simple for non-techies: you either just get a command-line, or you get some kind of two-pane application view like with filezilla or cuteFTP; it isn't as integrated into the desktop as what you get when using native SMB file sharing. So, is there Windows software you can install that can make the file sharing experience very non-expert friendly with some protocol like ssh/sftp or NFS?

Ubuntu :: Web Script For Apache As A Simple File Sharing Server?

May 23, 2010

Quite often I need someone to transfer a file to my laptop, and it's often different OS to different OS, and setting file-sharing, sshd/ssh, ftpd/ftp, and whatever else not is often not worth it. A USB key is also not always handy or big enough.

But, it's easy to be on the same network, just hard to get service working on top of it in less than 3 minutes if you've never dealt with that person's computer before.

What I was thinking would be the simplest thing would be if I could run apache, and have a very simple web script that simply allows file uploads. Something that would serve a web page that has a "choose file" button which brings up the file dialog, pretty standard I guess. I wouldn't say no to a few more functions on top of that.

Given that, does anyone know of a simple apache modules, or a web server script (language doesn't matter) that would allow for this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Terminal Server Over Internet (RDP?) & File Sharing

Dec 16, 2010

my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

To make things easier to read refer to the above as "question 1" and the velow as "question2" Thank you. And sorry for the inconvience. These topics I felt were to similar to make separate topics.I also have another question, the files I have on my server can be accessed by anyone on the network(added a second HDD and network shared it) how can I make it so that the LAN clients have to "login" (or it uses their computers login info to send them to only their files? And if that is possible can we expand it to allow me to use those logins through the internet?

Server :: Setup House Mostly (for The First Time) For Backups And File Sharing?

Jan 28, 2011

**Edit: path for mount was incorrect Distro Server: CentOS 5.5

Clients:
Fedora(latest)
OSX(latest)

Backround I am attempting to setup a server in my house mostly(for the first time) for backups and file sharing. It is important to me that file permissions are preserved. So its my understanding that I must use idmapd in order for this to work. As of now I'm only working with the linux distros while osx will be dealt with once these two work together. portmapper is up and running, along with lockd on both machines. Firewalls are also down on both machines for now. The server side was all setup using the GUI interface with no extra options selected. Problem When attempting to "mount -t nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" I get an error operation not permitted with no error printing in /var/log/message. If I use "mount -t -o nolock nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" it mounts just fine. Ive checked both machines multiple times to make sure that lockd is up and running. In the idmapd.conf file I the domain as "localdomain" for both machines but I doubt that is right; like I stated above this is my first attempt at a server. I'm assuming the problem is a whole missing step that involves some kind of id mapping server I need to setup.

Server :: Read And Write File Sharing From Debian 5.04 To Palm Webos 1.4.5

Oct 12, 2010

I currently have a debian hpc server unit of 10 p4 computers running under debian lenny in use for serving my home network via pxe. I was wondering if there was anything I could use to allow the same read and write acces that is on my pxe machines on my new palm pre plus. That would save me the hassle of syncing all my documents and movies etc to my phone every day or so.

So basically what I am asking is if I can use the current 5tb nfs raid and mount it some way to a remote ip that I can access fully on my phone without the need for a flash plugin. Btw the phone is homebrew app ready.

Networking :: Server Connection To Outside World?

Sep 17, 2010

Got a few servers runnning and they all connect fine to the net. Each are running with a static IP provided by my ISP. But I have one server were I re-installed Debian Lenny - or tried to. At the stage were it wants to connect to a mirror it cannot due to network problems. I tried a new install leaving it behind a router. This solved the problem and it connected. Tried once more directly connected to a static IP and same problem happened - it got to the point with the mirror. Tried changing the settings after the installation through the router. This is what I get from ifconfig :

[Code]...

If I ping it from one of my other servers it shows as OK and can also ping my other servers from the server in question, but if I ping google.com it times out (fails). The IP 92.62.196.77 is in the range that I can use. Checked that with my ISP. Just to make sure I tried disconnecting one of the servers that I have working and changed the server in question settings and still it came out with the same problem.

OpenSUSE Network :: Access To NX Server From Anywhere In World

Jan 5, 2010

I have run into a problem using FreeNX in combination with public key authentication. I have Googled myself silly, but I can't find the exact answer to my problem. I am hoping that someone here will know the answer. First, let me tell you what I am trying to accomplish:

- I don't want my ssh server exposed to the Internet with password logins enabled. I only want public key authentication.
- I want to have access to NX server from anywhere in the world.
- I want NX to use a custom keypair, not the default supplied by FreeNX.

My environment:
openSUSE 11.2 (client and server)
KDE 4.3.4 (client and server)
FreeNX-0.7.2-26.5.i586 (server)
openssh-5.2p1-9.1.i586 (client and server)
NX Client for Linux 3.4.0-5 from NoMachine (client)
qtNX Client qtnx-0.0.1SVNr281-215.1.i586 (client)

The login problem persists, whether I am connected to the same network or to another network. Since ssh logins work, I don't think a firewall is the culprit. What do I have working so far: - The ssh server on the remote host only accepts public key authentication and I can login from the client without problems. So far so good. - FreeNX is installed on the remote host, using a custom keypair.
Authentication with this key works. I can login from the client with the nx user and the public key.

Server :: Apache 1.3.33 Deny Outside World - Allow Network Only?

I can't seem to set this older server right to deny outside access while I build a website on it. I have googled for hours and everything I have tried just denies me as well. Seems to be all or nothing.

My last attempt was:
Code:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName www.mydomain.com
ServerAlias mydomain.com
ServerAdmin me@mydomain.com
DocumentRoot /home/me/www/site
ErrorDocument 403 /temp.htm

<Directory />

AllowOverride None
Order Deny,Allow
Allow from 192.168.0.*
Deny from all
</Directory>

Server :: SFTP - Folders Become World Writable?

Jan 21, 2011

Pair.com offers only one SFTP account on regular shared server and to set up mutltiple SFTP accounts, Pair.com moved me to a virtual server (VQS1), which I believe is not a shared server solution, but Pair representatives were able to create multiple SFTP accounts on this VQS server.

However, when I asked the representative to restrict access of this additional SFTP accounts to a sub-folder, I got the following warning email: confirm you understand this will make your entire web directory world-writeable. This will increase the chances of a security attack. If you do understand this, you can go ahead and execute the command yourself. The command below will accomplish both commands in one.

Fedora Security :: Server Seems To Attack The World Hacking?

Apr 10, 2009

I went away from home for a few days, ... Now I am back at home and noticed, that my server is going out with 100% available bandwidth. The server is mainly Http / Ftp / Mail server, so I stopped all services, to see which one it is. ervices stopped, still 100Mbps go out like ants in the flood.

I updated the system, made a backup, installed IPtraf. It seems that I have something 'installed' and my server is running something to attack User computers. It seems to try to find something on random IP's random ports. I am a little bit confused now. As long as my sites are running, I'm ~OK~ but sooner or later I would like to have my bandwidth back. How could I try to hunt down which service/app/process got hacked?

It seems that the monetary system of our society got now more enemy's than friends. Capitalism seems to reach it's end. But my server is serving also ART! Sooner or later we will need to pay copyright even for our thoughts. I was reading today, that the French president wants to punish file sharing as his wife made 3 albums, and wants to get some money ..
